12 FROM EUROPE. Henri Rochefort Glv/es ECU Impression* of America* Its Reporters* Its iflor mons, Its Womens And Its Men* Correspondence Wjric Voift TVbrW. Paris, Feb. IL— HcntyHochefort has just pub lished ft book on bifr escape from Noumea and his voyage home. It ia/more particularly about tho voyage, and he gives an account in It of every place he saw orjouched at on his Journey from Sydney to London.«, It is called •* From Noumea to Burope/f.'and)it is interesting as a record of a gifted Frenchman’s first—and prob ably last—glimpse of the world beyond the boulevards. I pass, over bis descriptions of other countries to como to what he says of the one in which you will jbaturafiy feel most In terest,—tho United .States. He is at San Fran . cisco, and as soon , as he lands the re porters are on his track. But he is deter mined not to be interviewed, and for a time be manages successfully to evade them. Several intruders, however, find their way into his hotel, and among them is a gentleman who travels with Genova watches, and who succeeds in penetrating -to the very room occupied by KocbeXort and Olivier Pain. They tell him they do not want any watches, and be goes away. 1c Is only a ruse.. The next day the very same In dividual accosts them In the street and an? nounccs him&tlf os a reporter. They were leav ing that evening bv the Pacihcßailroad, ana the reporter very Civilly made bis apologies for not being able to* accompany them all the way to New York. :‘Hc_ insisted, however, on giving them some hours of his company. He was true to bis word, and iitook bis place in the car alons with them, and as soon as the train bad stance, asked the tariffed Rochefort to contribute an anicie to hll paper. There was no denying him; Rochefort bad to comply, the reporter watch ing him all the while us though for fear his very thoughts escape, and stopping at every station tp send a dispatch to bis Journal. Rochefort gives a no doubt somewhat fanciful specimed'of these dispatches. *• Having asked Rochefort for a r6sume of the actual condition of his own country, ho has consented to write a special letter on this * subject.” *• Rochefort re flects; hd is missing his hand across bis brow: he is writing a Jtew lines with feverish haste.” 4i Ho has set to work again; sometimes be lilts his eyes to Heaven, sometimes ho lets them fail,” and so on. 'This was Kocbofort’s first experi ence not only of American reporters, but of American railway traveling. “ The. stoppages are very short," be says, “ though, sulficiently frequent. • Passengers not accustomed to Amer ican want of lorerhougbtrunsoroe risk of being left behind, ns the train starts without any warntog.whatever. You see women and young girls ciimbimr up nimbly into, tho cars already in motion without affecting any of those thou sund-aud-ouc terrors which would ha sure to af ford European women ns many opportunities of aborting themselves off.” * - The traveler could not fall to stop at Salt Lake, either as a Frenchman or as a student of manners. He was rather favorably impressed with it. "It is permitted.to suppose,” be says, “ that there Is at the root of Mormonism a ques tion which is serious and worthy of attention. French people, of course, would not cousider.lt so; for with our nation, where ignorance nour ishes, tho Mormons are mcro funny people created and sent into tho world simply to afford subjects for pieces to the authors of tho Palais ■ Royal. Brigham Young is an old libertine and nothing more. Vet this country, once more naked and more barren than the sands of the seashore, bus been made one of the most im portant centrcsof commerce, industry, and agri culture in the New World by the incredible in telligence and the miraculous activity of the Prophet.” Rochefort, by way of informing himself of the other side of the question, saw Mrs. Stcnhouso—author of the well-known book •against Brigham and bis system—os well as her whom she has induced to withdraw w■; from the Mormon -Church. Mr. Stcabouse . characterized tho Mormon worship as a series of juggleries, but Rochefort thought it was a little lute in the dny for him to have made the discovery, after having belonged to it so long with apparent fervor. He . went to tho great temple, and was agreeably surprised by the devout attitude of the worship ers. Here there occurs n touch supremely French.. Rochefort evidently expected Unit some special notice would be taken of him, ow ing to tho celebrity of bis name and the no toriety of bis escape. To his surprise, tho Mor mon women never once looked up from their books of devotion. “ The' .women* did not ap ' pear to interrupt their meditations, and they never once accorded us the favor of a single glance/' Ho was, however, treated with moro consideration at Salt Lake City, and especially by the General commanding the United States troops, who ordered a review in his honor. Rochefort, though, as be modestly says, ho knows nothirurof the military art beyond what he learned in appearing before a council or war as a prisoner, could not help admiring the precision of the moneuvres. In compli menting the General, who made a becoming re ply, he ventured to ask him why tho Govern ment of the United States had chosen such a place lor such a force. “Oh, it is on accpunt of the Indians,’* said the General, after some hesi tation. “If it is not on account of Brigham Young,” I replied. Before leaving he went topay his respects to Mrs. Stptibouse. “She received us sitting in a dreamy attitude, and with her hair lulling loose on her shoulders in the style com mon to all the portraits of celebrated blue stockings. At tho very first glance one per ceived what part ought to be attributed to her In tho apostasy of her husband. She took up a brilUantb-bound cony of her book on the Mor mons, and writing a dedication In my honor on tho title-page, she presented it to me. AH this I was done with the air of a Coriuua. . . Once more In tho cars, we bad tho good luck to find ourselves in tho midst of a circle of Amer ican women, each more distingue, more amiable and more lively than tho other. It is impossible to have at once more correct and more delight ful manners. The tact of these shopkeepers* wives might shame our ambassadresses. Their charming brusquerie, their frank glances, their womanly pluck contrast deliciously with the ridiculous squeamishness of tho English women and tho pretentious archness of most of my own compatriots of their sei.” His judgment of the men was not always so favorable. A iilllc further ou he was accosted by a cadaverous-looking being, who reminded him of portraits of Paganini. “It is tho shade of Napoleon IIL,” said one of bis compaoious. Presently the spectre precipitated himself on Rochefort, and with his two bony hands seized his bead and commenced to fumble all over if. “I am a phrenologist,! must stuay his cranium.” M Then having conscientiously felt my head all over he sat down in a corner, took out u pencil, and passed three hours in noting down his ob servations on the bumps which be had just ex plored.” At lejictb they arrived atCtilcago. but* before they separate from their amiable com panions there is a peculiar ceremony to be gone through. “Tho American ladies came and sat down one after the other between two escaped fugitives, and lost no time in taking from their traveling-bugs small albums whose white pages struck us with a sudden terror. It was necessa ry, as you will have guessed, to blacken these pages by means of autographs, which at was impossible to us to refuse, and In supportable to us to write. This punish ment was particularly cruel os we were expected to compose sentences having some ref erence to our position, and to invent a new one to every album. Yet this, after all. was only a prelude, for in New York we Were destined to be the prey to many more-solicitations and to many more albums/’ Tho opening of his chapter on - Chicago Is characteristic: “Chicago, so cele brated for its commerce, is still more celebrated lor its fires. When this iutlammutory city has , remained for two years without being burned to tho ground the architects and builders organize . meetings of protestation.” He went the rounds of tho sights, and of course did not miss the pi tr aining- machines which exercise such an extraor dinary fascination over the spirits of most European travelers. How awful It would be, he thinks, if a too curious traveler were to be drawn in one day instead of a pig, and to come out at the othor end as ham or something to spread on bread and butter, before the eves of his astonished family. “ Chicago is a creation of tho railways, as San Francisco is a creation ' of the discovery of gold. The bustle at the sta tion is infernal. . . . Our hotel in Chicago, the largest in the world, affects proportions which give It a certain look of a sham cathedral. Tho food is superior, and the French wines seemed to me iolinitly more sincere than those ' X used to drink in my native country.” At Niagara, if he must tell the plain truth, the first view of the cataract was rather disappointing. They put up at tho Clifton House, where, of . course, another album was offered to them, in which they were to record their impressions of the scene. One of them took the pen and wrote: “This fall is profound; mine is still moro so. (Signed; The Shade of Napoleon III.” Niagara loads to some reference to the exploit of Blon dm. “ which raised hira In a moment from the postion of a small performer at one of tho thea tres at New Yore to the Pantheon of clowning. . . . The want of order and arrangement which distinguishes New York both astonishes and amuses. The streets are in the possession of small dealers: enormous signs float in tue wind; stumbling-blocks incumber the pavements: the shop windows arc an - image of chaos. The confectionery shops for ladies arc as numerous as the liquor shops for men. American girls have a passion for sweet stuff.. They only leave one bonbon shop to go and sit; down in another.
