mocks Opened with n good deal of slrupgtli,
and for a little while the market gave promise
ofnu advance. Hut tho bad news from Wash
ington, If It did not cause, was at luast tnado tho
occasion of a strong Bolling movement, and for
tho rest of tho day tho market wont steadily
downward. Tho market closed weak.
Wabash was soft. Its activity showed that It
was being freely sold. Oould, according to
street report, was selling both Wabash and
Western Union. Keene, too, is on top of tho
latter and Is pounding tho market now
scheme for a postal tclegropb.
Northern Pacino was again one of the con
spicuously weak stocks. Tho preferred sold
down to 7l)ft, closing nt 74*4. No reason Is given
for this downward movement. Tho syndicate
who have the control of this property have tho
money In hand with which to complete It, and
its business Is growing. Tho results already ob
tained from tho Northern Pacific Unllroad nro
not generally known. During tho past year
about 800 miles of now road have boon finished,
nml It Is expected that, by tho close of 1881, the
Company will havo 1.400 miles of completed
itind. Tho earnings, as reported on 731 miles of
main linos, oro nearly sutliolont to pay tho In
terest on tho cost of 1,000 miles.
The land sales last year wore over $3,000,000, of
which about SOOO,OOO wore for cash, and this year
they will bo larger.
On tho Pend d'Orcltlo Division, Just completed
a mortgage was niado Inst year for $4,300,000
White tho road has boon in process of building
tho sales of land have amounted to a little over
$733,(XX). and Iho road has applied $883,000 to tho
principal of tho mortgage debt. Thus, before
this division ot tho road has boon operated,
Hourly ouc-slxth of tho cost has been paid from

Illinois Central Directors at their recent meet*
ing declared a dividend of 5U4 per cent on tbo
slock. Its duly earnings show an increase of
(60,QU0 over the corresponding month of last
year. It will lose about 714 per cent of Its busi
ness by (ho shortage In wheat, but on the other
bund the prospects nru fora corn crop greater
than any yet raised, and tho Southern business
Is Increasing. Short sales wore made in Chicago
yesterday at UK.
The bulls and tbo bears are both soiling. Care
ful watchers of tbo market In New Vork express
tho opinion that the downward movement has
reached n point where it Is nt least ijsdangerous
to sell ns to buy. Tbo shorts have oversold the
market In some directions, and Ilnsscll Page
was reported to bo talking bullish, and to'bo
predicting that stocks would go up fi per cent
suddenly some fine day.
Trunk lino and standard dividend payors stood
tho strain well yesterday, and the principal
giving away was in tho fancies. Mobile & Ohio
sold down At, and Denver & Itlo Grande was
pressed for sale from UX)?4 to l»6's, with
an .insignificant rally to 06 J*. Wocrlsbooifer
wassaid to bo trying to unload. As n mutter of
fact he Is known to have sold nt tun points
above present quotations, mid tho reports that
lie Is now unloading are evidence that ho Is try
lug to depress tho prices so ns lo buy back.
Manhattan reached (ho lowest It has yet
touched.
There was a little buying of Investment stock
for cash, lint tho general feeling among cash
buyers Is that stocks arc stilltooblgh. Tno In
dications of tho market worn that had it not
been for the bud news about President Garfield
(boro would have been more liberal buying for
investment, it Is tho general opinion that tho
lluctunllons In tho President's condition oavo
been ihoro trying to tbo market than bis death
would have been.
Union raclilc was noticeably weak, after it
wan quoted, ex. rights to subscribe to the Ore*
gon extension.
The Qnanelal Blinntlou, the New York Tribune
. says, is free from symptoms oC trouble. Money
'has poured Intn the country In such volumethat
idront §I!I0,OOi),000 has been added to tho ciroula*
tlon within the post year, and yet tbo declining
rate of exchange eoniirma the Judgment of
shrewd bankers that Imports of speoio are like*
ly to be resumed quite early this year. The
banks have on band a surplus reserve'much
larger than they require, and are not
anxious to Increase It, because they
know that over tW,000,000 will be
oolleetnbln from the Treasury, for culled
bonds and interest, before four weeks have
passed. Money Is easy on cull, though slllfor
rates prevail on time, aud probably will until
(ho demands of tho fall trullio have been clearly
provided for. Dut the fact that no Hurry In tho
