Col. Bentom’s History. GEN. ANDREW JACKSON. He was a careful funner, overlooking: every thing himself, seeing that the fields and fences were in good order, the stock well attended, and the slaves comfortably provided for. 11 is house was the scut of hospitality, the resort ol friends and acquaintances, and of all strangers visiting the State—and the more agreeable to all from the pcrjjpt conformity of Mrs. Jack son’s disposition to his own. But lie needed some excitement, beyond that which a farming life could afford, and found it for some years in the animating sports of the turf, lie loved fine horses—racers of speed and bottom—owii txi several, and contested the four mile heats With the best that could be brought to the State, and for large sums. That is the near est to gaming that I ever knew him to come to. Cards and cock-pit have been imputed to him, bat most erroneously. 1 never saw him enga ged in either. Duels were usual at that time, and he had his share of them, with their un pleasant concomitants ; but they passed away with all their animosities, and he has often been seen seulously pressing the advancement of those with whom he hud lately been arrayed in dead hostility, ilis temper was placable as well irascible, and his reconciliations were cordial und sincere. Of that, my own cuse vvu-. a signal instance. There was a deep seated vein of pi ty in him, unaffectedly showing it in his reverence for Divine worship, respect lor 4he ministers of the (Jospel, their ren piion in his house, and constant encouragement of all the pious leniencies of Mrs. Jackson. And when they afterwards became members of th< church, it was tin* natural and early ns ills ol their early feedings. lie was gentle in the house, and alive to the teuderest cnmt.o is, and of this 1 can give mi instum-c, greatly in con trast with his supposed diameter, and worth mom than a long discourse, in showing what that character really was. I arrived at his liouic one wet chilly evening in February, and came upon him in the twilight, sitting alone before the lire, a lamb and a child between his knees. He started a little, called a servant to re move the two innocents to uuotlier room, and explained how it was. The child had cried be cause the lamb was out in the cold, and beg ged him to bring il in, which he had done to please the child—-hi* udopUslson, then not two years old. The ferocious mail does not do that, and, al though Jackson had Idsp,t--.ionsand violences, they were for imcu and enemies—for those who were against him—-uud not for women und children, or the weak and helpless, for all ol whom his feelings were those ol protection mid support. Hi* hospitality was active us well us cordial, embracing the worthy in every walk of life, and seeking out worthy objects to re ceive it, no matter liovv obscure. Of this 1 learned a characteristic instance in relation to the sou of the famous Daniel Boone. The young man had come to Nashville on his fath er's business, to be detaiic d some weeks, mid hud his lodgings at u small tavern in 1 in- low er part of the town. (Jen. Jackson heard ol it, sought him out, found him, and took him home to remain as long as his business detain ed him. snyiug: “ our lather's dog should not stay in a tav ern where I have a house.'’ This was heart! and 1 heard it from the young man himself, long after, when he was u Htate Senator of the (Jcitcrul Assembly of Mis souri, and as sueli nominated me for the ( nit ed States Senate at my first election in IH!» •—his name was Benton Boone, mid so named alter my father. Abhorrence of debt, public and private, di-lilo* of bonks, and i<>• of luird money, love of ju.-liee, and love of country, were ruling p.ostmis with Jack.on; and ol these he gave constant evidences in all the sit uations ol his life. Of plicate debts, he con tracted none of his own, und made any sacri fices to get out of those incurred for others.— Of this, lie gave a signal instance not long be fore the war of 1*12; selling the improved part of his estate, with the best of buildings in the country upon it, to pay a debt incurred in a mercantile adventure to assist a young rela- ■ tive, and going into log houses in the forest to begin a new home and farm, lie was attach-, cd to Ills friends and to his country, and never! believed any report to the di-credit of either, until compelled by proofs, lie would not In lievu in tins lirst reports of ihe surrender o| (Jen. Hall, and became ,-ad when lorecd to be lieve it. He never gave up u friend in a doubtful cu e, or from policy and calculation. He was a linn la-liver in the goodness ol a su perintending Providence, in the cvcntlitl right, judgment and justice of the people. | have seen him at the most d* -penile part of his for tunes, und never saw him waver in the belief that ail would come right in the end, In the time of Cromwell he would have been a Puritan. The character of Ins unud \,us that ol judg ment, with rapid mid almost intuitive percep. j lion, followed by iiistunt and decisive action, ]l was that which made him a (leiieral mid a President lor the times in which he served, lie had vigorous thought, but without a lucidly nf arranging them in regular composition, either' Written or spoken; and in formal papers iisn-i ally gave his umnscript to un aid or Iriend, or twercUiy, to be written over—often to the loss of vigor. But the thought* were Inn own, vigorously expressed, mid without ellbrt, writ ing with a rapid is-n, and timer blotting or al tering ; tint, as Carlyle says of Cromwell, hit ting the nail on the head as he weut. 1 have a great deal of his writing now ; some on pub lie ulliiir#,covering several sheet# ol paper, und no erasiou* or inierlinealious anywhere. Iliscon flusious were rapid uud immovable, when he was und*r strong eouvielions, though often yielding in minor ponds to lbs friends. And 110 limn yielded quicker when he was convinc ed, perfectly illustrating the dilJeivuoe between firmness und obstinacy, Of all the Presidents wb<» have done mo the honor to listen to my opinions, them was no one to whom I spoke with more confidence, when I lull myself to be in the right, lie had a load to carry all Ids life, resulting from a temper which refused compromises and bargains, and weut lor u clean victory, or a clean defeat, in every <a*e, lienee every step he took was a contest, and it nmv lie added every contest was a victory, 1 have already mild In was elected u Major Heueriil In Ten nessee,-uu election on which so fundi nf. forward* depended by one vote, Ilis ap pointment in the United Htntes regular urnlv w«4 a conquest from the Administration, which had twice refused to appoint him as a Urign dier, and once disbanded him n« a volunteer (Jeneral, and yielded to Ids militia victories, ill# election a< President was a victory over politicians ns was every leading even! of hU Administration, Ilm ai.o, «lhim* /!, A wrlntM m-Ulmt oecurrwl 01i flu- 11, W, R. 14« y» *!• I'duy, n low mili'i won! of I situ tun, Tb 9 C*n*vr» thrown down mi i tiilmiikiiK iii, Uic uutfgttgn wild two |iu»*'nuor our* "•VfiTld ckm imwttun* klilnd, nod ngvoml ttikern Iwlly wuumM, DAILY PIONEER. A Railroad Hcrmou. | This is a fust age. All persons, topics, things, are becoming permeated with the uni- versally prevalent“ two-forty," steam-whizzing, chain-lightning, spirit. It has been at work among urtizxus, business-men, lawyers, doctor#' politicians, these many years, producing splen did result*. But recently, however, has it , rushed into our pulpits For the past two or three centuries, theology has been explained, enforced, and elucidated by rule ; the same h opes, figures, similes, illustration#, have been used over and over again by its teachers, “without variableness or shadow of turning," to such an extent, that any one, picking up si volume of sermons printed a hundred years Imek, might gather therefrom lint only the cream and substance of the next Sunday's discourse, but, nine times out of ten, the very style and inuu ner of it, ulso. These things are in process ol change. llkmiy Wvito Bfkciikii, 10. 11. ('matin. Dr. Dkvvkv, and others, who unite de votion with life, grace with spirit, und godli ness with an appreciation of the wants of men in the present, are. by their example, improv ing vustly upon the old method of enforcing Divine truth. The Apostles did not go back to Adam's time, or Noah's, or Solomon's, or Jeremiah's,for the purpose offinding fuels to aid them in bringing home the tmthsof the(Jospel to the hearts and understandings of their hear ers. They appealed directly to the men of their lime, to flair prejudices and their predi lections, and found in their condition, in the influence# surrounding them, in the institutions under which they lived, in their superstitions, and in the general tendencies of their minds, materials which, wrought skillfully into their discourses, gave them, in a great degree, their i almost miraculous power. These ideas were sugge ted by hearing a ser • * n riion on Railways and their Influences, preach ed last Sunday morning by an eloquent div ine of this city, who was doubtless moved thereto by the prevailing excitement attending the re ception of the railroad exeur.-ionists, during Hie past week. After presenting Ins subject I in a mod happy, interesting manner, und ad. voeuting the social, political, and religious benefits of these great national highways, lie closed his effort, with remarks to this effect: ••Tin* W mill is one gient Station lion .; wltrr<Mi I nf every sue mid <bgi«»-. iiwitil (In* carm to cun \ i |i<>m l<» <i far diMinit conntiy —‘Mint hotline fimn u lienee an I traveler icloiii*.' .My liomls, many <>l von are Ink •trrl iliirrt I'm lull ; hut file Loan J » m/n Cm am j. .fill al the ajfi r, oilerrug to yoar tickets tm yon. Attention is directed to the advertisement of Mr. Illinobwortii watchmaker, comer of Fifth and Jackson streets. We were surprised and interested yesterday, in examining his stock, among which were several articles of his own manufacture. The idea of getting a watch, of the best lever and chronometer styles, manu factured entirely in a city not yet six years old, and on the frontier of civilization, would stag ger any man unacquainted with the free and comprehensive spirit of enterprise pervading every branch of mechanics and business in our marvellous city. Yet it is a fact. Mr. 1., who followed the business of watchmaking in Eng land, brought his machinery along with him to St. Paul, and has* succeeded in turning out some dozen watches, which, as time-keep ers, are proving themselves fully equal to the best quality of those imported. Manufacturing establishments of all kinds are multiplying among us ; and within a year every thing, from a steam-engine of the largest 1 lower, to llio most diminutive lady’s watch, can Ik* furnished by the enterprising nrtizaiis of ,Saint Paul. Yesterday, news was brought to this city that Cnpt. llknry Brown, of tho Canal Boat Flying Cloud, had had nn affray with some Irishmen at Ottawa, which resulted in the shooting of seven of the men. It is supposed that three were mortally wounded.— The occurrence happened, we learn, in the following manner: Capt. The captain was Isdow nt the time, and when he came on deck asked who kicked the dog into tho water.— I'pon Is iug pointed out the man, he observed that for 4wo rents lie would serve him as lt« (the man) Imd the dog. At this the Irishman took two rents fram his poekrt anil dared the Captain to put his threat into execution. The Cupliiiii then knocked the Irish* man doan, it is said three different times, and was on the point of throwing him into the Canal, when the bystanders interfered and separated them. The Captain soon lifter started for Chicago with his Inuil.
