All day yesterday the excitement continued, and .'quads of men gathered here and there on the corner, and all along the principal streets, appeared to be in anxious consultation and alarm. In th.e afternoon ii wii3 reported that the t Iri.-lt of Baltic Koiv were forming into a l bewlv. arming " ith j’isftils. boxvie knives, and I ii’iing tlieir iioii-,-_ with - It m s ami other mis- i sites, and their general attacks upon Ameri cans xvere contemplated in different parts oi the cily. These tht-iisaud and one rumors w ere the oc casion of the deepest anxiety among all our e.ti/oiis, ami Jod to the most efficient prepara tions. made by the city officials, for the pur pose of quelling the very first indications of the autiripakd riot. All the militaiy were ordered to be in readiness at the lirst alarm. A large fore.* of policemen were detailed. - Diva) crowds ci,Hectod on the streets witere disturbance.- xvere likely to begin. But we a e happy to state that thus far in the night (ii o’clock | no extraordinary or dan gerous done nst rat ions have been made on ei ther side. At tliis hour xve anticipate no further riot or bloodshed, though the very combustibleuatun ol the public mind would seem to promise nothing else but another on!break. Our city ha* never before witnessed sueli disgraceful scenes as have within a day or two past so greatly disturbed her peace, and xve of fer Lie earnest Wi.-u that the like may never occur again. F. S. — AyoTfiEit Attack \xr> sum. xrom; Ib.ooii.-iiK!>.— Since writing tin* above, the jiortion ot our city at ami near the intersec tion of Sixth ami Liven streets has been the scene of a continuance of the riot with the most fatal effect. From what we can learn, the renewal of hostilities was occasioned bv a squad of !:i tie. trilling, vagrant boys, xvho col lecting together on the corner oi' Eouriii ami fireon streets, rais-sl a loud outcry and started tip the street, throw ing a shower of rocks at i the houses supposed L> contain the Irish, as they pa.-sed by. The cry drew a largo num ber ol people after the boys, and when the throng arrived at .Sixth street, they were fhvd into from the x\ imiows of a small frame shan ty standing on the northeast corner of Sixth | and Liven. Tiie military company known as the Conti nentals. were sir-1 upon the spot to prevent further disturbance, and they, too, received the lire of the inmates of the houses, xvhicli was returned, but we learn without auv effect upon the Irish. Finally the shooting was .-lopped, and some dozen or more arrests were made by the poliee.- The lvsuil is as follows :—Of the Continen tals we h-nm that Joint Holliday received a u.were flesh wound in the thigh just above the knee, from a pistol bull, and also that John Prison was badly shot in the leg and arm, but it was thought no bones wore bro ken. It xvas reported to us that Lieut. Spore was xvoumled in the arm. and also that ('apt. Blackburn was in some way injured. Oi the others, we saw lying in a drug store on the corner of Sixth and Morgan stm-i-. Thomas Ferguson, who was shot in the arm and both legs : A. L. Tice, a f a;:idryman of j the Missouri Foundry on Main street, xvho, received about twenty buckshot in his legs, arms, and in liis body—he xvas badly hurt : also. Hamilton Mashette, xvho xvas wounded in his right leg, both above and below his knee, by pistol halls; also Thomas Hide xvho received shots in both logs and in the arm. Lying in the same place with these men. was a man supposed to be an Irishman, who xvas shot dead, through the heart. Ibis latter took place at the corner of Mor gan and Sixth. The man xvas standing in the crowd wlicii a pistol report rung out upon the night, and lie xvas oKserxed to leap about ten cot in the air an 1 tall d *ad upon the spot. B lien xve left the scene of disturbance, the military appeared to be ocetipving the street xvith good cilcct. although the murmurs of the crowd xvere loud and deep. Our citizens of the American party appear to be excited to the utmost, and the whole city is readv for the most violent outbreak. The police and mili-. tary seem to have but little control over the! multitudes. Mohk of the Mob.—We concluded our ac count of this great tumult at 12 o'clock night before last, when order was apparently restor-' j ed. citizens were seeking their homes and tin* wounded all properly cared lor, but xve had chronicled but half of the terrors of the night. About one o clock, a large crowd had gather < d near the intersection of Biddle and "Ninth ' - streets, and were proceeding to mob some Irish houses in that vicinity, when they were again lin'd upon from the windows and doors of the besieged dwellings. In the melee, one of our xvidciv known and most respected citizens, Ed xvin K. Yiolctt. partner in an extensive iron 1 store, on Main street, received three slug-shots surough his body, which caused his instant death. We learn that at the time lie was shot he wa- engaged in arresting nil Irishman named I imnthy Lvdon, who had been one of the lead ing spirits ot the riot, and xvho, xvhen caught hold ot by Mr. Violett, discharged his pistol! immediately against his breast, causing his in stant death, as above stated. At about the same hour, John Fah-y, Lieu tenant of the night police, a d a man by file name cl Snyder, a coffee-house keeper in the sixth V, aid. were shot at the corner of Broad way and Ashley streets. Snyder xvas killed instantly, and Faley, it is thought, cannot re cover, a ball having passed through his bodv near the lungs. Several other persons were badly hurt at that point. Aft or t is renewal of the night's disasters, as the news spread along the streets that still fur-, ther blood had been shed, and that some of our best citizens had been killed, the excite ment cointn ‘need raging again, and a large j crowd oj personnel dice ted along Fourth street, ai.d started xvith great shouting and confusion ' tor the sc. ue of bloodshed. Inc sp.clatvj of tax* infuriated masses mov-j tag tax .lily along, tiring pistols in the a.r, and j xeouitg tiie lmulest oaths and exclamations on 1 tne lrisii, waile ti.e lire-bclis of the city were j i rnig.ng and shouts xvere lieunl Irom ail jiait.-, i ol tne coy, was a most exciting uinl terriivingj o:ia quite enough to alarm every one, that i i tne reign ol terror in our city was b.,t just'' reaching its height, and that but one drop of i blood l ad been spilled where there were thou sands <1- nianded by the excited masses. A company of about fixe hundred men, da ring tiie after part of the night, formed them selves in order, and being armed xx ith muskets xvhicli they had procured, marched up street to tliv St. Louis University, where they ex pected an encounter would take place, previ- ous reports of the college being filled with am-- munition, arms, and belligeicnt Irish having J filled the ears of the whole city. But happily' no opposing forces were met of any kind, and the company disbanded. Toward daylight the quiet was general all over the city. As morning came again, re-j ports of the death of Mr. Violett and others sii-med to occasion the deepest sensation.—; Large crowds collected around the police office and calaboose*, and up and down several of the principal streets, whose sole topics of conver sation xvere the outrages of the previous night and the means to be taken to secure sal'etj and peace to the city. About 11 o'clock a proclamation from Mayor llow was posted all over the city, calling the people to tiie Court Hhu.-t* at 12 o'clock. M.. for th.e purpose of consulting about the best measure's to bo taken to quell the mob and re store order. The meeting was a very large one not withstanding a heavy rain xvas falling at the time. Speeches were made by Mr. Ken nett. May r llow. Mr. Lucas and •)udge Bates, all of which xvere enthusiastically received by the crowd. The speech of the Mayor was well-timed and of a proper spirit. He commenced by repel ling with indignation the charges of inactivity made against him throughout .tin* city. No exertions on his part, he said, had been spared (as xvas the truth) so help him Lod. He ap- I pealed to the citizens to assist him in vindica ting the outraged majesty of the laws, and paid a xve!! merited compliment to the military companies, and especially to (’apt. Blackburn, xvho had ] rompt’y s ‘condetl all his efforts. Mr. KomicU’s remarks xvere in good season. - as also those of Judge Bates, and other.*,. And xvlic-n the Mayor, in compliance xvith tiie resolution, announced that the municipal for. e of the city xvas. cr should be. suspended for the present, he xvas loudly greeted. A call was then made that ail good citizens who are anxious for the return of laxv and or der to the city, should proceed at once to the ( ii\ JI«ilI and enroll their names as special policemen to guard and watch the city : after which the meeting adjourned. She met , with thiMlefendunt some time ago in Franklin. ! where lie attended a store, and the juirties be ; iug mutually jfieased with each oilier, an at-, i taehmeut sprung up between them. Shortly i alter xhis meeting, the young lady and her sis i ter xvere sent to a Seminary in Licking county. | Ohio, to finish their education. Sutlilie ful lowed them thither, and by promising the girl that lr* would marry her immediately, and rep-j resenting to tlie proprietor of the institution that lie had been deputed by };.*r father to lake! the lady to the Fast, for tiie benefit of her * health, he induced the foolish girl to leave tin*; establishment ami accompany him to this city. ; From the treatment which she received at his : hands on the road, ami tiie strange manner in i xvhicli lie conducted himself here, it became ovid. nt to 1 lie lady that his intentions were not horn-ruble, so she resolved to tear her. eUTVom him. and for this purpose applied to Mr. Uiiev. proprietor <ff the hotel at which they xvere j stopping, for his protection. This gentleman i at nin e interfered, and had him arrested. The Mayor, after hearing the ease, desired the pris oner to leave the city in six hours, or he should send him up as a vagrant, but taking* no notice | of the order, he was again arrested, and in de fault ofi?2,oUo bail, xvas committed as above i stated. 'I he prisoner is a dashing looking young man, ami maintains that his hi eutions'towards the girl were purely honorable. He exhibits! letteis from various firms in Bhiludelphia, and ■ declares tliat his arrest is an unjustifiable act. and one xviiich he xvill not tail to resent when he regains his liberty. The young lady is still at Mr. lliley's : she xvill be sent back to tin* | Seminary to-day. a xviser, if not a better girl, than xv lien she left it.— (t.jzettc J»l, } 19/4. at. ijatti aau*tß.
