Friday, Vcloer nn, Ivw. ELKS TO SELL FANCY CATTLE Members of the Lodge Donate Much Blooded Stock Which Will Be Auctioned at the Fair. PAGEANT MONDAY EVE Gaily Decorated and Illuminated Pa rade Through Streets of City Will Open the Elks' Fair During Con. gress Week. iuL uIv-y r xllunug wuugreaa Its 1lt- J ing its exhibits exclusively to grains, grasses and vegetables grown upon dry land, but in spite of this fact fancy cattle raised in the Yellowstone valley, are going to be on exhibition during the week of the congress, and will, at the end of the week, be auc tioned off to the highest bidders. The exhibition of choice live stock will be under the auspices of the Elks, a number of the members of the lodge who are also ranch owners and breed ers of fine cattle having offered sev eral thousand dollars' worth of the best stock in Montana to the lodge for the purpose of adding interest as well as a generous amount of coin to the fair. The fair is being held for the purpose of starting a fund which will be used in furnishing the new Elks' home, now nearing completion, and the money (resulting from the auction of the fine cattle, will all be turned into the fund. J. Collins West, head of the lodge, says that he has received a number of gifts of cattle, thorough bred sheep and stock of all kinds as well as numerous valuable articles and that all -this will be auctioned on Saturday, which 'will be the last day of the fair. The several committees of the Elks' fair are working overtime these days in their efforts to get everything 'ready for the opening of the fair on Monday evening. The opening of the fair will be marked by a grand illuminated pageant, announcement of which was made some time ago, 'and in which all the secret organizations of the city have been invited to take part. Mer chants of the city have also accepted invitations to have their houses rep resented in the parade by floats and about 15 firms are preparing their floats. The lodge will have a gaily decorated and illuminated float, drawn by the two teams of the brew ery; the Second Regiment band will take an important place in the line of march, decorated automobiles and carriages will be in the parade and the members of the lodge, part of them in masquerade and clown cos tumes and the older and more digni fied half in the regulation Elks' uni form, will head the procession. The pageant 'will start at 7 o'clock Monday and will pass through the principal business streets of the city, terminating at the Coliseum where the fair will be held. At the Coliseum work will be begun this morning and within a few days the large room will be transformed by the erection of about 40 booths and a lavish use of the lodge colors in decoration. Plans for the interior decorations have been prepared by Link & Haire, and local Elks say that there will be something doing in every one of those 40 booths every minute that the fair is open to the public. During the fair a brand new Buick auto will be given away, and a voting contest will be carried on whidh will award to the most popular young lady a handsome diamond ring. Numerous other contests will be made features of each day of the fair and the event promises to add a truly carnival touch to the more formal gathering of the delegates to the Dry Farming cong ress, and will doubtless attract many other visitors to Billings during con gress week. +- CITY SEWAGE MUST BE TAKEN CARE OF State Board of Health Issues Order Pertaining to Disposal of Bill. Ings Sewer Waters. From Wednesday's Daily. The anticipated order from the state board of health in regard to the dis posal of the sewage of Billings has arrived, the mayor yesterday receiv ing an order from the board declaring that the method at present in use in this city is illegal, and giving the city two years in which to install a means of purifying the sewage before it en ters the river. The same order was issued to Miles City some time ago and after being taken to the courts Miles City has lost its case and is now preparing to comply with the requirements of the state board of health. It is understood that the Billings city council will make no effort to fight the installation of the purifica tion plant which will cost in the neigh borhood of $30,000 and which will thoroughly clean all sewage waters of impurities before they are emptied in to the river. 4. . EDUCATED CROW DIES IN JAIL Alexander Upshaw, High in Councils of Crow Nation, Found Dead Yes terday Morning. GRADUATE OF CARLISLE Death Due to Pneumonia Contracted I on Prolonged Spree-Was Well Known in This City as Interpreter for Chief Plenty Coos. From Wednesday's Daily. Lying cold in the icy grasp of death and with the blood Despatiered walls t and iloor of h;i cell Lt;.ir' the story of an unexpected hemorrhage, Alexan der Upshaw, perhaps the best edu cated Indian of the Crow nation, was I found in the city jail yesterday morn- 4 ing. Upshaw was arrested late Mon day night at the request of Dr. Miller who had answered a call sent in by a I Billings hotel where the Indian was stopping and who declared that the man was suffering from a protracted spree and that the only way to keep 1 him from further drinking would be 4 1 to lock him up. The body is now in 1 charge of Coroner Smith who has pre- 4 pared it for burial and who will send it to Pryor this morning where the funeral services will be performed. Upshaw was a graduate of Carlisle Indian school and was one of the best, if not the best, educated Crow on the reservation. He was the son of a subsehief of the tribe, was the fav orite of Chief Plenty Coos for whom he often acted in the capacity of in s terpreter, and was a familiar figure on the streets of Billings for he often came to this city with other Indians who had business in the discharge of which they found use for the abilities of Upshaw. The fact that the man had been drinking heavily and had evi dently obtained liquor in or near this city has led to an investigation by both city and county authorities and it is hoped that the party who is guilty of selling liquor to Upshaw can be ap prehended. Upshaw was a comparatively young man, being 37 years old, and made his home at Pryor. He is survived by a wife, a white woman who formerly taught school at Pryor and whoseI marriage to the young graduate of Carlisle caused quite a sensation. -4 ANOTHER TOWN MUST CHANGE ITS NAME Postofflce Objects to Name of Hedges, a Rapidly Growing Town North west of Billings. The effects of the recent ruling of the post office department against names which are confusing or which border on the ridiculous are begining to be felt in eastern Montana. After striving to have the name of Bercail, by which the territory is best known, given its newest town on the line of 1 the Billings & Northern, and being re fused by the department, the local townsite company is now in receipt of a communication from Washington stating that the department cannot see its way clear to name its post office at Hedges after the town in which it is situated. The department bases its objections to the name of Hedges on the ground that the name is too similar to Hodges, a postoffice in the western part of the state. The postoffice at Hedges, which e is the name given the place by the railroad surveyors, is called Yale, and while the department is willing to change the name it is not willing to adopt Hedges. Hedg&s is already beginning to put on the appearances of a lively little city and the matter of getting its name settled once and for all time must be attended to at once. The townsite company will offer some sug gestions to the department at once in order that the confusion which now r arises over the fact that the town and the postoffice bear different names, may be overcome. ALLEGED WIFE BEATER. From Wednesday's Daily. "Scrap Iron Bill" is the name by which an alleged wife beater who re sides in the western portion of the city is entered on the police blotter. Officer Schneider made the arrest n yesterday afternoon, it being alleged that he of the euphonious cognomen did yesterday afternoon beat, abuse and maltreat his wife, much to the an noyance of the lady herself and sun dry and divers neighbors. Bill will be g iven a preliminary hearing this ; morning. i Seven Are Granted ` Paroles From Pen 11 Albert Wesley Sentenced from This A City for Manslaughter, Is Given Freedom.
