There is more than a suspieion that the secretary of the Treasury will et in a ruling on the lead ques tion at a time when it may be expected to do the most good. It has been im possible to get from the deparment a ruling such as the united West de mands, but motives that have their soure in polities may prevail at length. Mr. Toole takes the field to-day, starting his tour at Lewistown. Iie will make the round of east-side counties first, reaching this vicinity when the campaign is at its warmest. There is no better campaign speaker in Montana than Mr. Toole. Men who oppose him in politics admire his ex eellent personal traits and the cause will be strengthened by his active pres ense in the field. In its edition of yesterday, our es teemed neighbor down the street goes for the wicked corporations in great form. It will be well for these soulless combinations to go very slow for a time and we warn them that the eye of the republican press of Anaconda is on them. By the way, the MTAxNIAn eught yesterday to have mentioned the presene of its local contemporary in the dalily field. The Rrlerir is out every afternoon in good shape and ex pects to keep company with the rest of u till the campaign closes. WITH MANY THANKS. The first duty of this newspaper is to make its acknowledgements to the business men of Anaconda for the gen erous patronage withm which they favor it. Five days ago a canvass of the city was made and favors in advertising were solicited. Every merchant in Ana conda. save one, gave a favorable a. swer and. in every instance, the re spamse was cordial and generous. Yesterday's edition of the nTAnIARDI) feli little short of presenting the aver age proportion of advertisements found in old and prosperous newspapers. There could be no more practical evi dence thauu this of the favor with which the rTANDARDI is received in its own home. In its effort to mnake the in vestment of money of greatest .usi ble value, the NrTAxnARIh devotes par ticular attention to the taste and style in which business announcements are displayed. In addition to this. it guar antees a circulation from month to mouth at least twice as large as that of any other newspaper In the territory, and it is ready to back this sasertion in a manner that must satisfy the most exacting. Newspapers cannot live by circula tion alone; indeed, their financial strength is best tested by the relative value of advertising patronage. At any rate. a city of the siae of Ana conda that cheerfully puts into type the amount of money represented by the advertisements in these columns deserves a good newspaper -and Ana couda is going to get it. REGARDING REGISTRATION. Republican newspapers are persistent in their efforts to put democrats in a false light before the people on the question of registration. The history of this business is that a registry law was before the legisla ture of IN17. It was fair in its pro visions, ample in its safeguards and just toward the voter. IRepublicans in the house introduced the measure, but demonuratic votes were needed to pass it. These were readily obtained. John It. Toole, of this county. voted for it, so did Mr. IBrown, of Heaverhead, and otlwrs. The measure was introduced simply as a bit of political strategy to put democrats on record. Its passage was more than the promoters of the bill bargained for. The bill went to the council, and tlwre it was killed by a re publican from Jefferson county. Last winter, the republicans, in full control of the legislature, passed the registration law under the provisions of which the pending election is to he conducted. Its unfairness is finding demonstration every day. It is putting many voters to unusual and unneces sary tests. It is compelling them to make long and expensive journeys. At Pioneer, in this county, for instance, nearly fifty men are obliged to travel forty miles to register. In the lBlack Pine district, with not less than a hundred and fifty men, the registry ottlce is fifteen miles away. In the El liston district more than two hundred men find themselves forced to travel from fourteen to sixteen miles in order to get their names on the list. In other counties the distances are even greater, and in one instance, by actual count, forty-two voters are a hnndred and five miles from the ottice of registry. The provisions of the law relating to the identification of papers or the pro duction and proof of the same are even more cumbersome than those regarding the locality of the registry omices. There's many a citizen, as worthy to vote as any man living in the territory and as fully entitled to do it, who will be barred this year under the operation of this ill-framed law. Ikemocrats do not oplse registra tion. Their votes in the legislature, two years ago. made an excellent law Inssible. IBut they oplrme tile unjust cwheme placed in operationl by republi canls and they so declare inl their plat form, which also pledges the party to give support to a plan for registration which will be just in its operations, which all democrats can approve and which no fair-minded republican will oppose. AS TO THE SHERIFF. When it comes to choosing between the rival candidates for the otlice of sheriff of Deer Lodge county, you could do it in the dark and hit it right. It will be diffticult for the republican managers in this county to excuse themselves to the voters for having nominated Sheriff Moore for a second term. These gentlemen must know that, within a few months, a grand Jury found itself forced to pass on MW Moor's adminstraton criticisms severe that they ought to put him for. If any atiatry defense to tbhse charges w ever made. people n this metiea of the country have not heard of It. If. ln a peeral way and utidkle of the I.stances just recited, Mr. Meeoore is a good man for her'f, thne people of IJer Lode are not aware of the fact. The woer is that a party whih wants to win shoula try to tr on the public a candidate whose record In his first tern is his worst recosmenda tion. Men ought not to toe aresussly caosen for so important an ol0ee as that of sheriff. Its duties are exacting and often serious. The eandidate named in the democratie convention is a gentle man regarding whose ability there is no question with those who know him; and the county knows him well. Mr. Quigley, when a resident of Nevada, served a under-sheriff. and the record he there made is altogether to his resdit. lie was nominated with hearti ness, he is an excellent man for the place, and the nTANDAoDu puts it downa as one of the safe predictions that he will be easily a winner. Anacosda demnormat are evkklntly pleased with the county ticket which i mow eomplete. They propose to roll it hibh on the first of Otober. Russell B. Harrisons Is comnlg. We suppose, therefore, tat the battle miay he gin right off. It Is no aannounced that Governor White will stump the state. it was fair and Juast a the paat o. the coastitutionsal onvention to oeder the election of county tlckets throughout Man tna.. The r.putblcan prems eshasted its enemies in criticism of the action, very early in the canvass. We bear little tram themn now and we shall hbear less as the campaign advances. The tact is that the proposition to start in with a new equip snent throughout, when Montana beeomes a state. commnends itself to all the people. We suspect that the democrats of Mon tana are not the liar ther are claimed to he hby the Hrinsa Journal. It voters i. Montana do not get register e~t, the newspalpers will not he to blame for it.
