The valuable valise belonging to Rev.
Father Bohn, wheih was lost from the

ago, was found in a cabin, but of the con
tents 800 was gone. Five Chinamen are
under arrest as acessories, the main thief
having made his meeape.
Censr Supervisor Jenkins and Chief
Clerk Bear of Washington estimate that
in the 19 counties west of the Cascad
sumnnit, comprising the Puget Sound dis
t-Ict, the June enumeration will ·eow a
population o 29 165; that oeutern Weah
Ington will show about 12O,000, makina a
total of 36,2B inhabitants in the state of
SrWashington. r
The oficial boiler inspector at Pierre
South Dakota, found the bleached skele
ton of a man in the mammoth boiler at
the gas-works. The boiler has been in
.on0stant use since January 1, and the Ad
identity of the man and how he came
there is a mystery that nobody seems able
to solve. The flesh was all boiled from
the bone. Boots, shreds of clothing arnd
a few coins were also found in the boiler. C
The Union Pacific asks Vancouver,
Wash.. to raise iO0OO0 boonus, rant the
right of way through the city, and secure Ca
fifteen acres of land for depot grounds
and terminal facilities. In return the
managers promise that an air line road
from Vancouver to the sound will be com
pleted by December 1, 1891, and a bridge
across Columbia river at Vancouver May
1, 1893. work to begin within one month
after the acceptance of the propostiot. j.
An interesting sight was witnessed on
Tuesday last, occasioned by the removal J
from the east to the west side of the river
of a lodge of Chippewa Indians on their
way to Half Moon. The nomads were
thoroughly equipped for the march, a
feature of the scene being a troop of pat
tient and well trained dogs, each packed
gale fashion, with fifty or more pounds k
(j camp goods appertaining to the tribe.- -

The Washington Standard of Olympia
says: Several years ago Mr. G. A. Barnes,
of this city was compelled to pay an al
leged shortage in the accounts of Joseph
('usintnanl. receiver of public moneys a
quarter of a century back. It was after
wardt ascertained that the accounts
balanced, and that the apparent deficit
was an error of the department. The
house committee after a delay of several
years has reported favorably on a senate
bill refunding to Mr. Barnes the amount
wrongfully collected of him, and he will
doubtless soon receive his money.
A writer in the Fossil, Oregon, Journal
antly observes this is a country of mag
nifieent distances: C. A. Cogswell, living
at Lakeview, traveled 300 miles by stage
in order to attend the demooatie state
convention. He came through the cen
tral empire by the way of the Dalles. He
could not well cross the Cascades to Ash
land, on account of the snow. When a
man has to travel by stage 800 miles to
reach the metropolis it brings to mind
what a big undeveloped country this cen
tral empire is. In area western Oregon

Fergus county can boast of being the
banner sheep-raising county in the world,
says the Ary.s. She can point with the
finger of pride to horses, cattle and mines
galore. but when one comes to marrying
the startling fact becomes apparent that
nlot one priest nor parson throughout the
county is authorised to weld two seething I
hearts into one composite chunk. The
situation is indeed humiliating as well as
alarming when we conslder the number
of justices of the peace who are now send
ing in their resignations. The time may
come when Romeo and Juliet will hie
themselves across the border to seek a
full-ledged purson who can tie the Gee
dian knot.
The people of Shoshone. Idaho, are pre
paring for active work to build up their
town. A board of trde has been organ- C
i.ed, a number of strong committees ap
ointed, and a progrmme laid out for C
advancing public improvement and steps
taken towards securing capital for the
construction of large canal enterprises.
Among other enterprises suggested as be
ing desirable at Shoshone is a banin in
stitution, a lumber yard, planing mil and
fence factory, a harness and saddlery
shop, a creamery and cheese fator lor
supplying mning llcamps and the inter
mountain country, a feeding and slaugh
tering company for the purpose of fatten
ing sheep and swine on a large scale and
shipping the meat products to Montana
and Idaho pointsa wholesale nursery and
tree.growing enterprise.

stopped off at Beaver Canyon and while
there ran across the impersonation of
what is known in jolly cow boy vernacu
lar as a .dead tough man," says the Dil
Ion Tribe.". He had been arrested and
brought before a Beavrer Canyon justice
of the peace for some depredation. Not
liking so of tshe . aeast remarks of
the diminutive proseeuting attorney be
gave vent to his pent up feelings by
knocking the Blackstonian down. The
constable interfered but was bested in a
few rounds a Ia John L. Sullivan. Then
the grave justice. seeing that something
must he done, fined the men for contempt
of court. This was too much for even the
hold, bad man and we proceeded to mop
up the floor with the judge in a manner
not set down in the statutes. There was
