Well,one did go astray,^ he continued,^^and we had mighty hanl work to find^it. Adum Forepaugh had a habit of^letting out his surplus animals to smaller^shows, and when ho died his executors^hud a (pieer time tracing up his assets^and making good the delivery of animals^to the linn to which he sold the show.
Afterconsiderable trouble, all the ani^^mals wen* accounted for but one trick ele^^phant named Kmprcss, of whom the ex^^ecutors could get no trace. I n'ceived u^letter from them one day with a v|K*cial^commission to hunt up the missing ani^^mal.
Knipn-sswas worth $2,000 ut a low esti^^mate, and was really of much more value^to a show which understood well how to^use her and make use of her tricks. After^a careful sean li through .he contracts it^was ascertained that Kmpn'ss had been^let to a small show which start^! oti a^western lour. With this clew I traced the^show through tin* west and buck towunl^the east until it reached a -pot in the^wilds of West Virginia.
Thereit seemed suddenly to sink out^of sight, and I was at a loss to know^whether the animals wen' roaming over^the hills and mountains, mired in some of^the swampy valleys, or drowned in tin^Ohio river.
Investigationrevealed, however, that^the undulating country hud been list much^for the show. The horses had become ex^^hausted by climbing steep hills, fording^streams and dragging heavy wagons over^soft roads. The proprietor was unable to^keep up with his advertised dates and his^revenue Ig cut off the show busted.
Thenit was found by impiiry in the^sparse settlements that Kmprcss had liecn^driven lo the Ohio river and shipped up^stream to Pittsburg. The elephant con^^sumed about $10 worth of food daily, and^she was rapidly making her temporary^kee|ter poorer. But at Pittsburg he pulled^together all his resources and established^u low-priced entertainment at F.ast Lili-^erty, where the big Is-ast was made to do^gmsl service. There she was recently^found, gaunt and lean. She will soon be^turned over to Mr.Forcpatigh's successors,^who will see that her voracious appetite is^ap|M'used.
