But with all we^have aooonipliahed, and it amount* to a^good deal, we are ye^ only learner*. Much^of what ha* been dona, both a* regarda^money expended and labor performed,^ha* been parliamentary and experimen^^tal. Aa we ''are bean learner*, ro we are^learner* at ill and aueh we remain for a^long ante to come. We were at the outset^profoundly ignorant of tbi* business. We^had to learn ita very alphabet. If then,^much that ha* been done haa been done^badly, little wonder. If disappointmente^bare come and losses been sustained, we^should he judged lightly. Butthis is of the present^what of the^future^ -lust this: We are uow doing^our work tolerably well, but will do it^much better hereafter. Ourclaim-owners, impoverished and^weary with long holding on, are willing^1 ^ part with their holdings on reasonable^terms. T'ndeveloped and partially de^^veloped lumen can be bought cheaply-^very often at pricea far below their in^^trinsic values. It may not, and probably^will not always be thus. By and ny minea^will be bought not only to be worked, but^to be bald for a rise in tha market. When^that time shall coma there will be com^^petitive buyers. Themoat of us shall live to aee the gold^and silver mines of this state classed^among favorite inrestmenta. With some^far-seeing capitaliata they are so re^^garded at present The day of the ad^^venturer and the wildcat I* over. The^area of disappointment and loss has^about emled. Theroasters at the Wickes smelter have^bean fired up and there are indications^that work is to be resumed to tha full ca^^pacity of the smelter. WHATTO DO WITH IT TbeFire Brigade fill Have About^$2,100 io Cold Cash. A BLOWOUT PROPOSED ThePublic Library and the Orphans^May Coma in for a Share -ThaClty'a New^Property. Bt'tte,Dec. 4.^The Butte fire brigade^has at laat aold out, and it ia only waiting^now to get the M.lOu which the city voted^last night to pay for its apparatus and^I., .use The city attorney haa been look^^ing up tbe title to-day and a* soon aa this^i* found to be all right, a warrant will Is-^drawn for the money. Thenext question arises as to^what the brigade will do wltb its^I4,1UU. One of tbe member* aaid^i.. .la) that there la no intention of divid^^ing up the aum among the active mem^^bers, who are .10 in number. There are^still about two thousand dollars due on^the lot and house, and there are a few^other outstanding debts which will re^^duce the amount of clear money to alsuit^two thousand dollars. No action ha* yet^been taken aa to what will lie done with^the $i,00rt, but aix of the nine trustees are^said to be in favor of a plan of having a^grand blowout, to which will Is.- invited^tha firemen and their friend*. This could^be given for a small part of the total sum,^and in.. balance could Is* divided, one^half to be given for the benefit of the pute^lic library1, and the other half for the or^^phans. It is also intended to have printed^highly ornamental cards of honorahlu^discharge, to la* presented to each mem^^ber of the brigade who has served actively^five years or more. Asto what the city will do with it* purl^of the bargain is also still to lie^determined. It I* likely, however,^that the brigade bouse will be run luat aa^it ia. At the next meeting of the city^council Alderman Lynch will move tbe^appointment of a foreman and assistant^to remain constantly at the brigade house.^They will lie added to tbe paid depart^^ment of the city. It is also the intention^to have memtiers of the Butte City Fire^department, not under pay, sleep at the^brigade houae, and thus lie ready^for any call. Another plan^that has been proposed is to E.the hook and ladder truck in the^ade house. Measurements were made^ty and the houae was found to be^long enough for the truck with 10 feet to^spare. If the book and ladder truck is^placed there, the jumpers and carta of^tbe brigade will be distributed about the^city. It will only he a queatlon of time,^probably, when South Butte becomes a^part of the city and thru will want hose^carta. In fact it is likely that South Butte^will want a cart down there at once. The law^governing places employing women and^selling liquor is not limited to Sundays. Oneof the gentlemen who is kicking,^visited the sheriff at his office this after^^noon and wauled to know how be could^touch them as well as the Comique and^the Avalon. The sheriff sat down and^showed the gentleman the section of the^statute in which ll is made a misdemeanor^to sell, give away, or in any way dispose^of vinoua or spirituous liquors in any^idace where women are employed or al^^lowed to assemble. Younotice,^ said the sheriff, ^that this^is not merely a Sunday law. Thegentleman noticed and, lieing con^^vinced, went away sorrowful. It looka as^though they would have to pay their fine.
