Mr. Smith was put on the stand^first and asked a few unimportant ques^^tions in regard to how his clothes were^lying on the stand when he was robbed. AttorneyHuffy then moved for the dis^^missal of Mattie Wilson, one of tho de^^fendants, and quoted a number of author^^ities tending to show that the testimony^of an accomplice, or detective was not siif'^flcicnt to convict unless corroborated by^other evidence. Huffy then proceeded to^roast ex-Officer Griffiths unmercifully. He^called him an unblushing perjuror, and^said that he stood in with all the robberies^that had been committed on Galena^street. He said: ^There sits 'Sailor^Jack,' tho lowest and most degraded of^womankind, but I would rather stand in^her shoes to-day than those of Grifliths.^She is one of the most disfigured, de^^graded, dissipated and despised creatures^on earth, corrupt and impure, but when^^ he occupies a front seat in heaven Grif^^liths will Ire rustling rak^--olfs in hell. KmmaMorris, known as ^Sailor Jack.**^who had BesSJ subpoenaed w ith a view of^dispuoing Griffiths' testimony relative to^receiving money, was the llrst witness^called. I.i|.|i'll-^rott objected to the question and the court^sustained tho objection, stating that the^witness need not criminate herself ami^that t,nitidis was not on trial. Duffy then^moved to strike out that purl of OrnSttns^testimony relating lo the witness, but the^motion was overruled. The witness^stated thai on the evening on which^Smith wasnihls-d she had a conversation^w ith (iiilllths, at which tune hi* told her^that if she had any money to givi it lo^linn und not to giif t .unwell uii)thing.^She sai.l she did not know what he meant^iii telling her that. Thewitness was asked if Cantwell did^not drink MST instead of wine, but be^could not remember that nor how many^glasses he took into the room, lie said^that lu- supposed that the HJg which he^gave to GrtflfltllS was for a board for the^other woman.
