Etnericnrt*show* that tho drift miner^finds it practically impossible to secure a^title to such a group of claims until tho^mine is almost worked out, owing to thu^recent rulings ot tho commissioner of tho^land oflleo and tho woivtury of the interior^to the effect that ^the presumption that tho^Rold-bcuring channel extends under said^Dills, or that it contains gold ill appreci^^able quuntitic* w ill nut answer, and the^miner must show the actual existence of^the gold^^in other words, the existence^of the gold must Is) shown by actual de^^velopment in each one of the locations^^^ palan I^ Is lore the land olllee will ad^^mit it* mineral cliaractcr and prts*ccd to^Issue |uiteiit therefor. Tho drift miner is^thu* deterred from obtaining a patent un^^til hi* mine Is nearly worked out, having^Bo guarantee for title in the meantime. Congressis hereby respectfully re^^quested to so ulter the mining laws, at^least insofar as they affect drift mining,^that the drift miner may be utile to obtain^title expeditiously, bet the practice of^the land oflleo Is' so altered that patent^^nay issue to a group of consolidated and^contiguous claim* ii|*^n mineral laud, pro^^vided an actual discovery I* made ii|h^ii^any out* of them, since the present condi^^tions are such us to deter lulsir and capi^^tal from opening, developing or working^tin* important Held of the gold-mining In^^dustry. Naturally, capital lisMliri's a^^bowing of title. BUTTEMINES. MewMethod of Treating Ore-Good Show^^ing. -Mining Notes. IIittf.,Nov. at.^John Cooke of Silver-^ton, Col., is the inventor of a new process^for the treatment of silver ores, w Inch has^amused great interest among the silver^men in Butte, anil is being looked into^with considerable interest. The process^I* essentially a new one, although some^^thing very much like it lias been ill use in^some chemical laboratories in the past.Tho^Ophlr |M*oplo, who have been seriously con^^templating the erection of a mill tor some^time, are partii'iilurly interested in the^new process and Supt. Frank l.amson^will have it thoroughly ex|M-ritnented w ith^III order to determine whether or not it is^more profitable than the pit sent system.^The following description of Mr. Cook's^treatment is given by an exchange: Theore is first crushed and ground into^ponder us flue ns the Hour used 111 baking.^'The pow del c d ore Is placed in roasting^ovens and heated to a red heat, thus driv^^ing olTull substances that can la) vupori/.cd^by heat, and it comes from the oveus in^apparently the same form in v. Inch it went^in that is, pulvcriwd ore. Now come*^the interesting part of the process. In the^mill are found eight huge vats, arranged^in pairs. Those vats being upon a steep^Incline, the first pair sit, us it were, on a^step, the second pair on what might bo^called u second step, with the tops reach^^ing the Uittoms of the first pair, and so^on for the four pair-. Just above the flint^pair of vuts is found a luge hm of sail.^The llrst pair of vat* is tilled w ith hot^water and salt, making u hot brine to^which other chemical* are added, which^chemicals ait* unknown to anyone except^Mr. ( ^ok linns. It. In each of the second^pair of vats is found a pair of canvas ls^t-^toms arranged with u space between^them. Onthe upper canvas bottom the roasted^ore mentioned ubove is thrown ami tho^clieiuieully prepared hriuo is run in front^the vat* above, when the chemical* used^In the solution break up ate combination^in tho ore in such a way us to allow all^clement of the suit to unite with the sil^^ver, which compound being readily solu^^ble, runs off ill solution to the next pair^of vuts below . These. 1 hi1 third pair of^vat*, are supplied with large plates of^rop|ier, weighing ^.'si pounds each. This^cop|MT has un affinity, for the silver com-^|M^und. w hieh it immediately attract* to^its surface. The sib er. w inch has a w hite^B|p]h ar un e.cun readily Ik- si en collecting^on the copjtcr. When all the silver has^Ijcru collected from the solution, the .'..p-^per plates are removed ami the silver^M'ra|M-d from their surface. Near the^third puir of vats is found a press where^tin* silver eom|Htuud is pressed into bricks.^Outside of the mill is a m at brick build^^ing, resembling an nssay oflice, w here the^bricks are refined and the proeoM is com^^pleted, doing back to the vats, tiie soln-^tiou froin the ll.iril pan. after all the sil^^ver has been attructcd out by the copper^plutcs, is run into a fourth puirof vats^atid from there pumped back into the^flr-t pair to be u~ed aga n, thus allowing^of no wavte. Thensaayer* for the different companies^are now making . x]^-i intents w ith the^new process in the hope of discovering^some iuipnivemeu* on it. us it is only in^this way that new niethisls of trc-.trig ore^un* found. The ipiestion of tin* chemicals^teed by Mr. t isike in preparing the brine^to break up the combination in tie* ore is^the most iui|Miiiari one. If cither nitric^or sulphuric at ..1 is used, it soettta to Is-^the general opinion that thu new process I*no improvement on the old, but thi*^may not be the case. Superintcnde-itHall of the Alice mu*t^have in some way gained possession of theloft hind foot of a rabbit killed in the^northeast corner of a deserted graveyard,^in tho dark of the moon, or some other^lucky token, for the propcrt lee which are^under hi* efficient management are en- 1oyinga run of exceptional good fortune^ust now. The recent actpnsitioa of tho^ioeton w ns certainly a master stroke on^Mr. Hall'* part. It i* panning out beyond^all expectation*, and is now tho richest^^liver mine in the camp, with the |^o**tbla^exception of tho Ophir. Tho crosscut^reached the lead a few day* ago, and^drifting on it is now in progress*. The ore^has been gradually grow ing richer ever^since the vein was struck. The Alice is^keeping up well, und about 100 tons of^ore, running from *J6 to 7.^i ounces, are^taken out of the old stand-by every duy.^Tho big null has all it can do to keep the^bins clear, anil the Alice properties all^bear an unmistakable air of prosperity. Anew company ha* Ju^t secured a lease^and bond on the Ella claim, adjoining tho^Trovoiiiu, and is now putting in a fiO-horso^power boiler and ot her new machinery.^Operations w ill bo commenced ill earnest^about the last of the week and the shaft^will bo sunk an additional !r^ feet, it*^present depth Is'ing 110 feet. The I Ha^lias liecn worked rather extensively for a^small mini'm the past and ha* produced^some very fine ore. ThoKitty Norris closed down last^Wednesday after losing for Messrs. Olds^A- Co. considerable money. This property^ha* been in operation for about a year,^and lor a time produced some high grade^ore, but it proved to Is- in hum lies. (j.msbergcrand Fitzgerald yesterday^disposed of their one-sixth interest in the^Niagara to James W. Forbis for 114,0011.^Tho Forbl* brother* w ill proceed at once^to work this pro|^erty, which is developed^to the gaO-f^Mit level and gives every indi^^cation of becoming a big producer of rich^ore. TheNiagara is now the subject of a law - suit,it being claimed that r.M'J.OiK) worth^of ore has baM taken out of it through^the lllark BoCfe shaft. H.C. Carney ^V Co. have secured a lenso^on the Wapello, which is owned by the^finite A lloslon and located just west of^the Lexington, and everything is in readi^^ness to commence work at an early date. Fiiinegaiimid Ki-ing have taken a third^man into partnership with them and are^now at w ork on tho Florida, w hich has^Is-en a very rich producer ill tho |u.st, and^it promises to provo a bonanza to tho new^ow ners. ThoOphir I* running along at its ac^^customed gait with a force of alsiut ti^)^men. Some very fine ore is Iwing taken^out, und a sample running UN ounce*^occupies a conspicuous DOMtiOtl in Sujht-^intoiulcnt Ijinison's olflce. The distress^^ingly low pritI silver is felt strongly here, and u great deal of good ore is being^left in the sjmsss* Is-cause it w ill not pay to^take it out w nh silver at H, Thelease on the F.vcline, held by Kee^,^\\ ampler ^ Co.,will expire the last of this^month, after which the owners of this^property will work it themselves, A rich^strike was made here recently. Sinkingis in progress at the Kerry,^which is owned by the Carroll estate and^Itobert t.recr, and is being worked by the^latter. The shaft is down Oil feet and as^soon us th^^ lo i-foot level is reached cross-^cutting W ill be commenced. lllgNu-gets. Tholargest muss of gold ever found in^California was that dug out at t arson^Hill, Calaveras county, in lsst. It weighed^10a pounds. Farish and Harry^Wurncr took from the Monumental quarts^mine, Sierra county, a mas* of gold and^ipinrll weighing bit pounds. It was sold^to H. II. Woodwurd of San Francisco for^^Jt.sstii.TiJ. It was exhibited at WiMidvvard's^garden* lor some time, then was melted^down. It yielded gold to tho value of $17,- August14, MM, Ira A. It was found in^what is known as tho ^Boulder tiravcF'^claim, front which many smaller gold-^quarts nuggets have been taken at various^tunes. Outsideof California few nuggets of^note have Ikcii found ill any of the l'ucili*^coast state* und territories. The largest^nugget ever found ill Nevada was one^taken out of theOscela Placer mine about^a ^ years ago. It weighed -I pounds and^is supposed to have contained nearly^fd. 1 ^ ill gold.
