SweetCharity is queen of the fair,^and at the waving of her wand a mag^^ic fairy land has been bulldid In Kv-^ans' opera house, where goods, wares^and merchandise will be vended for^four days and nights of this week in^behalf of Ht. Ann's Hospital by some^of the most irresistible salesladies that^can be found In the land. Thehotiue Is transformed from its^ordinary business-like appearance to^a scene of beauty and gaiety. Mouths^of artistic design are decked In colors^most tastefully arrange.1, ami the dis^^play of fancy articles und those of s^practical order are attractive and^plentiful. Mrs.James Shields, as president of^the Ladles' association, und Mrs. J. k.^O'Brien, as secretary, have done much^to bring about the success of the un^^dertaking. Mrs. J. T. Qulgley is in^charge of the proceeds and will have^a goodly sum to hand to the sisters^when the end Is at hand. Hut that is^a long way ahead; the fair is only be^^gun. It was opened last evening In a^blaze of glory. The crowd came and^went from 7 o'clock till 10 o'clock, and^at all times the hall was filled. Asone entered the room the first^prominent stand to be noticed is the^postoftlce, an enclosure appropriately^decked with the national colors and^the star spangled banner. Here, on^application, accompanied by the neces^^sary stamps, Misses Alice McAndrews^and Helena Gleeson were handing out^letters to all comers, and some very^sweet messages were received. Justbeyond, but convenient to the^postofflce, Is tho cigar booth, a pretty^Chinese padoga, trimmed in red and^black. Miss May Peters, assisted by^Mrs. J. K. O'Hrlen, Mrs. W. Cochran^and Miss Mary Condon, preside at the^counter and, furnish fragrant Havanas^to smokers at fair prices. Fromthis it is hut a step to the land^of flowers, a booth that looks like the^prow of a phantom ship, In its white^draplngs of lace, though charmingly^realistic in its decorations of natural^flowers, with Miss Cornelia Surprenant,^as Flora, at the helm. Miss Helle Co-^burn and Miss Laura Durston are the^mates, and 'tis worth the price of^many a boutonnlere to have one pinned^on by the hands there, so fair. Here is af^^forded an opportunity to sit and rest^If wearied by the sight-seeing. But all^that's here is for sale^a sideboard, a^beautiful silver lamp, several easy^chairs, a sofa, a refrigerator, paint^^ings and etchings, a hand-painted vase^and a chocolate set, cushions and pil^^lows. The colors are plain black and^white, but there is nothing else plain^about the establishment. Those look^^ing for dainties and sweet things will^not pass it by without a purchase. Thosewho would pierce the veil that^hangs across the future are invited to^the gipsy's tent, a gorgeous camp^covered in the Kgyptlan colors. Miss^Zuile Zuba, the nom de plume of Miss^Nason. foretells the future by^palmstry, astrology, the cards and the^spirits.. .
