OgSost Griffith discovered^tile In Hie east end of the building^about I'M o'clock and turned In an^alarm from box 71, which was promptly^responded to hg the apparatus from^the central station. Officer Gillette had^passed around lh^' warehouse only a^few minutes hefore the lire was discove^^red and noticed * car with a big^gianl powder'' lag on It standing on^tie side adjoining the building. The car^was sealed and the officer naturally^supposed that II cut tino.l powder as^was indicated by the tag
Whinthe Bremen arrived Gillette^Informed them ot the supposed car of^powder and Chief Werner promptly^ordered the boys to ^get out.^ Dave^Magis-, the driver of the hose wagon,^had seen through the previous explo^^sion and he needed no second warning^He turned his horses around In a^twinkling and galloped back up to the^Montana Central tracks hi race horse^s|^eed. The hook and ladder followed^closejy behind, but only went up two^or thi.e blocks, as driver Thompson^did not have such I wholesome regard^for the force of giant powder as Ma-^Hoc.
Thereport that there was a car of^powder MOM to the trt spread all over^South Butte In considerably less than^a minute, and when people saw the^hose wagon and hook and ladder truck^galloping back up town aa fast as^the horses could go, they came to the^conclusion that It was time for them to^get out and they followed suit In short,^order. Men and women left their houses^hatless and some of them bootless, and^some with babies In their arms, and^seal I.-re.I north, east and west, as^though his satanlc majesty was In hot^pursuit of them. A great many of the^MM were hustled Into a couple of^street cars that happened to be passing^while the men ran along behind In^live minutes more than half the people^of South Butte were eight or ten^blinks away and those who were left^were gelling away as fast as they^could. Houses were left with doors^wide open and tho railroad suburb was^In a slate of panic.
Thesoiith-lioiind street cars were^stopped ai the Montana Central depot^by the police and everybody manifested^a ne^st urgent desire to get as far away^from the burning building as possible.^Chief Werner and Assistant Chief^Flannery acmalncd behind after order^^ing the tin-men out of danger to make^an Investigation. They found the car^Hint had caused all 01 the excitement^close up to the freight house, hut they^were unable al first to secure any defi^^nite information as to its contents.^Finally a ralln^ad man Informed them^thai ll contained merhandise and that^the |Miw.|er tag was an old one which^had not been taken off. They sent^after the apparatus and went to work^on the blaze More than 10 minutes had^been lost over the scare and the Inte^^rior of the long building was all^ablaze A second alarm was turned In^and the ijuartz street crew responded^with nnotherr hose cart. The firemen^then went to work In line style and^three streams were played on the fire^and II was extinguished III short order.^The llremen fought It back from the^west end of the building, and although^every foot was contested, they got It^well under control |n K. minutes and^had ll practically extinguished in half^an hour. While the interior of the^freight house suffered considerable^damage, the principal damage hv fire^was confined to the east end. wheer the^roof was burned off. All of the freight^stored In the building was either de^^stroyed or badly damaged by water^and smoke. The smoke will not be II^able for all the freight. hoe/gWer, aa^some of It had boon stored there long^^er than the time allowed.
GeneralPassenger Agent Calderhead^estimated the total loss to-night at^abuot H,M4X The building and con^^tents were taaejred for $L^0.ono. The gen^era! oftlivs were not damaged. The^origin of the blaze Is a mystery. It^started In the extreme eastern part of^the building and had a good start be^foie ll was discovered. Less than an^hour before some of the employes had^wet dow n the platform surrounding'the^building and there was no trgce of fire^at that time. There had not been a lo^coniotlvc past the building In two or^three hours, so that the tire could not^have started from a spark.

Butte,July 2.^The former wife of^William Tregear. who left her husband^last spring because he would not buy^her a bicycle, and who secured a di^^vorce from him last Saturday by eon-^sent, on the grounds of cruelty, kid^^naped her child this aftern.Kin. It was^agreed that the husband should have^the custody of the child and he t ^..k^him to live with him at the home of^his brother. Nicholas Tregear 111 Walk-^ervllle. The mother, who is now run^^ning a hoarding house on North Mon^^tana street, went up to ace the child^this afternoon and brought him home^with her. The ex-husliainl and father^was away at work at the time, and^Nicholas Trcgen.1- claims that she kid^^naped the youngster and fook blni by^force. The woman told Detective^Melklejohn this evening that th.. child^^referre*t to live with her. and that^Tregear would have to tight for him^in the courts if tie wanted him.

Butte,July 2^The police committee^at Its meeting to-night spent moat of^the time considering the ^had lands.''^The present administration has un^^doubtedly made a vast Improvement^In the appearance of these streets by^forcing the Inmates to beep their doors^and blinds closed and curtains down.^A petition was received from J. A. Na-^deaii. Frank Proulx, J. M. Bowes,^Prank Stephens, Edmund Levy. A. J.^Dahl and other properly owners In^Fast iSalena. Rast Mercury and Wy^^oming streets asking that this hardship^be no longer imposed and that they be^permitted to have the cui talns up. The^committee talked this over for some^lime and then concluded lo ask thu^council for further time.
Th.-rewas next a good deal of talk^regarding the moving of the prosti^^tutes off Wyoming; street. This has^I-en attempted by several former ad^^ministrations, hut It never seemed 10^stick. The gai mb^rs of the committee^expressed themselves very strongly In^favor of purifying Wyoming street,^and declai.-d mat they would carry^out the proposition, it was voted that^the mayor and city marshal should no^^tify the Wyoming street property own^^ers lo have the street cleared of all^undesirable candidates by September 1.^The mailer was also discussed of hav^^ing the street car tracks moved off of^Wyoming street so as to make a good^thoroughfare down to South Butte,,^one which would have no track on It.^Mayor Thompson said that he had^spoken to the superintendent of the^street car company about this. The^Company seemed reluctant to lose Its^Wyoming street franchise, but had^agreed to make the change provided^the Wyoming street property owners^would bear the expense of moving the^track to Arizona street, which would^cost about $1,000.
Apetition from property owners on^the east side of Main street, between^Broadway and Park, asking that the^street In front of the California brew^^ery be kept clear, was referred to the^city marshal with instructions to do^the best he could In the matter. There^was some talk about the stockade and^It was reported that it was nearlng:^completion.
