IdahoCity, Idaho, Aug. 4.^For the^past two weeks surveyors have been^work in the Klkhorn mining district^They are g^^\ ernmi nt surveyors mak^^ing the surveys for the purpose, of giv^^ing the state a chance to make Its ^r-^IscUons of limber lands. Many pros^^pectors and mine owners of that sec^^tion have made Inquiries of the sur^^veyors, but can get no satisfaction; but^then it should be rememl^ercd that they^can have no more Information than the^rest of us.
Abouttwo years ago F. V. Tinker,^stato land selector, made selections In^this county and the people knew no^^thing of it at the time, and when the^land was advertised no one knew whure^It was and cared less, thinking that It^would not be in the power of the state^to select lands In the mineral districts.^However, O. A. Duquette, who has a^patented farm two miles north of this^place, dropped .in to where the lauds^were situated and informed our peo^^ple, w'hen they protested against any^selections being made on thu mineral^lands, which includes the whole of^Boise Basin. The protest was sent to^the United States land office at Boise^City. The register says that he sent It^^to the general land office at Washing^^ton, but has not heard from It.
Ifthe state should succeed In get^^ting title to the lands those who have^mines would be In a clos^ place, and^prospecting would be suspended alto^^gether. There Is a ruling of the gen^^eral land office to the effeot that lands^situated within six miles of a mineral^location cannot be taken by the state^If proper steps are taken to Inform the^department In time.
Whythe state land commissioners^chose to make their surveys and selec^^tions along the best mineral belt we^have, Instead of getting their timber^lands where 1hcre^ arc no mines and^where none will likely ever he discov^^ered. Is the mystery. It should he re^^membered that there are hundreds of^square miles of the best timber in the^county not mi mineral lands as far as^Is now known. Just as accessible^In^fact, for the timber, would be far more^preferable. The. state land selector was^well acquainted In ithis county and^should 'have considered the Interests of^the mining fraternity. The secretary^of Sie board says that very little. If^any, lands will be selected In the town^^ships that are now being surveyed.
Fromthe quiet way in which maitters^have been curried on. and Information^that was received sometime ago that^the lands would be surveyed and se^^lected, It ts well Ihat the miners and^prospectors look Into the matter and^have a strong protest sent to the de,^liartment at Washington at once.
