8 ButteDepartment PLATINGTHE CARDS TheIncreased Tai on the Pasteboards CutsNo Ice at All. BUTTE'S POPULAR GAMES Faroand Solo Are tha Favorite^Down-Town Attractions, While^Lm hro and Whist Have Cap^^tured tha Society Ladles. Theincreased tax on playing car.ls^has had no effect In lessening the^amount of card playing In Butte. This^city probably does as much card play^^ing In proportion to population, as any^city In the country. All sorts ot^games have admirers here and there^cannot any one game be said to be^Butte's favorite. Inthe gambling houses faro is still^the favorite, while draw poker and^Stud-horse poker also are played every^night by those who think they are luck^^ier at poker than at faro. Atthe Silver Bow club whist and^solo are the favorites, although poker^Is occasionally played. At the Irish-^American club stud-horse poker is to^be seen oftener than any other game,^although frequently there Is a change^to forty-fives, whist and solo. In the^saloon back rooms about town solo^seems to have displaced all other^games, although whist or poker or^seven up or crlbbage can still be seen^onco in awhile. Occasionally ^est Is^added to the solo by playing for a cent^a chip Instead of for the drinks or ci^^gars. Insociety circles hlph five, which^reigned supreme last year, has been^utterly dethroned anl is replaced In^the favor of the ladies by progressive^euchre. Whist still meets with favor^among the more sedate, although it^has not equalled progressive euchre in^general popularity. A whist club of la^^dles will meet this afternoon for the^first time this seasor^jnd will continue^to meet weekly throughout the winter.^The club has 20 members. TheSweet Sixteen Whist club also^meets weekly, and has been running^about six weeks. It is the successor of^the Primrose Whist club, which played^during 3i! evenings last season. The^Sweet Sixteen club Is probably so^named from the fact that It has It^members, equally divided between la^^dies and gentlemen, which accounts for^the first adjective of the name. The^Sweet Sixteen club has adopted the^lollowlng rules and regulations to^govern the club during the present^season: Rulesand Regulations ofthe SweetSixteen Whist Club.^Season of 1895-1896.
