SHECAMPED ON HIS TRAIL A'Scornedand Deserted Woman, Fired by^Love Turned to Bitter Hate. Wreaks^Her Vengeance on an Adulterous^Husband and Her Paramour. GrtatFalls. Auk 4.^The. mill!! of^Justice grind slowly eoassltmse, Inn^they (rind just the same. Mrs. James^M. Simpson, well known In this, city.^aft^r a year of sleuUi-|ik^ trailing, has^secured the punishment of her recre^^ant and cowardly husband and his^dark-eyed and attractive paramour.^Miss Frankie DuHois. with whom he^eloped from (Jreat Falls something^over a year ago. For several months^past Mrs. Simpson s efforts to punish^^the adulterous couple huvc attract^^ed i he attention ot the people of Col^^orado and now she appear* to have^rounded them up and headed her hus^^band towards the penitentiary. Simpsonis a musician and fur sev^^eral years earned good money here by |^playing the piano in the Globe and 1^Park theatre halls. His w ife waa a j^hard-working, industrious woman who^rendered her husband material assis^^tance by keeping a I'oardlng house on^Fourth avenue noKh. The domestic^relations of the couple were apparent^^ly of tile most pleasant nature and^they lived happily until Simpson met j^and became enamored of the DuBols^woman, who was a recognised leader^of the demi-monde circle on Second^^treet south. He managed, however,^to conceal his Infatuation for the wo^^man until he Induced Ma wife to^close up her boarding houae and vlalt i^relative* in the Bast. While she was^absent Simpson took the furniture and^fitted up a sporting rrsort for Frankie I^DuHois. Mrs. Simpson returned home I^unexpectedly and learning how mat^^ters stood charged her husband with^dc^ ^ |.tion and Immoral conduct. He .^admitted his guilt, expressed great j^sorrow and deep remorse, and a re^^conciliation waa effected. They decld- i^ed to begin Hfe^ anew elsewhere and^with that cheerful end In view Simp^^son promised hli wife to accept a po- j^sit ion in Missoula, aw ay from tempt- j^a.Ion and where their troubles were^unknown He would go to the tiarden j^City, arrange a new home and his^wife was to Join him a week later.^Kverylhlng was serenely happy and :^the green-eyed monster was chaacd j^out of the family circle. He hade his !^wife an affectionate adieu and then^Uft Great Falls with Frankie Du Bots^as a companion. They went to Hel- i^ena and registered at a hotel as man^and w ife under an assumed name.^Two days later they continued their |^Journey to Idaho, where they were^located by a Standard reporter as liv^^ing quietly at a little hotel. When ad- j^vised of her husband's treachery Mrs.^Simpson was almost heartbroken and ,^. for neveral weeks w as seriously 111 .^at Columbus hopital. When conval- j^(^rent she was w Ithout means to^fellow and punish the couple. Friends '^aktlvtscd her to secure a divorce and^M pay no further attention to her un^^faithful spouse. This advice she re- 1^fused to entertain for a moment. With^energy and perseverance she earned^money by rolling notions and tie like^and w hen her accumulations were i^sufficient she located the fugitives and^started on the (rail of the couple. At^Leadvlllc sh ^ found them living as^husband and wife and secured their^arrest on a charge af adultery. After^a sensational trial the prisoners were^discharged and Mrs. Simpson left the^room almost crushed with defeat. Her j^love for Simpson had been transform^^ed into hatred and her ambition I^thenceforth was to make life weary I^for the runaways. She Interested the j^police In the case and finally had^Simpson arrested for non-support. He^was ordered by the court to pay her^sufficient money to properly support^her. He alleged that he was receiving^but $2 per day and she proved In^court that he was paid $4.50. The^^^^ft ordered him to pay over MS at^once and to continue to contribute^that amount each month in the fu^^ture or go to Jail. He paid the first^Installment and then Institute a suit^for divorce, alleging cruel and inhu-^man treatment. She answered the ^^milt, resisted the application and told^the sad story of her marital wrongs^to the Judge, who not only refused to^grant th^ divorce, but . ordered the '^plaintiff to pay his wife additional al^^imony. By this time life was becom^^ing a llv(d hell to both Simpson and^Frankie - They consulted a lawyer [^and; ha advised them they could live^together by occnpylng separate lied- ^^rooms They followed his advice and^secured adjoining rooms with a com-^municatiBg door. Meantime Mrs.^Slmpscn was still hot on the trail and^fwo weeks ago furnished a grand Jury^- snath evldeavse that resulted in their In^^dictment for the crime of adultery. The^case came up for trial In a district^court at Leadvllle a few days ago and^Simpson and the DuHois woman were^both found guilty. The crime in Colo^^rado 1s said to carry with it a severe^penalty and the guilty lovers are more^than likely headed for the iienlten-^tlary Referringto the case, the L-ail vllle^Herald-Democrat of Thursday says: 'The district court began grinding^on the criminal docket yesterday, and^by S o'clock In the evening had ground^out three verdict* of guilty. The prin^^cipal case was that of James Simpson^and Frankie DuBois. Jointly Indicted^for adultery'. This Is probably the first^conviction for an offense of this char^^acter ever secured In this county. In^fact. It is the first trial for this of^^fense that has ever occurred here, and^the result has rather daaed numerous^people who have Imagined that the^seventh commandment was purely a^dead letter and, in fact, somewhat of^an anachronism hf^-e. They have real^^ized the fact that, there is u la^v^^ calnst this sort of thing and that^lightning may strike anywhere. Simpson'scase ha* been discussed^in all Its moods and tenses. He came^here some time ago and was followed^by his wife, a woman who. uluo she^onie took to the trail, would SAT***^leave It. Months ago she announc-d^h^ r purpose of cinching Simpson. And^yesterday when the Jury came in and andSimpson occupied two rooms at^Nick Wall's place on Bast Third^street. Simpson claimed that the Du-^Bois woman was his housekeeper and^that he paid her m centi a day far^doing his cooking, and that they occu^^pied separate rooms. The ties that^bound them together were, he inti^^mated, purely platonlc, in spite of the^door that was between the two rooms.^The Jury, however, did not see the^| case In that light and found both the^, man and the woman guilty of adul^^tery. Mrs. Simpson, a tall, sharp-featur^^ed woman, with glittering eye and a^countenance expressive of a most de- Itrrmlned persistency, sat In the court^all day. she having secured the aid of^a special attorney to prosecute the |case with the district attorney. Sometime ago, a little bottle of^Chamberlain's Colic. Cholera and Diar^^rhoea Remedy fell into my hands. Just^I at a time when my two-year-old boy^I was terribly afflicted. Aug. 4.^A sad case of^destitution was developed at the M^ n-^j tana Central depot last evening and^I only by chance was It disc overed. Bev-^I eral months ago a hard working mi^^ni r. who for a year past has worked at^Belt, went to New Castle to a new po^^sition in the mines there, leaving his^I wife and three small children in I It^until he could earn money enough to^' send for them. Three weeks ago he ,^sent his wife $29 and requestid her to |^| Join him as soon as possible. The day j^! she received the money her eldest clilld^; I years of age. was taken ill and died a^; few days later. A week afterwards I^her second born was stricken with the^sam.- distase and died. The Brief,^strlcken mother burled hi r babes, us^^ing a portion of the money sent her to^travel for that purpose. The sickness^delayed her and she was obliged to pay^15 rent for the little shack she called^her home. This morning, with her one^remaining child, she came to tlreat^Falls, intending to take the train to^Helena On her arrival she purchased^a ticket for New Castle, which lift her^j with I'm cents In her pocket. All day^j long she sat In the Montana Central^1 depot without food to eat and fearing^I to spend her small supply of cash. The^' baby played about the Moor and sub^^sisted on a biscuit, while the mother^1 fasted. At 7 o'clock last night Officer^Luke Curry learned of her clrcum-^' stances and with Detective tlrillenlier-^ger took the mother and babe la a res^^taurant, where they were given a sub^^stantial meal. She was then furnished^with comfortable quarters in the worn-^! an's department at the city Jail and the^county officers notified. Deputy Audi^^tor Sam Moore and Commissioner 8.^^ N. Dickey went to the Jail. Commis-^, sloner Dlck.y knew the woman who Is ahard working, honest lady. GreatFalls, Aug. 4.^There was an^exciting scene on First avenue north^last evening which caused stroim Bsc n^to titter an exclamation of horror,^while women with blanched faces^shrieked in terror and turned from the^picture. Aboutj o'clock several cowboys were^driving a band of horses numbering^ah.,ut 200 down First avenue north^across the wagon bridge to the west^side. At Fourth street ih- band he-^came frightened and stain|^ede^l. and^amid a cloud of dust rushed on at a^reckless speed down the avenue. He-^tween Second and Third stnets two^little children by the name of Boone^were playing In the road. A boy 5^years old was drawing his little sister,^aged I years, in a baby cart. In th ir^sport both were crowing and laughing 1^unmindful that a black, distant, Im^^pending cbath was approaching. The^little girl picked up a handful of dust^and tossed it bi-th in the air and the^two laughed In childish glee. A mo^^ment later the wild herd dashed upon^them, and mid the thunder of nearly a^thousand .hoofs their voices were lost^while a cloud of dust hid them from^view. Probably 20 persons were within^range of vision at the time, but not one^was near enough to offer aid. The^horses dashed on and as the brecr.e^cleared away the cloud of dust the two^babic-i stood In the same position as^when last seen before the herd came^up. The horses had divided when they^reached the children and neither babe^had the hair on his or In ( head dis^^turbed.
