Wholesale and Retail Druggists The Largest Drug House in the State WHAT THEY DI1 IN'1899 Policemen and Firemen- Hgve Not Been Idle.. SUMMARY OFTHE REPORTS Total Number of..Arrests Was 2,795 and the City Recolved $18,250 In Fines-Loss By Fire Was Only $27,568. The chiefs of the police and fire de partments have prepared reports show ing .the WOrk pierformed by these de partments during 1899. Both are worthy of an analytical inspection. The report of what has been.accom plished by the police shows the mem bers of 'the force were not idle. During the year'there were 2,795 arrests or an average of a fraction less than eight a day for each.day in the .year. This might betaken to indicate that Butte is a very lawless city, but such an in ference- would not be entirely correct. The large number of arrests dbes not denote more lawlessness than might he expected to be found in any other city just like Butte, if there were another on earth. As a matter of fact, it is hut the natural result of the employment of large numbers of men, the large majority of whom are single, at good wages, for in any community where ::o many men earn the money that labor ers earn in Butte there is bound to be more drinking done than there would bain a community where money is less fee, and when men get drunk they are likely to commit petty of fenses and the vast majority of the arrests were for offenses of this char acter. Of the total number of arrests, 1,550 of them were of male persons and 1,187 wele females. This is another showing that would not be likely to be found in any other kind of a city of Butte's population. The large number of ar rests of females might be taken to in dicate a low state of public morals, but again this would not be exactly correct. That so many women figure in 'the police records may be attributed to the same conditions mentioned. A further item of interest in the re port is the amount of revenue the city derived from fines collected from per sons punished in the police court. The total amount of/ fines collected was $13,250, which shows that the legal de partment of the city government was not lax in seeking to punish offenses against the morals of the community. From It it will be seen that while the department was called out 147 times in response to alarms of fire, the amount of property destroyed was only $27,568, or consider ably less than half the loss entailed by one fire which occurred during the pre ceding year. Considering the value of the property that was involved in the fires that occurred, which was almost $2,000,000, the loss Butte sustained by fires during the year would seem to have been held as near the minimum as it could have been. RATES FOR HOMESEEKERS Representatives of the North Pacific Lines Meet to Arrange a Schedule. A Big Land Deal in Washlng ton-Railroad Talk. F. I. Whitney, general passenger and ticket agent of the Great Northern, has written a letter to Major J. E. Dawson regarding the criticism of the unreliable statistics in the company's publication, "Across America," espe cially as they relate to the population of Montana cities. Mr. Whitney says: "I am sorry that the population of your towns was not correctly stated. We based our estimates on the census of 1890, and evidently did not realize the extent to which Butte had grown. It does not lool;, certainly, as though there were 60,000 people there. How ever, it is inevitable in a book of this kind covering so much statistical mat ter that errors should creep in, and we are making a note of all points to which our attention Is directed and will see that they are remedied in the next edition, which will no doubt be published shortly."' A meeting of the representatives of the North Pacific transcontinental lines was held in St. Paul Thursday to consider the matter of bomeseekers' rates during the coming season. The subject was thoroughly discussed, and while it was generally conceded that perhaps these excursions had been a little too frequent during the past sea son, they had reports to show that a large portion of the travelers who ob tained these rates did so for the pur pose of locating in the West. These rates will be made to all points on the Northern Pacific and Great Northern on' the first and third Tuesdays of January, February, March and April, 1900, the rate announced being one fare plus $2 for the round trip. The big deal whereby the Weyerhau ser lumber syndicate secures control of 1,000,000 acres of Northern Pacific lands in the state of Washington has been settled, and it is understood final ar rangements have been made. About 1, 000,000 acres are included in the trans fer. Negotiations hung fire for some time, but the cause was largely tech nical and easily adjusted. The price paid is that of the original figures, $6, 500,000. New train equipment is being re ceived by the Northern Pacific with which its double daily train service between St. Paul and the Twin Cities will be equipped. It has not been def initely settled upon what date these trains will be started, but it is thought the first one will be sent out about April 1. With reduced time and fine equipment the Northern Pacific will be prepared to take care of the increas ing business even better than it did last year.-Pioneer Press. The official circular from the traffic department of the Northern Pacific has just been issued and confirms the ap pointment of Henry Blakely. for inany years secretary to Vice President Han naford. as division freight agent for the territory west of the Missouri river and east of Rathdrum and (oeur d'Alene City, Idaho, vice Robert Ran toul, resigned to accept service else where.
