RESCUED FROM RUIN.
▲ Wholesome Lesson fbr Girls to Take to Heart. Among the telegraphic dispatches in last Sunday's Chronicle was one with regard to two Oakland girls who were discovered by their horrified relatives officiating as pianis and waitress in a beer saloon in Eureka, 'ev. The friends of the girls are desirous to have it known how the young people were induced to leave their homes and embark in the saloon business by false representations. They were, it is alleged, led to believe that they were to be engaged in a concert hall of the same character as some in this cty which respectable people frequent. This highly select family resort of Eureka offered liberal inducements through an intelligence office which announced the fact in an advertise ment, of which the following is a copy : W ANTED—A YOUNG DAD Y TO PLAY piano ami sing for a country place of amusement; steady place; .150 a month, fare paid. Apply lip Geary street. The girls, on answering the advertisement, found that no fare would Le advanced them, but, nevertheless, consented to go to Eureka. S o convinced was one of them that the situation offered would prove an excellent one, she freely turned over a diamond ring to meet the expenses of the trip. They left on the löth inst., spent one nigh', on the cars and the next day reached the high-toned family resort of the Ease Range. Their employers generously offered to place separate bedrooms at the disposal of the ad venturous damsels, but they declined the favor and slept together that night. Next day at noon they arose, and after invigorating themselves by inhaling the fumes of the rail road furuace-t for a few hours, proceeded to business. The girl who was to play the piano was a graduate of the < 'akland high school. Her companion, who was to pass around the beer, has had the advantage of a collegiate education. Notwithstanding their advantages from an educational standpoint, they were unable to appreciate tlie ivsthetic pleasures of the hurdy-gurdy, and when the waitress found that the patrons of the establishment refused to take any change for their drinks si e be came suspicious. A council of war hastily held with the high school graduate, and the girls came to the conclusion that they were in an unpleasant predicament. A gentleman name Davis whose counsel they sought, ad vised them to leave the p ace at once, and they did so. That .night they again shared the same bed, and the next day a deliverer appeared in the person of a sorrowing and excited father. On reaching San Francisco tbe angry parent interviewed the agent, who is alleged to have induced the girls to risk their reputations, and asked the offender : "Is your name-■?'' "No," was the sneering response. "My name is John Smith." The insult fired the magazine of the old gentleman's wrath, and he dealt the intelli gence agent a blow in the neighborhood ofthe right auricular appendage, which it is alleged lifted him ever the counter and up the oppo site wail, rile girls are now in the bosoms of their families, and their friends say "are wiser and sadoer by the experience ."—San Francisco Chronicle June 2 4th.
