Z < kunirim.'.iP.l Water board opposes Knowles dam proposal The Montana Water Conser vation Board urged on Friday June 22 in Billings, that Mon tana establish it’s rights to the use of it’s water by develop ment of projects that would ir rigate land in the state. In a resolution adopted in Billings, the board pointed to it’s 29-year record of establish ing 181 Montana projects which store 438,017 acre-feet of water and divert 260,563 acre-feet from streams to furnish a full supply of supplemental water to 405,582 acres. The Board took a strong stand against Federal projects that would divert water from poten tial irrigation projects in Mon tana or adversly affect existing irrigation projects. The proposed Federal Know les prroject in western Mon tana wa s singled out as an ex ample of such a development. In that case the Bureau claimed all of the unappropri ated water upstream because, it built Cannyon Ferry Dam and Reservoir. The Board supports develop ment of projects by private, state and federal groups and agencies that “will create addi tional irrigated acres or fur nish supplemental water to ex isting irrigated acres in order to utilize Montana water in Mon tana to establish Montana’s right to use of it’s water.” Billings Tribal council A meeting is scheduled for Friday June 29, for the Salish and Kooteni Tribal council. Hostess clubs will be the Lake City Garden and extension club and the Das Lakers club. The individual clubs will set up exhibits of their accomplish ments for the year. Mrs Brooke of Polson will give a demonstra tion on cake decorating. A dress revue will be held with Mrs Robert Hamel of St. Ignatius the narrator. A special feature of the day will be the attendance of the members of the Triangle Wo men’s Institute of Grassmerc, Canada, who have exchanged visits with the local club for many years. The public is invited to attend and to view the exhibits, Mrs Conne said.
