Killings Cun Club. As the remains
reached the city they were placed in
charge of Mr. C. F. Karney, our popular
furniture dealer and undertaker, who
urver spares any pains to accommodate
either the liviug or the dead.
Mr. Lindsley « people reside far away iu
the New Fuglaud State of Connecticut.
They ordered that his remains lie forward
ed to New Haven for interment. Mr. Kar
ney was therefore ordered to provide a
suitable casket to convey the remains jf
the poor unfortunate to their last resting
place in the Fast. This was soon accomp
lished, and on Wednesday evening the re
mains were placed in state in the spacious
and elegaut parlors of the Killings Gun;
Club w here they remained until the eveu
ing's east-hound train, when they were
placed almard ami started Fastw ard in
charge of Hon. F. S. Greene, who was dele
gated by the widow of the deceased to
take them to her iu Connecticut.
There cannot lie too much credit given
Mr. C. K. Karuey for the manner in which
he performed Ins duties in this case. The
casket, as it lay in state, was most lieaufi
tiful to look upon, indeed. Not "wild flow
er*." a« the local paper in common
parlance called them, but the lieautilul aud
sweet-scented white lillie* of the prairie
ami desert w hich the God of Nature has
adorned to us in his great goodness, were
most majestually arrangi-d upon the cas
ket. At the head a beautiful cascade of
these flowers, on the breast of the coffin a
cross, and ou its foot end a tlowery grot.-s- I

ivy. At Ô p. iu. the remains were received
by the A. O. U. W. and the Gun Club,
beaded hv the Killings Krass Kami, and
conveyed to the Fpiscopal chapel, where
the Kev. Alfred Brown delivered a most

many virtues of the deceased, and which
was in keeping with the thoughts of all

The mu.-1er, the particulars of which
are briefly detailed in the following lines,
is yet of too recent a date to have lieen
forgotten by our citizens.
Almut 10 o'clock ou the night of July
•*»tb, l-M, Alfred Boyer, Jr., living with his
wife and his fa'her on Peterson creek, four
miles southeast of Deer Lodge, «hot through
the breast and killed his wife, age«! 18
years, to whom he bad lieen marrie«! «inly
about «ix mouths previous at Ware Village,
Mass. The history of the crime having
lieen publishe«l at the time, it is unneces
sary to recite further than that it is well
known that 1 foyer became very jealous of
his wife, that the threatened to leave him,
and that as he said to the officers, imme
diately after his arrest, he preferre«i to kill
her rather than have her go and live with
another man. Whether there was any
occasion for his apprehension has not lieen
showu. He is not a man of much brains
or foelmg, but seems to have lieen jiassion
ately fond of his wife in a mercurial, boyish
kind of a way, up until the time jealousy
made a demon of him.
The case was tried at the Herein tier term
of court, and he w as found guilty of mur
der in the first degree, hut his attorneys,
K now les »V For bis, secure«! a new trial on
th«- ground of newly «liscovered evidence—
the fact of the woman's clothes having
lieen |mwder burned, which was not brought
out in the eviilence In*lore the court. The
case came up again this term. W. Y. Pem
berton, Fsq , District Attorney, appearing
for the Territory, aud Messrs. Knowles &
Forbis for détendant. The plea of the «Je
teuse was that the shot was accidental and
the case to this end was well conducted on
examination and argument, but the facts
as show n iu evidence were too overwhelm
mgly cumulative against that hypothesis
and Mr. Pemberton presented them in one
of the strongest arguments we have heard
at the Montana Bar. The jury was out
only a few hours and returned a verdict of
guilty of murder in the second degree, and
fix<*«l the penalty at .mpnsoument for life.
There seems to have lieen some question in
the mind of one or more jurors as to the
premeditation in the rniud of Koyer to kill
the woman, and the result was the jury
gave him the lienetit of the doubt, but
fixe«! his penalty iu the se«*ond degiee at
the highest limit. The verdict accords
with public sentiment, save those who be
lieve his atrocious crime should have lieen
punished by the highest penalty of the law.
