ORGANIZATION OF A REPUBLICAN CLUB. A Big Meeting of Enthusiastic Repub licans at Harmonia Hall Last Evening. liotkin*' speroh--List of Members of the Neu- CI U b--Appointment of I ommittees, Elr. Harmonia Hall last night was lllledwith enthusiastic Republicans, who had met to gether lor the purpose of organizing a Re publican Club. Every one seemed to be contident of the success of the party and every one was ready to do his Jshare to help on the cause. Mr. A. J. Seligman, as the only officer present of the Republican club of two years ago, called the meeting to order at 8:lö. The first proceeding was the election of a temporary chairman and secretary. Mr. Seligman was unanimously elected to the former office and Mr. C. T. Day to the latter. A motion was then made that a committee from each ward should be appointed by theehairto procure names for the list of membership. The chairman then reported a balance of $ 4 :; in the treasury. The regular business, except the signing of the roll l>y those present was now done, and there were loud calls for a speech from Mr. Botkin, and that gentleman responded sub stantially as follows: Mr. Botkin said that he was so much in the habit of resp<u ding to the demands of his party that it only took one small boy to call him out at a Republican meeting. He could testify to the excellent work that had been done by the Republican club of Helena four years ago and two years ago. The incentive for work this year was even greater than ever. There is no candidate upon the county ticket who is not deserv ing of the support of every Republican— no one who can lie spared to the service of the people. There is no one of them who is not the superior of his opponent on the Democratic ticket in qualification and char, acter. Christopher Columbus might turn pale with envy of the men who discovered some of the candidates on that ticket, and the resurrection of Lazarus was scarcely a greater miracle than was achieved by those who dug up the others. Referring to the campaign in its broader aspects, he called on Republicans to assume the offensive at once and maintain it to the close. With a Democratic administration turning the government over to the men who had sought to degrade labor by placing it upon no other basis than slavery an ad ministration that had turned over the great Northwest, bound hand and foot, to Wall Ktreei—liepublicans need waste no lime with excuses or explanations. They had only to charge the Democratic party with its sins, and trust to that great jury, the tana, for a verdict of of the indictment." "guilty on every count After Mr. Botkin's speech, the members present stepped up to the desk and signed the roll as follows : Albert J Seligman C G Brown C T Day Edwin W Craven Elbert b Weed J E Wilson J Armitage I S G Van Wart Kll Howey Cbas Banck Daniel W Fisk W F Wheeler 1. [For the Herald.] Contracted Idea? 15V REV. F. D. KEI.SEV. As North is opposed to South, as East to the West, as sharpness is the op posite of dulless, and right of wrong, so in the matters of redemption and eternal life two contrasted ideas present themselves. The one idea is contained in the question the young man asked our Lord : "Good Mas ter, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life ? He wants to do some thing. The contrasted idea of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that we allow some good thing to he done for us. Man's instinct is right in believing that a good thing must be done ; bat who is to do it ? Is a sinful man able to do anything which will lead to the pardon of sin and the redemption of the soul ? Let him try and see ; soon will he find a law within him that when he would do good, evil is present with me ; for I delight in the law of God after the inward man ; but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. The cry of such a man is not far off : "Oh wretched man that I am ! Who shall de liver me from the body of this death ?" It is the cry, not what good thing shall I do, but, "Who shall deliver me ?" The sinner needs a deliverer, a savior, a Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. Herein lies the contrasted ideas; the world says: "What can I do? What good thing shall I do ?" and the gospel re plies : Allow vour Savior to save you, cease your vain attempts to do something and lie still in Jesus' arms until he has borne you safe across the waters to the other shore ; "What good thing shall I do?" There is absolutely no good thing I can do which will avail for salvation ; my only hope, my sole help is from outside my puuy arm ; if my salvation depended ou what good things I can do, the only result would he the cry of despair : "Oh, wretch ed man that I am !" Thousands are to-day in just this pre dicament of despair; they have and do try to break away from evil habits and intem perance, of passionate words, evil thoughts and lustful deeds and make better men ot themselves : and there is such a thing as a reformed life; a man of strong will power cau and often does say to a besetting sin, "Begone," and like a dog it takes its de parture at the word of command. But this kind of a reformation, while noble, manly and commendable, is quite another matter from redemption, cleansing and salvation. Sin, like water, dammed up in one place forces itself out in another; and the more the sinner tries to datn it up, the deeper, stronger and larger does he find the stream of sin to be. For this reason we hear Christian people using language concerning sin which seems irrational in its tensity. "I didn't think you were so bad a man," said a sinner after a prayer meeting to a saint of God, who had been makiDg con fession of sin. The diary of I'ayson, the modern saint, is full of language which few of us could use without hypocrisy, language expressive of deep depravity and horrible transgression ; and yet meanwhile his life was one of eminent piety and sur passing godliness. The only possible ex planation lies just here: the more one tries to lead a godly life the more does he realize what holiness truly is, and what sin is. The conscience be comes expert and delicate and what once seemed to us trifling and beneath notice is so no longer. Hence it is so often the experience of men that the more they try to be good, the worse they are. And yet so obstinately do men like their own way, many for years cling to this method trying now one reform, and now another until at last their last proud refuge is proven but a false hope and themselves a ruin ; then as bruised reeds and smoking flax, they submit to the free salvation oflered by One, who is mighty to save ; driven by despair after many a futile effort to save themselves by doing some good thing, at last they cry : "Save, Lord, or I perish !" It is a vivid contrast, this contrast in the two ideas of redemption, the idea of human pride that if I fall I will lift my self up : and this idea of the Bible that man being down in moral ruin, already fallen, Jesus Christ will lift him up. One says, "What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" the other says, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt he saved." iTAR RK. flOUGHvURE , Emetics and Fois'"' 25& trade' 1 mark.
