The whole state is thoroughly alarmed at the possibility of a shut down of the Butte mines in case the federal government should enjoin the Washoe smelter at Anaconda to pre vent the destruction of timber in the government reserve by smelter fumes. There is irony in the fact that the Amalgamated company sought to have the reserve extended to embrace the timber which it is now charged with destroying. No haste has been shown by President Roosevelt thus far in dealing with the situation. His action iu ordering an investiga tion was fair and conservative, ami as the case is in process of adjudica tion in the United States court, it is entirely improbable that the govern ment will take the summary action that is feared by the people of Butte. The continued operation of tho mines, upon which thousands of toilers are dependent, is much more essential to Montana than the preservation of a few trees that may be endangered by the smelter smoke. The Bitter Boot is industrially independent, of Butte and Anaconda. All the towns of the state, however, are interdepen dent in a way, and we desire to see all sections as prosperous and con tented as is this. SITTER ROOT VALLEY AM PLY R EPRESENTED The Bitter Root valley is represent ed by an excellent fruit exhibit and a number of enthusiastic fruit growers, at the National Apple show, which opened in Spokane Monday. Among those in attendance from Hamilton are J. O. Read, Sid Ward, Miles Rom ney, Geo. F. Brooks and M. C. Reed, who left for the falls city the first of the week. Residents of other sections of the county are also iu attendance. The big show will be a great source of instruction to the fruitgrowers from western Montana. This valley's proudest product is the famous Mein tosh Red, but in Spokane it will be subjected to a comparison with the specialties from the fruit valleys of Washington, Idaho and Oregon, which is a severe test of superiority. In the distribution of the prizes, which ag gregate $35,000, Bitter Root apples will probably receive recognition, but the instruction gained by those from this section who are attending the fair will be worth more than the tro phies that may be captured.
