EST HONORS AT THE EXPOSITION. Chicago, Dec. 9.—The land show closed Sunday night with a flourish of .trumpets, the Bitter Root valley ex hibit carrying away the palm in every •respect, so far as individuals were '•concerned. The Great Northern rail way exhibit, representing the great northwest, including Montana, Idaho and Washington, was perhaps as large, but the Bitter Root, occupying as it did, the head of the main aisle „at the extreme north end of the build ing, was the drawing card through out the entire 16 days of the show, and caused great enthusiasm among the Montana people present, as well as those from other states whose ad miration was not dimmed by jealousy „or pique. Some of the representatives of other states were so amazed at the exhibit that they could not believe .that, in the past few years, horticulture had advanced to such a point in the valley, that it could, from one self-contained valley, produce such a display. After Colorado and Michigan got over their feelings, they ibecame more friendly and joined in the admiration of the Bitter Root ex hibit. So, at the last, they were as hearty suporters of the Bitter Root .as they had formerly been enemies. Show Closes. The song sung by the soloist of the Hawaiian singers to close the show, was "Bitter Root, My Bitter Root," which was applauded to the echo. The verses were written by Fred Bennett, brother of Frank J. Bennett, president of the Bitter Root Valley Irrigation company, and were sung to the music of "Maryland, My Mary land." The verses follow: "Bitter Root, My Bitter Root." ■"In Bitter Root, we took our stand In Montana, in Montana It is the home of apples grand, •Qur Bitter Root, our Bitter Root. Sangster in the Woman's Home Companion for December, "on those who deliver goods, on the postoffice employes and in the express offices the country through. Never have I seen young women so tired, haggard and dragged | out as those who serve the public in ' the weeks preceding Christmas. The hours at that time are much longer than usual, and the endeavor is to meet the demands of anxious and hur ried customers who do not know what ■ they want, and are bewildered amid the variety of tempting articles dis played. "Physically and mentally, the clerks, ; messengers, cashiers and every one j connected in mercantile pursuits in the holiday shopping season are worn j to shreds. Much of their fatigue I might be prevented were buyers con siderate, and if the caution come too late for this year, will not those who j need it make a note for another sea son? Books and packages sent by mail and gifts transmitted by express as well as the vast bulk of Christmas correspondence should stretch over December instead of being congested in the two or three days before Christmas."
