TOM GREGORY TALKS
ABOUT EARLY DAYS
HELD ON TO FERGUS LAND AND
FAITH IS JUSTI
FIED.
Thomas Gregory, the well known
Stockman and rancher who resides
about three miles from Straw, was in
the city yesterday for the purpose of
paying his taxes and paid the office cf
the Democrat an appreciated call. Mr.
Gregory is one of the pioneers of Fer
gus, having come over here in '81 and
settled on the ranch which he now owns.
Like all old timers, Mr. Gregory has
some interesting reminiscences of the
early days in this county.
"1 came over to Fergus county in
1881," said Mr. Gregory to the editor
of the Democrat," and intended to set
tle in Lewistown but after looking over
the situation, drove back out across the
Rock creek bench and located a por
tion of what is now my ranch.
'I must confess that it was not an
especially inviting prospect in those
days but somehow I always had an
idea that this country would amount
lo something and just held on. My
faith has been abundantly justified and
1 am truly thankful that 1 settled where
( did.

lonesome, especially for my wife. Our

one day, the late Christ King and fam

recalled.

Mr. Gregory was recently offered a

that Fergus land is good enough for

good a place as he cares to live in so
lie refused the offer.

ENJOYABLE DANCE
GIVEN BY EAGLES
HARMONY HALL SCENE OF
BIG GATHERING THANKS
GIVING NIGHT.
One of the most successful and
pleasant balls ever given in the city
was that which was given last Thurs
day evening (Thanksgiving night) by
the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
The boys spared no expense in
preparing for their annual hop and
every member of the lodge constitut
ed himself a committee of one to as
sist the regularly appointed commit
tees in the work of entertaining their
guests. m The attendance was about
the largest ever seen at a dance in
this city and not one thing occurred
to mar the keen pleasure of the merry
dancers. Mahana's fine five-piece or
chestra furnished the music and until
2 o'clock in the morning, the dance
went merrily on.
The Eagles have one of the biggest
if not the largest fraternal organi
zation in the city. They have been
doing some hustling for new members
during the last few weeks and initia
tions are very frequent as a result.
The local lodge is also in a splendid
condition financially, there being over
one thousand dollars in the treasury
at this time. Over eight dollars were
cleared at the dance Thursday even
It is more than likely that this fra
ternal order will follow the lead of the
Masons and put up a home of their
own next year. They expect to pur
chase a good lot very shortly with
the expectation of erecting a modern
hall as quickly as the arrangements
can be perfected.
