PUNS OF 6. N. FOR NEXT YEAR CHIEF ENGINEER HOGELAND AND RESDENT ENGINEER HERVN CONFIRM REPORTS. MAKING PROGRESS FROM THE EAST Although the Democrat - has this week stated, upon high authority, the plans of the Great Northern, as affecting this section, for next year, the confirmation of all this is pleas ing and interesting. This confirma tion appeared in the Great Palls Tri bune yesterday in the following: That the grading and tunnel work on the New Rockford-Lewistown cut off of the Great Northern out of Lew istown to a connection with the joint line of the Milwaukee and Great Northern near Grass Range will be completed so as to permit of track laying by June 1, 1917, is the expec tation of the engineers. Resident Engineer P. S. Hervln, who returned yesterday from Lewis town after a trip to that place in com pany with Chief Engineer A. H. Hoag land, states that the big tunnel on the line, which will have a length of 3,100 feet, is about one-half coip^leted. As largo a force as can be employed is engaged on the work. The second tunnel, having a length of 900 feet, is about one-third done, while considerable of the grading work for other portions of the line lias been practically completed and progress is being made on other parte. It is the belief that all this work will be finished by June 1 so as to permit of the laying of track over that por tion of the line. The Milwaukee has practically com pleted the grading of its line from Grass Range on east to Winnett, which will be used jointly by the two railways. Track laying will probably be commenced next spring. Prom Win nett to the Musselshell river the line is 1o be built by the Great Northern and shared with the Milwaukee. A Great Northern locating party is at present engaged in locating the route for this portion of the line. It is not known when construction work will be started. Working from the east that portion of the line has already been com pleted and is under operation as far west as Lambert, Richland county, Montana, and as far east as Watford City, McKenzie county, North Dakota. This line was built south from a junc tion with the Great Northern main line at Snowden, a distance of 14.3 miles to Pairyiew, and then east, crossing the state line to Watford City, a total length of 50.6 miles. Prom Pairview the line was built west through Richland county a distance of 36.4 miles to Lambert, giving a to tal east and west line of 72.7 miles. All of this line has been under op eration for a year or two. Work has been in progress all this year upon an extension from Lambert westward tllrough Richland county and down to Richey, in Dawson county, a distance of about 25 miles. Track was laid into Richey on November 29 and that por-1 tion of the line is being operated to a certain degree under construction forces. It is possible that a further extension will be made next year to Circle, Dawson county, between 45 and 50 miles further west. This leaves between 110 and 120 miles of railroad to be constructed between Circle and the Musselshell river before the east and west lines can be connected. FOR ms Eminent Commander W. D. The surface of the Caspian sea has been gradually sinking for several years until now navigation has been impeded at several points. ENROL GRADE SCR LS AN INCREASE OF EIGHTEEN PER CENT IS SHOWN AS COMPARED WITH LAST YEAR. SOME NEEDS THAT ME URGENT The Lewistown city schools now have an enrollment of 1,075 children, an increase of 18 per cent over last year, and taxing the capacity of the school facilities to the limit. It is not necessary to say that the constant aim is to increase the effi ciency of the school. To train chil dren for .good citizenship is the pur pose of the public schools. That re quires attention to the three-fold na ture of tile child; body, mind and heart. The first requirement for good citizenship is a healthy body together with trained capacity to make an honest living. The necessity for the former has too long been neglected. To make better provision for the same, a health department was instituted last year in charge of a school nurse. The results of the first year were so gratifying that the department has been retained and the work expand ed. This year specialists, who kindly volunteered, are making an examina tion of every child, conditions are notated, and a report is sent to every parent. The nurse follows this up with a'personal visit as far as possible and in this direct way brings in struction and advice where necessary to the parent. In addition she takes into the home needed information in regard to care of children, and san itation. Under her direction is the sanitation of the school buildings and the instruction of children in health and physical well being. Closely linked to the above is the work in physical training, providing for the physical development of school children. All the children are re quired to do is regular and system atic work every day. These periods rome as a relaxation to the mental work and aim at stimulation of physi cal vigor. The manual work is as good as ever. During the summer the boys of this department built another school house under the supervision of the director. The work was done very creditably and cheaper than the district could have secured it under contract. The school house building is becoming to be a habit of this de partment. The domestic science department is maintaining its high standard of work. Well organized and directed by a de voted and hard working director, the work in the department is introducing the girls to the essentials in home making. Add to this the industrial arts work, training awkward fingers how to become nimble and skilful, and awakening an appreciation for the artistic and beautiful in life, and the excellent work in music, and it can be understood how the city schools are aiming at the symmetrical devel opment of the children of the city. An exhibit representing all phases of school work was gathered and sent to the state fair at Helena this fall. This was added to the exhibit gath ered from the country schools to make a county exhibit. Fergus county re ceived second prize in competition with the counties of the state. The upper grades of the school are under departmental organization. The fifth and sixth grades form one de partment and the seventh and eighth another. ThiB makes it possible to get a larger number of pupils of the same grade together, and economize time in instruction. Also teachers may specialize in one branch of work with resultant increased efficiency. A big factor in this arrangement is the opportunity offered for individual help to pupils. In co-operation with the high school, an evening school was organized. Classes are organized in all the busi nesB branches, salesmanship, sewing and in the English language for non English speaking people. * These classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 7 to 9:30 o'clock. The present enrollment numbers 125 students. The public schools should be a com munity service institution. Their em ployes. the teachers, should be public servants, not in the restricted sense of simply teaching children reading, writing and arithmetic, but in all man ner possible they should serve and touch the many sides of life and in terests of the community. Such is the aim of the Lewistown schools. In order effectively to reach out beyond the school room doors, it is some times necessary to batter down waits of prejudice and habitual limitations ret to a teacher's activities. But the walls are coming down. The need for enlargement and im provement are measured only by the growth of our city and the vision of its leaders. There are at the present time a number of urgent interests that might be centered in the schools. Mention may be made at this time of only the supervised and directed play ground work, particularly for summer months. A kindergarten department becomes increasingly urgent. The present facilities will not allow it. A new building for next year is Imperative. The hoard is taking the necessary steps. With the increased facilities 11. is hoped to extend the usefulness of the schools. The patrons of the city schools are kindly minded towards the same. .Without their support little could be accomplished. Whatever of merit the schools may possess must reflect with credit upon a patriotic and intelligent patronage. THE KOLIN BANK. The charter for the Kolin State bank, incorporated recently with a capital of $20,000, has been granted and the bank will open its doors for business in about 60 days, with U. P. Read, for some time past connected with the First National Bank of Lew istowri, as cashier. Marshall, admitted this but cited the fact that the election was* a special bond election on July 31, and that the voters were limited to taxpayers and that this does not constitute an election such as the statute applies to. The matter was taken under advisement by the court. In the case of H. Baugets, charged with dogging stock on the range, the state moved for a dismissal, a recent decision by the supreme court making this necessary. J. M.
