Lawrence used to be a republican in Minnesota, but that party is in the majority in the North Star state. The Northern Pacific Coal company has commenced aggressive operations against the locked-out miners at Tim berline, by having twenty of them ar rested, charged with threatening and intimidating the new men brought in by the company. As nearly as one can judge from the dispatches these Knights of Labor have conducted themselves in a most ex emplary manner, and are deserving of the sympathies of the people. It seems to us, a needless iocurring of expense to the county, and a proceed ing witich will not redound to the credit of an already unpopular com pany. The Knights of Labor organi zation is one for mautual improvement and protection, and it mout not be considered for a moment that they are worse than the best of our citizens, as a whole. 1The letter from Dr. Rotwitt, which we piublish in this issue, throws upon the Republican Central Committee of Fergus county a mat important duty, . that of selecting a candidate for repro Mntative. uIn order to make the norm nation successful, it will be necessary t for the committee to select the beat man that can be found. He should be a man that has been identified with r the county long enough to be thor oughly familiar with all its needs. He should be a businesn man who has autlicient ability to inspire confidence I in the pelople. He should be a man who is popular with the people, and who in active and energetic. We be lieve such a man can be found, and if selected would make a strong race, even in Democratic Meagher. It is not too much to ask that the commit tee lay aside all personal and local feel ing, and select the best man, wherever I he may be found, and we have confi deuce that such a choice will be made. L. Lrwww r, 1.i'nm t'enti t'l (anmittie, MMeamtr e'. I --__________ stimmtmigT W NIluLE The death of Thomas J. Leard ere. ates a vacancy on the Republican ticket of this county for the office of superintendent of schools, to be filed by the county central committee. Ac cording to the rule whibch usually pre vails in the filling of vcancies, where more than one candidate has been be fore the convention, the appointment would naturally fall to Miss W. A. Shipman of the Judith, as she received the next highest number of votes; but Miss Shipman can base her claims on better grounds than those. She is a woman in every way well qualified to hold the position and do it full jus tice, as i conceded by all who know her. She holds "life certificates" from the states of Vermont and New Jersey, I as well as the highest grade certificate issued in Montana. She has had many years of experience as a teacher in the beat schools of the East and has taught I successfully several years in Montana. She not only knows how to teach book knowledge, but is thoroughly familiar with every detail of school manage ment, and school law. Besides these eduaetional qualifications, she is a - woman of more than average ability a in other ways, and is possessed of boundless energy, as those can testify I who were in this place during the first t winter she taught here. SThere are many good reasons why the last two superintendents of this county have not done as well by this end of the county as its citizens would like, not the least of which is the long . distances to be traveled. But those who say that experience here is against I the eficiency of a woman for the place, especially as our county is now, and Miss Shipmn the applicant for the place, are either mistaken or prej u udiced. We do not know that she would or could now accept the place upon the ticket, though we believe she would, { were the appointment tendered her. - Should her name be placed upon the ticket, as it probably will be, she will be the most efficient of olficers.
