With election day drawing near, the republican situation in many sections looks desperate and in many others hopeless. Confirma tion of this view is found in the facts that President Harding has felt constrained to write a letter to republican floor leader Mondell designed to raise republican hopes and in which he pleads for the re-election of the present republi can do-nothing congress. William R. Wood, chairman of the re publican congressional commit tee, has been compelled to revise downward his prediction of a re publican majority in the next house, and practically every mem ber of the president’s cabinet has been sent out on the stump. Candidate Fess assures the country that the United States under the Harding administra tion have preserved their “moral courage.” This makes Newberry, Daugherty and Goldstein blush. Everything from the safety pin on the baby’s diaper to the tombstone over the grave of the oldest inhabitant is taxed under the Fordney-McCumber high tar iff bill. U. S. Guns Guard Vladivostok Toklo. —Lawlessness reigns In Vladl- j vostok as the result of the approach of a victorious "red” army, official dis patches say. The French consulate was attacked and foreigners have ap- . pealed to their governments for pro- j tection. The American consul has en- ; gaged a refugee center for Americans, a building flying the American flag and guarded by the guns of an Ameri can cruiser. Two Japanese cruisers and throo Japanese destroyers also are in Vladi vostok harbor to aid the protection of foreigners. Balfour May Retire London. —According to tbe Times’ parliamentary correspondent It Is con sidered probable that Lord Balfour may retire from politics altogether. This store is fully awake—-thoroughly aroused to the incompara ble worth of having and holding the confidence of our customers. There is no cash on hand, no goods in stock that compare with the im portance of a store holding the confidence of its customers. This has taken fifteen years of {jatient trying, a good deal of advertising and a arge number of individuals all interested in gaining confidence to build this business up to where it is, and we would ask you one ques tion: Do you think for one minute that we can afford to misrepresent-- to lose your confidence?
