R. C. Ten liroeck I accompanied by Master Howard MaJ- j dox spent Sunday last as guests of THE BEARTOOTH RANGE" By C. RAY MILLS Oh! Mountain green, Snow caps in distance seen. Oh, Sky bo blue, Clouds of a lighter hue Oh! Sun so bright, Withal a sense of pure delight, The Beartooth Range gives to the sight The canyons deep and dark Castled cliffs steep and stark, The frothing foaming streams along Their courses run #ith many a song Bringing their crystal ice-cold wealth To many sweet meadows and fields, and health To thousands of people in lands below From the year long drifts of ice and snow In the Beartooth Range which ao well I know The calm clear lakes, myriad abound, Oa high plateaus and in canyona found, Home of the speckled flashing trout. Sport toe good for kings to pull them out. The shady, cool, green, quiet nooks, Surpass the peace described in books Thickets of lodge pole, and spruce, and fir Scent the pure air better than balsam and myrrh In the Beartooth Range where the grandeurs are. Home of the Blue Grouse, noble and mighty tribe, The shy Deer, and Bear also thrive The Beaver toils with Natures tools And sticks of Aspen to create more pools The day-break anthem of the coyote pack From cliff to mountain side is echoed back And over all the Eagle soars in lofty flight In the Beartooth Range where all is right. Ho, the lone shepherd, his dog, and his flock, Ten thousand feet high, and the towering rock, Of loftier peaks in the sunset glow Radiant light over all reflected by snow Which never melts all but feeds and keeps green Mountain daises, and flowers, the like is not seen Else-where but here, and no artists taints Could show on flat canvas, with colors and paints Such a picture pastoral, sublime, and glorious As this Beartooth Range which is spread here before us. The cattle grazing on the sweet mountain grass From hilly park to creek bank pass. The quiet sunny days and starry nights Are to them, indeed, one of their respites From the semi-famine of winters dark and cold, In the valleys, on the ranches, where of old, They waited with the patience of their kind For the grass ami flowers which Spring would surely find On the Beartooth Range which they in Autumn left behind. Oh! Give me bat a book of thoughts, in lines, Of perfect measure, and by greater minds, A store of food to feed the body of me That I may the better and the longer see The Beauty, and the Grandness, and the Good, Which from Elements, and Time, and Puny Man withstood, To furnish for my mind a greater feast, This God-built, Natures Temple, not rivaled in the East The Beartooth Range outlasts both Man and Beast. The huge, majestic, works of One All-Wise Command from all respect, but not from size The beauties of the Range, of which I sing. Are in themselves a most exclusive thing Myself in times gone by have had to roam O'er many seas, and lands, ere here I found a home Greater things, alike, yet unlike, I will swear I've often seen, but nothing to compare, With the Range which is named for the molars of the Bear. The woods-man with his axe, and chain, The demon Fire assisted by the Hurrican The sniveling, tender-foot Dude, and all his kind Demanding trails be built, and posted with a sign, When alT he really needs, had he observing mind Is but to look for rubbish left along the line By others like him, quite, in thught and mind All these, and others too, I say, cannot a lasting mark Leave defacing, or defiling, in the least a single Park Of the Beartooth Range which is older than the Ark. When Sphinx, and Pyramid, and the oldest wonders of the world. Forgotten are by Mankind, and the newest history curled With Age, in that far distant time If beings then exist, who try to write in rhyme Surely there will be among them some who still will try To praise these Shining Mountains, and the beauties which therein lie Thnis Baartooth Range of Mountains, still covered by the sky. Oh! Mountains green, Snow caps in distance seen, Oh! Sky so blue, Clouds of lighter hue, Withall a sense of pure delight, The Beartooth Range is Exquisite. v. C. R.
