W. Columbus and L. W. Lyons of the Red Lodge Electric Company. And are willing that radio fans should be amused and profit by their evening experiences. They have a faculty for finding out things so it will pay radio devotees to follow them in this paper each week. NO. 1: THE BIRTH OF A FAN his car when I raised the window and announced, "Come on in and listen to the radio. I've got Cuba." "No, thanks," he retorted, ' I've got to tune in on a night's rest. It's bad enough being a motor fan." But he hesitated just long enough to ask me whether I could get "static", too. And that settled it. He who hesitates is—well, nowadays, a radio bug. Cuba was coming in pretty well, j Crisp air. The ne : g\borhood turning in for the night. The batteries new , 'and working-first rate. Smith was "That's the first decent radio set 1 immensely impressed. I've heard," he declared, after swing ing the dials around by himself until he got one of the nearby stations ttnd found it was playing his favorite song. I "What's the name of this outfit, any way? I held my hand over the name plate and asked him to sit down a moment, "South," I began. "You've got to have a good set, of course. But that isn't all. You've apt to know how to operate it. I wouldn't advise you to buy this set and guarantee you im mediate results any more than I would recommend a Rolls-Royce to a Zulu, Furthermore, different seta give dif feïent results in different places. ; This one might not work quite as well ! in your house as it does here. Then 1 I "That's not so good," Smith worried, "What have I got to do; take a chance on getting one that won't work ? I again, it might work better.' I "That's just why I wanted yon to sit down," I explained. 'The radio m te f-WVtTM« KW0E BY THE RED LODGE ELECTRIC ÇO. And you'll have five or ten times that much fun out of it even if you dont decide on one right, away. "But is an aerial necessary? Won't some of these machines operate on a loop, or whatever you call it?" It depends where you live and how much of the world's broadcasting you want to pick up," I said. "An inside areial, whether it's rigged up in the room or concealed in the machine, cuts down your reception about one third. This wouldn't make any differ ence to anyone living right near a number of stations, but in your case I'd advise getting all you can get. "A loop's handy iq an apartment house where an antenna is hard to put by the other tenants. But in your case it's different. Put up a goood aerial." Smith had a notion that he could get exceptional results by running a wire from his chimney to the top of the garage, a distance of two hun dred and fifty feet but I explained, to him that a radio set works best with so much aerial and no more. It was just one of the many points he was to learn, now that he had fallen! When Smith left for home—at two A. M.—another fan had been born to radio. It gets them all, sooner or later. But the next point is to "get" it. up, or where the roof is already wired Next Week, No. 2: Trying One Out. Copyright by the Ullman Features Service 60-tf. Marcelling—Call 27-J.
