Our Town And You The Chamber of Com merce believes that three recent actions of Carib bean Atlantic Airlines have not been for the best interests of Our Town. Their reduc ion in ser vice to the Virgin Is lands by the withdraw:l of a regular freight flight is .not in keeping with their expresssd policy. The volume of refrigerated cargo out of Sun Juan will steadily increase with the cessation of the Fur pess Lines service to the West Indies. Thus Carib 2ir’s reducing freight flights hdndicaps irgin Islands merchants with its resulting effect on all of the residents. The Chamber of Com merce believes that Caribair should reconsider this decision and agreel to carry @ll refer cargo Shop At \ A. H. RIISE For Fine Quality - Liquors Food Products N NOURISHING BREADS BAKED DAILY QUALITY ICE CREAM By The St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce prompty b:tween Puerto Rico and the Virgin Is lands. ~ Without the courtesy of «flicially noiifying Virgin Islands business Caribair has increased its freight rates from three to five cents per pound. The Chamb:r feels that a 66 2-3 per cent increase on gross pounds at this time is excessively high and not justifiable when gross poundage by steamship is only five and one half cents per pound. With the pending reduction of ot her types of carrier ser§ vice to the Virgin Islands it seems unbusinesslike to increase rates at a time when the volume poten tial of freight to Caribair may soon be doubled. On June 4 Caribair no tified the Chamber that effective the next day, The Home Journal June excursion fares be tween Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands would be eliminated. “'« - = ~ Since Most -of the Vir %in Islands passengers are usiness people whofly to San Juan for limited periods, the elimination of the excursion rates is, in ef fect, an increase ir fares for this type 0} trade. The Chamber of Commerce feels that such an increase in passenger rates at this time will materially effect the operations of Caribair in the Virgin Island and create a greater desire here for change in existing regulations which grant C.ribbean Atlantic Air lines sole shuttle"service be tween Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
