THE HOME JOURNAL 2nd Year Water Island Project Hit By Controversy Work on the develop ment of Water Is. as a tour ist resort has hit a snag as a result of a controversy be tween the lessees and gov ernment officials regarding proposed changes in the lease. If technicalities raised by the government should block progress we may feel compellied to reduce present activities as lessee to a ske leton caretaker basis until such technicalites are straightened out, regardless of whether this may take weeks, months or years, the lessees stated. The Governor called to their attention that the lease requires them to coen struct and have in substan tial operation within five years a resort hotel of not less than fifty rooms. Although I approved the lease between the Develop ment Authority and the Water Island Corporation, after discussions with the of fice of Territories, I believe that it will be necessary to make certain modifications in the lease in order to meet possible changing conditions, the Governor declared. He said the lease should be amended to provide for a review of rental at the end of each ten years,after inspection by the municipality of the ac counts of Water Island, Inc. Some such modification will be necessary if the lease between the Dept. of Interior and the Municipality is to be approved within the immediaie future, he stressed. - The lessees, who disclosed that they have already put St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Saturday, September 6, 1952 Seeks New Post For Gereau Governor de Castro is now making arrange ments to transfer Adolph Gereau from the Police Department to some other department or agency. One possibility was said to be his reassignment to the full-time position of Direc: or of Civil Defense, from which heresigned on June 30. | The Police Commission which heard complaints filed against Gereau by Police Director Earle Charles, recommended tc the Governor that the Chief Clerk be transferred to a position of similar classification in some ot her department in view of the friction existing be tween him and t h e Di rector. : The Director suspended Mr. Gereau for thirty days this week but the Commission a greed he should remain on leave with pay pending ap pointment to the new position. 20 New Teachers In Elementary Schools ; Nearly twenty new teachers and substitutes were assigned to duty in the elementary schools with the start of the school year «n September 3. ‘Most of them are recent high school graduates. All the incumbents are seeking re-election. In Christiansted Country ex actly half a dozen have in dicated a desire to run,and in Christiansted Town, a mong those seeking election are former Councilmen Frank Jacobs and Alphonso Forbes, who went down to de feat in 1950. : Councilmen MacFarlane and Gardine of Frederiksted Town face the toughest fight. It is believed that A x el Schade, former vice president of the Virgin Islands Corporation. will seek election from that district. Another powers ul opponentis Mrs. Ann E. Christian, sister of Police Judge Christian, who has al ready announced her candida cy. Another Christian, Peter, who owns the First and Last Stop Bar and Grocery, has also announced his intention to run. ~ Meanwhile, it is generally believed that Paul Joseph, Edi tor of the West End News, will seek election as Member at Large. In 1950, Crucian veoters threw out all but three of their nine legislators, Dr. and Mrs. Wiles Here Dr. and Mrs. V. McKinley Wiles returned to St. I'homas last week. Dr. Wiles is here at the invitation of the Legis lative Assembly to serve as U rologist Specialist. He will resume practiceat Bourne Field. No. 205 Seeks SII,OOO For Tax Officer In Virgin Is. The Bureau of Internal Revenue has agreed to as sign one of its agents to the Virgin Islands on a full time basis to assist in ad ministering the income tax laws,provided the local gov ernment will pay the cost. The salary paid to such an officer would be $11,250 a year, and this amount would be shared equally by the two municipalities. In urging approval of the procedure, Governor de Castro declared that the assignment of the internal revenue agent on a pzrma nent basis would result in a tremendous improvement in the collection of income taxes. es i i e Gov. Be Castro Ordered To Bed Till Monday Governor de Castro was ordered to bed yesterda to recover from an attaci’s, oflaryngitis. He was forced to cancel his suppertime chat this weekand all ot h er engagements, in cluding a reception for Sir Kenneth Blackburne, Governor of the Leeward Island, who is en route to the British Virgin Island. The Governor is expect ed to be back to his desk on Monday. Mrs. Wiles Jis a registered nurse and holds a degree in Nursing Education from Co lumbia University. She is at present on_ leave of absence from the Y.W.C.A. in New York where she is Director of the School of Practical Nurs ing. Previously, Mrs. Wiles was Superintendent of Nurses at Red Cross Hospital ir Louis ville,Ky.
