Providence, Mareh 10.—A drive to clean drugs out of Rhode [sland and hzlt the narcotic traffic is under way, with a bill giving unlimited powers in the apprehension and conviction of ad dicts and pedlars to be voted om in a few days by the General Assembly. Mrs. Isabel Ahearn O’Neil, a repre sentative, sponsors the bill, pattern:d after the Sherwood Act, which gives po lice authority to prosecute violators of the Prohibition Act. Federal agents, who hLave a large dis trict to cover, are not alwavs on hand when the police learn that trafiie in drugs, and to make the raiad and seizure their presence is requied under present laws, Therefore the pilice have been bandicapped ““The present law governing the pro secution of dope cases has been entively inadequate,”” said Superintendent of Po lice William F. O’Neil today. *“The police are almost powerless to act in such matters. “*We may know that in a certain house there is a large quantity of narcotic drugs, but we cannot muke a rzid or swear out a search warrant. Neither can we get one from the Federal aatho rities until we have a saie on the ven dor. A law that wou'd campower the police to swear out search warrants for drugs, as we can illicit hquor, will aid immensely in wiping out the trulie.
