The National Republican com mittee will meet at Louisville May 10, in conjunction with the National League. Thf. West Virginians at Wash ington wait in vain for the covet ed prizes. Miller bas not been called to succeed Mason. Watts is still out id the cold and few indeed have been the glances tnat Grover has cast our way. Mr. Pendleton has had a few post Masters provided for, but not enough has been done to satisfy the applicants from this State. The politicians are fretting and fuming and the only word that has come from Grover was'wait.' Taney of the ltegister has not secured his foreign mission, Judge Lucus wants to go some where and Senaton Gall of Phi lippi, is still seeking for some of the "soft snaps." A prominent Democrat told a Telegsam re porter yesterday that West Vir ginia would not get the same re cognition from this administra tion that had been accorded her by President Harrison. Several of the -most prominent West Vir ginia Democrats are kicking-and others are mad as "hornets" a1 the way the thing is going. than any other newspaper pub lished in Harrison county.? Is there a practical solution to the county road problem? After years and years of inactivity- the whole country at last is aroused to the fact that good roads, at all seasons of the year, are the greatest blessings that can be given any community in the way of public improvements. Every community that has secured good roads, leading to its chief town, county seatorcommfrcialcenter, no matter how great has been the cost, has found the increase in land values and the higher stimu lus given to business to far out weigh all arguments about econ omy and high taxef. Thousands of dollars are wasted?thrown away every year in Harrison county in feeble attempts at road repairing, or in other words in scraping a lot of clay to the center of the pike, in the sum mer, in order to provide the "raw material" for a "hub-scraping" muJ hole the following winter. If these roads were properly graded, drained and macadam ized once ihey could be kept in repair for a very small sum an nually. Let us close our eyes and imagine good roads leading from every part of the county to Clarksburg. It i$ not possible in the space at our disposal to enumerate the manifold advant ages that would result. Such improvements would cost a lot of money, it is true, but the tax payers could well afford it. The work could be commenced and carried forward each year. Why not improve 2 miles of the main roads leading from the county seat the first year, and two miles each succeeding year until a good road penetrated every section of Harrison county? Could there be an objection to this plan? It would certainly benefit the en tire county and could not be op posdd on the ground of being for any favored community. Mr. Henrv Watterson who is recognized as the author of the Democratic platform of 1892, gives the following explanation of the Democratic idea in this week's Courier-Journal, of which he is the versatile editor. Com ing from Mr. Wattersen it ought to be purely Democratic. Read it my farmer friend,my esteemed laboring man?read it and tell us how it "strikes you:" Mr. Cleveland is no more his own platform than he is his own party. He stands where his party placed him. on a free-trade platform, and his public utter ances are in perfect accord with the principles of an enlightened and a dis-enthralled Democracy. Now the party approaches the time when it must put its creed into deeds. It has control of the Executive and Legislative de partments. It must provide an enormous revenue. It must sub stitute revenue for protective duties, and relieve the tax payers of all tribute to those organiza tions which have usurped the power of government and have plundered the people without compassion or remorse. Abolish the sugar subsidy, and raise 525,000,000 by a sugar tax. Raise, if needed, $25,000,000 by a tax on coffee, and 'if there is still a yawning chasm between receipts and expenditures, which economy can not bridge, raise $25,000,000 by a tax on tea. Then give us a revenue tariff on woolens, on linen, on cutlery, on carpets, on clothing, on tools of every kind and on household utensils of all descriptions.
