foot and knee, a complaint from which
he haa suffered for many years, and
which is no doubt exaggerated

and enormous strain on his strength
which he has undergone since
March 4. The trouble has been hang
ing about him for several weeks, but
has so Increased In severity that he will
be compelled to lay up for absolute rest
in order to make himself good to be at
his post of duty at the special meeting
of congress next month. It will be
necessary for him to deny himself to
visitors for the present, and his friends
will, of course, observe his request that
ho bo permitted to get all possible ben
efit from his vacation.**
In an interview, Thursday night, Dr.
Bryant, at Gray Gables, was asked:
"Doctor, a number of conflicting stor
ies are told concerning the Illness of
the president. Some of them make the
matter very serious. You would con
fer a great favor by making some kind
of an official statement."
"The president Is all right," said the
doctor, emphatically.
"From what Is he suffering?"
"He Is suffering from rheumatism,
Just as It was reported this afternoon.

cuss tariff changes and will repeal the

Justice Samuel Blatcjiford passed
quietly and peacefully from earth at
7:20 Friday evening. He retained con
sciousness until an hour or two before
his death. There was no sudden'
change in his condition, simply the
gradual slipping away which has been
taking place for the last week. The
arrangements for the funerut aro not
yet completed, but the body will prob
ably be taken to Washington for in
terment.
Murdered the Whole Family.

egram has been received by Sheriff
Burton to arrest Albert Baumbarger
for murdering D. S. Krider, wife and
four children. Krider was a well-to-do
German farmer residing two miles
southeast of Cando. Baumbarger, the
murderer, is & nephew of Krider, work
ing for the murdered man since last
falL The murder was committed early
Friday morning. Officers are scouring
the country and will probably capture
him.

TJhe Norfolk & Western railroad
is understood to have cut its rate
in consideration of the regularity
'with which the freight will be
offered, and also through a desire
to bring into prominency its new
line to the West.
: The steel company has put 700
of its cars at the disposal of the
coke companies and forty cars
will be shipped daily over the
Norfolk & Western, taking near
ly, if not all, these 700 cars to
keep the supply going and empty
cars coming, allowing four trains
of forty cars each, on the road
way and two trains at each end
loading and unloading,
f The amount of money invested
in coking coal lands in West Vir
ginia during the last five years is
estimated at $20,000,000.
When the B. & O. completes it
short line to Morgantown and the
Pennsylvania builds the P. V. &
C. up the Monongahela, the coke
in the Fairmont region will be
placed more directly on the mar
kets of Pittsburgh and the west.
