Tariff ReTliUa The men who have undertaken in the extremity of their unwis dom. to tear up, by the roots, the protective tariff system of the United States, it seems, are not to be halted without the most de termined effort Mr. Carlisle recently remarked, in a very indifferent way, that it was quite unfortunate that the tariff agita tion upset the business of the country, yet it could not be avoided; the work must proceed. It is not an ordinary situation; nothing like it has been seen for a long time, and it is to be hoped will not again be witnessed by this generation at least. The one deplorable fact is that an im mense numbar of people are out of work, many of them face to face with the problem how to find bread for themselves and families. Under such circumstances the ap peal of the work people to Con gress should come with exceed ing force and impressiveness. With tbem it is indeed a condi tion and not a theory. They must live, and in order to li"e they must work. Mr. Carlisle, Mr. David A. Wells, Mr. Chair man Wilson, Mr. Springer and their theoietical associates may cooly disregard existing condi tions, and may go on in their I blindness; but the party which they represent will find the ditch much sooner than any one may expect. As the weeks and months roll by. the consuming wrath of the American people will rise in fury It will not be a great while until another Con gressional election will be held. If one could be held at this time who can doubt what would be the result ? The people of the United States have been grievously led astray, aDd they are now realiz ing it as never before. This is no time to take the gravest possi ble risks with the revenue of the Government, and it- is surely no time to trifle with the outraged sensibilities of a vc(st number of the American people. Let rea son and justice prevail, before additional burdens are added to those being borne by deluded voters and those dependent upon them, and before the rising tide of ; public condemnation over whelms Grover Cleveland and the party he has led to the brink of destruction. ?Philadelphia Tele graph (Ind). Sept. 9. Free Coal J nd Free Iron Ore. Mr. Carnegie in his interview in the Press this morning hits the mark when he says, "Watch Mr. Wilson's coal and iron schedule'" Will the' gentleman from West Virginia bring in a bill that will, for example, "pulverize" the coal schedule or the iron ore schedule? In other words can West Virginia afford the luxury of free coal and free iron ore ? Can Virginia. Alabama and Tennessee afford it? It the Press is not mistaken, Southern members opposed these reductions in the Mills bill. As a matter of fact, free coal and free iron ore will be even more disastrous to the Southern States than to the West. Euro pean freight rates are nominal, and these industries will be at tacked by the foreign products all along the seacoast The in terior iron mines on the shores of the Great Lakes and the coal industries of the Western States will be the least injured by this foolish policy. Mr. Wilson un doubtedly knows that the de velopment of the coal industry of his own State is one of the most remarkable instances of how a judicious tariff stimulates pro duction. The census of 1880 re turns. we believe, not over, pos sibly less than a million tons of coal as mined in West Virginia. Last year that State mined over ten million ton of coal. Penn sylvania, Ohio and Illinois alone outrank Mr. Wilson's own State in this respect. The Press will be curious to see to what extent the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee will find himself called upon to vindicate the Chicago platform and the Constitution when the momentous question of free coal and free iron ore comes up for decision.?N. Press. Chicago unions have decided to withdraw their funds from safety vaults and have opened bank accounts, thus throwing $500,000 into circulation. A Dlitiniralahed American Bonaptrt*. Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, tte grand nephew of the great Coreian, and the moat famous representative in these later days of the American branch' of the Bonaparte family, died in Bever ly, Mass.. his summer home, September 3. He was born in Baltimore in 1832, his father be ing Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte, son of Jerome, youngest brother of the Emperor, and Elizabeth Patterson, of Baltimore, and his mother being Miss Williams, of Roxbury. He leaves two. children, Jerome Charles, born in 1878 and Louise Eugenie, born in 1873, besides his wife. The well-known Baltimore lawyer. Charles Joseph Bonaparte, is his younger brother. The story of the origin of the American branch of the Bona parte family is one of the ro mances of history. The young est brother of the First Consul was an officer in the French navy when he met Elizabeth Pat terson at a ball in Baltimore in 1803. She was then about seven teen years old. and the daughter of a Baltimore merchant who was born in Ulster, Ireland. It was a genuine love match, and the marriage was duly consum mated. notwithstanding the op position of the paternal Patter son, who foresaw how Napoleon would view it. The young wife was prevented by French frigates from landing in France, and her son was born in England in 1805. Jerome Bonaparte's American marriage was nullified by the Emperor, but the Pope and Ro man Catholic Church always recognized it. and it was after ward decreed by an imperial council of the Second Empire that Elizabeth Patterson and her son had the right to the name of Bonaparte. After the annull ment of his American marriage by the Emperor, Jerome married Catherine. Princess of Wurtem burg, became King of Westphalia and served in the Emperor's army, commanding a division at Waterloo. Elizabeth Patterson died in Baltimore in 1879, and her husband near Paris, in 1860. The elder Jerome Bonaparte cer tainly did not behave handsome ly to his American wife, and it made her misanthropic in her later years.?Springfield Republi can. We believe that Great Britain is shortly to receive an offer from the United States for the pur chase of British Columbia. Cali fornia is the moving State in the business, and backed by tbe Federal Government is prepared to bid $100,000,000 for our Wes tern Province. The fact that the Province is not for sale will not prevent the offer being made and it will then remain to be seen whether the offer is an insult or a compliment. The United States made a good bargain when Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7,000.000.?Halifax Critic.
