It Is now- possible to go somewtat
more into detail regarding the plastic
and color work upon tbe various build
ings of the Pan-American Exposition.
The most advanced of tbe buildings la
that to be devoted to machinery. Tbe
staff upon tbe exterior of this edifice is 1
now nearly all in place, and tbe great
structure is in tbe bunds ot tbe color
artists.
Thought very large building, 500 by
850 feet, tbe four facades are so bro
ken by architectural feature* tbat
there it* nothing of monotony or sever
ity. Every one who has tbe good for
tune to visit tbe grounds during this
sdvaneed stage of development unhes
itatingly applauds tbe happy results of
both tbe architectural and oolor
scheme*.
In oriler tbat tbe reader may have a
correct understanding let me first de
scribe the molded work with wblcb tbe
exterior of the building Is ornamented.
By means of tbe very Ingenious pro
duction known as staff, which is made
out of white plaster, Into which liberal
quantities of uianila liber have been
mixed in order to make It tough and
durable, tbe Exposition buildings are
given tbe appearauce of solidity, and
maHsivenesM as well an tbe beauty of
richly carved stone. But, since tbe
material is uot stone, tbe idea of add
ing color to the work has been suggest
ed. How to apply the color so tbat It
would heighten the l>eauty of the work
ba* taxed tbe Ingenuity of tbe mont
famous mural painter of tbe world,
Mr. Charles Y. Turner of Xew York.
The very Intricate character of the
sta/T work and tbe vast amount of It
In delicate designs offered a most for
bidding taxk. All four of the broad
fncadeM of the building have nn a rend
ed effort. Kvery window is a deeply
recessed arch, with wide soffits and
casIngH. Every entrance is composed of
one or more bigb arches, with massive
pillars at the sides, and every pillar
and pilaster Is of very elaborate detail.
Every window is grilled and finished
with fidelity to the mom artistic ideas
of architects of the Spanish renais
sance, from which the general archi
tectural scheme of the Exposition is
derived.
At the four corners of the great
building are four tower*, with oj?en
pavilions, {HJ feet above tbe grouud.
