PHILOSOPHY WITH A MORAL
C
Eminent financiers and political
ecoi etnlsts socalled have been very
much disturbed of late for fear that
the automobile would prove the
downfall of national prosperity They
i are constantly bemoaning the money
expended In the purchase and run
ning of automobiles but might they
not turn their thoughts to the fact
k that while large sums have been
spent In the doveolpmont of the auto
mobile Industry there are many ex
ceedingly strong points In favor ot
this Industry and Its value to the
country Might they not on the
other hand turn their attention tu
the fact that this country annually
spends about 2500000000 for
strong drink which has not one re
deeming thing in its favor
Are we financially going to the
dogs because we are spending per
chance a few hundred million dol
lars a year on automobiles which
are helping to develop the coun
ty helping to give health to many
sick helping to build good roade
mean advancement In education in
religious activities in business devel
opment in enhanced value of farms
in the better cultivation of land in
lessening the burden of transporta
tion to and from the farm and thus
increasing the prosperity of the farm

means more than material develop
ment it is really a moral issue uo
CaTuso of its great effect upon land
The automobile has those things
in its favor On the other hand
drink which costs tho country ten
d times as much as the automobile
has nothing In its favor It builds
almshouses Jails and penitentiar
ies It Is the chief factor In re
quiring tho maintenance of a great
police force Instead of building up
health as does the outdoor life of the
automobile it destroys health It
destroys life and the cost of strong
drink to the country intend of be
ing two and a half billion expended
t by the consumer Is probably twice
s as much In the aggregate through
the enormous expenditures In the
t building and maintenance of jails
almshouses and penltentarles tho
burden put upon tho land by this
mighty curse
Wo have not however soon any
a agitation on the part of the great
ii rich about any panic coining by rea
son of drink though they are free I
In their predictions of a panic by
reason of tho automobile Is this
due to shallowness of reasoning
which marks many ot the statements
nut out by these socalled author
ities Is It due to lack of knowledge
edge Or Is It due to tho fact that
