We opine it would—wc are clearly cf opinion that sundry persons—"distingue" in their personal appearance—enjoying an excel lent reputation for iArewdness and possessed of this world's goods, would very suddenly find themselves in the custody of the law. But who is so green as not to know that criminal laws are made solely for the poor and friendless All public functionaries understand this—they know who to arrest and who to let run. One man gets drunk and he is carried off to quod in the roughest manner—another does the same thing and a police officer leads him home to the "bo som ol his family," and bids him "good night" iu the blandest manner at the gate! A vulgar rogue offers to sella brass watch and he is ar rested so suddenly as almost to snatch him out of his boots. Had lie money, friends or votesi his traffic in brass watches would be all sound, and he commended ns "smart!" £3^~A number of graceless young scamp?, not having a proper respect for the powers that be, have been propagating very industriously an injurious slander upon Mr. Healy, our present efficient and gentlemanly Capt. of Police. id they bethought themselves of the fate of EM|. Wieder they would undoubtedly have saved themselves the labor of asserting that the Capt. was tight as u brick Wednesday afternoon. The story is this. They say that the Captai.i and officer Smith had the whole character and dignity of the city to support—that they received the military at the water's edge and escorted them to their quarters—that they were engaged all day in showing proper attentions to our visitors—es corting them tn notable places, where the best drinks were to be found, and that before night they (particularly Capt. Healy) were very tight. We now write the foregoing merely to say this is an idle and mischievous slander gotten up to injure the reputation and abridge the use fulness of our efficient police! They were both sober as judges! We are requested to correct a mistake in the Gazette of yesterday, in regard to tlie painting of tile Tlilrii Street Chapel. The paint ing was finished by Mr. Raney, successor of Cunningham & Raney. Mr. Raney has accom plished this job in a masterly manner, nnd is deserving of all praise therefor. Kemarkable Discovery. As we were leaving the office for dinner, yes terday noon, we noticed a shining light in a cor ner ot a stair. Curiosity prompting us to ascer tain the cause of this phenomenon, we stooped, and picked up a thin circular substance, rolor less, about the size of a small pill-box. Our knowledge of chemistry and mineralogy were alike baffled by the mysterious nature of the substance. After vainly endeavoring to come to a satisfactory opinion of its nature, we ex hibited- it to a scientific friend, who informed us that it was genuine solid silver, and was gen erally known by the appel.tion of "dime.''— The truth Hashed upou us, with the hale.on memories of old days, when wc were accustom ed to such sights. As the dime conld not have grown there, it was probably spilled by some unfortunate individual. P. S. The owner can receive the same by proving property, aud paying for this adver tisement. yayCoRBK & SON have just received a large invoice of beautiful wall paper, which is on ex hibition at their paper room. The new block of Mr. John Green, di rectly opposite our office, has been covered, and is now in the hands of the plasterers.— It is a noble structure—durable and handsome and will long stand a monument to the classic taste of its accomplished Architect, Mr. Stover. We are glad to see such improvements, aud are happy to notice that Mr. Green's building will not stand alone in its glory for any length of time, us Messrs. Bassctt & Dunham are erect ing next to it a block for Messrs. 3. S. We noticed several wagons passing the office yesterday, labelled "Kansas," and from their neat and well-to-do appearance, we surmise that some little nook in that Territory will, ere long, be teeming with a rich agricul tural burden. River Items. We are indebted to Dr. Abercrotnbie lor St. Paul, Dubuque and other up river papers of late dates. We cut a few items from the St. Paul Pioneer of Sunday last, Irom which we are inclined to believe We ard yet to have another rise: IN THE WATER.—About fifty Irish shanties in Lower Town are now surrounded with water, in many ol them the water being over the floor. In making an examination of that neighborhood yesterday, we were astonished that there had been no cases of drowning among the childrcK, who are more numerous than convenient in such contracted domicils. Loos.—During the whole of last week, logs have been floating down by St. Paul, at times so thickly as to interfere with the progress of up river boats. We have heard it reported that the Rice Creek boom nnd a boon at St. Amhony had been cut, letting the logs loose and the present high water has also loosened a great many "j.mis," besides making it pretty difficult booming those logs now coining down. TIIESTORM.—For nearly two weeks past, with the exception of a couple ot days, the rain has continued to fall almost incessantly—as last as one shower dwindles out another far more co pious follows in its wake. Never, since the first settlement in this Territory, wc believe, has the sky wore such a sombre anddismal appearance, for so long and uninterrupted a period. The consequence is, the niu i in our siree si-- almost intolerable, pedestrians look glum, and vegeta tion is rather "green." Everybody's culiar is full of water, and everybody wishes the comet gOOil Iiiuii, ti iia intiuonoo i« strong enough to "open the windows oi Heaven" in that sort of a way. We find iu the same paper the following upon that deeply interesting subject the FATE OF THE CAPTIVE WOMEN.—No reliable information, so lar as we can learn, has been received liom the Indians sent out by agent Flandrcau, for the rescue of the two captive women but we are pained to announce, that we have information concerning the women, whom they were sent after, which is apparently reliable and which conveys the appalling intel ligence. that Mrs. Noble had been murdered, and that Miss Gurdiuer had been put up on the side of a hill as a target for the shots of the murderous fiends, the result of which was that both her legs were broken, and she was left in that condition to die. Fortunately, some strollijig Yankton Indians discovered her, and removed her to the Mission Station on Yellow Medicine, where she is now receiving all the care possible and as soon as convenient, will be brought to this city. The information convened above comes thro' E. E. Paulding, Esq., of St. Peter, who returned last Thursday, from atrip to Redwood and who l'eels satisfied in his own milid of its truth. The final act in this tragedy ought soon to close. Tne murderers have done their worst, and there are now no captives with them whose lives would be endangered by hostile demon strations. Let the govi rnnient now act. and let vengeance be speedy nnd terrible upon the out laTs. As they have shown no mercy, let none be showu to them. A BrAuriFL'i. CLASSIC ALLUSION.—Mr. Win throp, of Massachusetts, in his address to the Musical Festival in Boston last week, alludes to the contemplated submarine telegraph, in these words: "On Christmas eve, in the year 1814, the trea ty of peace between England and the U. S. WHS signed at Ghent—a worthy commemoration oi that blessed event when the herald angels were heard singing on the plains of Bethlehem— "Peace on earth, and good will to all men." But that treaty was not known on this side of the ocean for six or seven weeks alter its date. The great battle of New Oileaus, as you all know, was fought at least two weeks after the signing of that treaty. Our modern system of railroads aud steamers and telegraphs might have saved that effusion of fraternal blood—might have de prived individual heroes—might have deprived our country and its history—of till the glory belonging to that really great victory, it that gigantic ocean harp, which is at this moment in the process of being strung—whose deep diapa son is destined to a more magical miLsiu on the sea tliau mythology or modern fable ever ascri bed to syren, mermaid or Ariou—il the myste rious gamut of that profound submarine chord had been in successful operation then, as we hope it soon will be between St. Johns and Valentia Bay those cotton bag ramparts at New Orleans might never have been celebrated in history—while, of those who gallantly defended them, many of them would not bave been laid so low, aud some perhaps would hardly have risen so high." A FALL IN SITGAR.—For the past month, high as sugar was be I ore, it has continued to advance u quarter or half a cent a week, and is still ri sing. But there is reason to hope ior a decline before next Christmas. The crops are promis ing. Production has been largely stimulated by the high prices of two years past. Con sumption has somewhat diminished. Stocks h.ive increased, and the Louisiana crop, which will be iu by October or November, will bu four times greater than last year. The maple pro duction has been enormous, and if the experi ments with the Chinese cane should result In nothing but syrup, the increase of saccharine matter will be large —so that speculators who have bought for a rise will find that sugars must have a fall. Louisiana, maple, and Sor ghum, with a restraint on consumption, will prove too strong a combination for them.—-St. Louis Rep. ryThe Methodist Protestant says the fol lowii. reasons were assigned a few days ago for leaving the Methodist Episcopal Church and joining a more faslronable congregation.
