For the Cliarli'S t'ity Harrest Time. tILA II. Ah, blithesome anl tjny the harvester! come, Slowly winding adown tin- lane. Witli glatl hearts menily driving home The rustling sheaves of golden grain. On many another long gone year I have watched this blithesome harvestscene^ And the light to-day is warm and clear That is Hooding the valley's glittcrin^shecn. Why does it seem lew happy and bright Than on many nnothei harvest day And why do the waves of golden light Break and iliiver and die away All, we Tni»B ft voice In the harvest song- A firm, proud lip and forehead high— The lightest step in the jocund throng— The glance of a Hashing eagle eye. Two years ago, when in and out The swallows flew 'neath the mousy MVU, And home they drove with many a ahNA| The last lipe load of golden sheaves^ When wave on wave of the reapers' liymn Was pulsing upon the summer air, Our hearts grow Kick and our eyes were dim, Ami we murmured many an earnest ptayer For cmillng payly, and llet*tng all, He grusjH'd each sun-burned, honest hand, Proud to know that if he «u» uld fall He should nobly die for his native land. Ab, nie while the mowers toss tlic hay, And the reapeis garner the shining grain, Ify thoughts are wandering far away. Aid my heart is faiut with a dioaryjwInS For far on the crimsoned battle plain, With the bannershiondinK his noble breast, Amid the martyrs of freedom slain, He is peacefully laid to his glorious rest. Iowa—1tts Indncemets to Tfiflrfgfants. Now that tlie war has closcd, tlio currents »)f emigration will, doubtless, set somewhat in new channels and although many persons have believed that it would be substantially South ward, we have not been satisfied that such would be the case, except with a contain class of foreign emigrants and for these reasons The people of the North and of the South arc not yet fully reconciled and will not readily f.rget that they have been fighting each other as enemies for lour years. The people of the North will not care to move into the land of the conquered rebels, until time has al lowed the feelings of animosity to subside. The emigrants of Northern Europe will follow westward ou the parallels of latitude of their own homes, with, perhaps, the exception of certain German .States, who seem in clined to settle in Missouri and Texas. Let us consider the inducements for these and al! industrious immigrants to make Iowa their future homes. In the first place Iowa possesses a cli mate which for physical health and vigor is not surpassed by any West ern State. It is not too cold or too warm the winters areTjf moderate length ,the springs early aud favorable to all agricultural pursuits, the con* tour of soil such that in very wet sea* sons the crops are not drowned out, nor in very dry seasons withered with heat and drouth. While the' laud is not flat like Illinois, it is not hilly like New England, but gently undulate so that heavy rains run off! into ravines and sloughs. In fact, Iowa is the last Western State this side of the liocky Mountains that has a uniformly fertile soil large parts of Nebraska and Kaunas being ster ile sand plains. The Mississippi riv er on the cant and the Missouri oil the West a flu rd complete water high ways to curry «fl* all products of the State to domestic aud foreign markets, and the internal rivers and railroads already afford ample local transporta tion. The great l'acific Railroad tra verses the central portion of tho State| and when completed will turn the l'af cific travel aud freight through our State from every part of the North west. We have also inducements fur la bor which few States possess. Ourl railroads are not completed us in oth er Western States, ss Ohio, Indiana! and Illinois, but only in process of completion, and thousands of laborers are constantly required to carry on these works of iuterual improvement at liberal wages. So that the foreigu emigrant who comes here can find im mediate employment, and good wages, until he can look around, become fa miliar with the State, find out the best locality and then wisely aud pru dently select his future home. Our'sehnols are of the best, and we do not believe there is a State in tUe Union in which tho educational intef* cats receive HO much of the attentiofi of the Legislature ss in Iowa. Noth ing will batisfy our people but the very best syteins. In short, there arc few States pos sessing the combination of advantag es that Iowa has to invite tho emi grant to hasten hither to seek and make a home. \V« hope there will tie a general effort on the part of tlie people of Iowa to present our superior induce Monts to immigrants that we may o •fail) our share of its wealth and power. J*vt each citizen do hi a share of this good work.—Davenport Gazel'e. Labor and Thought. Iti« a no less fatal error to despise labor when regulated by intellect than to value it for its own sake. We are a1wa3Ts in these days trying to sepa rate the two we want one man to be always thinking, aud another to be al* ways working, and we call one a gen tleman and tho other an operative whereas the workman ou^ht always to be thinking, and the thinker should not neglect labor and both should be gentlemen in the best sense. As it i*, we make both ungentle, tl»o one envy iug and the other despising his broth er and the ma*s of society is made tip of the morbid thinkers and miser able workers. Now, it is only by la bor that thought can be made healthy, and it is only by thought that labor can be made happy. The professions should be liberal and there should be less prido felt in peculiarity of em ployment, aud more in excellence of mlHSveoietfft. ty'4it.»iiii»iii It has been proved in Dabaqtic County that a snake can bite, and t*He hard, after its head has been sev •ijcd^from its body. Wo have proof every day that the snake of the rebel lion, after having been punched, pound ed, shot and amputated, has life in it yet to menace the Government with the re-establish went of Slavery, the 'strcciiou of popular hbeity.
