The hail fell for ten minutes, many of the stones being larger than walnuts. Great damage has been done to the or chards, the buckwheat is flattened to the ground, and immense fields of corn completely riddled. A large number of tre-s and Bereral outbuildings were blown down. At Camp Tabor tents were loosened and blown in every di rection. The storm came from the southeast, And passed up into tbe mountains. A The Dee Moines (Iowa) "Register," of Sept. 3, says : The Rev. Mr. Hedrix, of Fairfield, Iowa, has sent ns a oopy ot a letter that Capt. Leslie Bassett, of Keokuk county, this 8tate, a gentleman of high stand ing, who has just been nominated by the Republicans of this oounty for Au ditor, received from Capt. Dixon, of Mississippi, written only eight days before that gentleman was murdered by order of the Democratic party for the crime of being an Independent Democrat. Here is the letter, as we take it from the original. Being published for the first time after Capt. Dixon's death, it comes to the American people as a warning ont of the grave, and an ad monition to them to look well to the ulterior purpose of the Solid South, in whose interest this murder was com mitted, and in the seoret schemes of the Democratic party, by wliese order it was done. "Yazoo City, Ang. 11.—Leslie Bas sett, Esq., Richland, Keokuk County, Iowa: Your favor of Aug. 6 is iu hand. I mail you a oopy of the "Herald," and am grieved to say it is too true; all you have heard through the Northern press of the outrage perpetrated in this ooun ty on July 25. Since that time a per fect reign ot terror haa existed in this county. My associate on the Independ ent tioket for Chanoery Clerk has bean hunted and his house surronnded for aereral nights by armed men, number ing from 50 to 100, demanding his with drawal from the oanvass, but as yet they have been unable to see Mr. J. E. Bell, who is the candidate for Chancery Clerk. There is no Republican ticket in this county. The Independent ticket is composed of Democrats, baton acooant of the colored people supporting the tioket so generally, it has aroused the Bourbon Democrats to snob a high pitoh that they deolare no opposition tiokot shall be put in the field. Every effort is being made to cover up their action on the 25th ultimo. You can not imagine or picture the scene of that mob, and but for onr gallant Mayor, 1. Holt, blood would have been spilled ■nd myself and many friends murder ed. As to the race issue, that is all bosh. The negroes are all quiet, and could not be roused to trms by any one, and were they to attempt such a thing, no one would rally to the protection of the intelligence of the county quicker than myself, and every white person in the oounty knows it. I have said nothing| as yet, but so soon as the time arrives I will be beard from. You will please uot use my name if you publish this, as it may injure me in some way. I in tend to come out with full details so soon as it is prudent. Yours very " H. M. Dixor. " IsMiei. truly. A Halclde'a Hallaclnatlon. Barnhardt Fischer, a New York to bacco dealer, shot and killed himself on Sunday at his home, 22 Henry street, during the absence of his wife. He has been under an hallucination that deadly enemies were pursuing him to rob him. He hid away his money in all sorts of improbable places, and hired a detective to follow him constantly and keep away his enemies. He left a note for his wife and family, bidding them good bye and regretting that his enemies would not let him live any longer. Colonel Polk, late Doorkeeper of the Democratic Home of Representatives, at Washington, is on the war path. He is after Carter Harrison, an ex member, Clarkson N.Potter, and Snnset Cox. He says the reason why he did not keep his soldiers' roll full, was because part of the Democratic members refused to ap point soldiers. He says they refused to appoint, and sneered at the whole mat ter of soldiers' roll. Col. Polk is down on Tildeu, and says he will stump Mis sissippi for Grant; against Sam. Tildeit. Tbe Democrats will convert him into a skimmer with buckshot if he does. Secretary Sherman was asked how he liked Cornell's nomination. "If I were a oitizen of New York," he said, "I would vote for Mr. Cornell, and do all I could to elect him." Ills answer seems to be tbe general sentiment of those op posed to Cornell's nomination. Tbe importance of securing New York to the Republicans the fall before the Presi dential election, will outweigh all per sonal differences in the party, and har monize the heretofore discordant ele ments in an effort that will be sure to win. lnvsstlcatlDB the Sparrow. Kmtobs:— After Sabbath School on Sunday afternoon I with two lady friends went to visit a sick friend living on Orange street. After leaving the ohurch we had to pass a great many men sitting at the different cigar shops and larger beer places, but met with no annoyance until on onr way baok Returning along Fourth street, we no ticed when we got to King street that we mast either pass over on the other side in the hot son, or pass a lot of rough looking men at a livery stable kept between King and French streets, but we concluded to keep on the same side. Ab we passed them we were con scious of ugly remarks being made, and when they found tbat we did not notice them, one of their number gave a low peculiar whistle which ended in a loud guffaw by the whole crowd. Now I want to kuow if such conduct should be tolerated. If the proprietor of tbat es tablishment most keep snob animals around him, why does he not put a halter around their necks, and pat them in stalls out of the way of per sons who must necessarilly pass there. Or if the Mayor could find a policeman who has manliness enough iu bis com position to protect a lady from insult, it would be better to have one to look after suoh places. There is certainly some redress for those who are unable to help themselves. Things are getting to a rather low ebb if a lady canDot walk along the Btreets in the day time without being insulted.
