LIOEE.
A Terrlfle Eacoonter On n Far we
Near Frledenibarc-The Result.
Two stallions, one a four year old,
Gold Hast breed; called "Gold King,"
and a three year old called "Schuylkill
Chief," kept on the farm of Aaron
Maskell, near Friedensborg, were re
cently taken oat of the stable for water
and exercise. "Gold King" behaved
badly, and when "Chief" approached,
his rage knew no bounds. He broke
the bridle by which he was led and
rushed npon "Chief." The man who
had "Chief" in charge dropped the
halter and ran away to a place of safe
ty. The stallions wefe pow both free
and eager for a fight. Hearing on their
hind feet, the horses came together with
terrific force, and the shock made both
recoil on their haunches.
Hostilities were resumed almost in
stantly. and then followed such strik
ing and biting and kicking as was nev
er done before by equinep. The cry of
the infuriated animals could be heard
a mile oil', and as the combatants be
came weaker their rage seemad to iti
crease. Mafkell and Krietzer saw that
it was utterly useless to attempt to
separate the animals without assistance,
so the latter was dispatched for help to
neighboring farms. In less than halt'
an hour nearly fifty men and hoys had
assembled around the ham-yard where
the horses still fought viciously. Vari
ous means of separating them were pro
posed, but as each p'au was trit-d it
proved a failure. In the meantime the
horses fought on without paying the
slightest attention to the excited spec
tator. At last pome one suggested
that two lassos be made and one thrown
ou the neck of each horse.
This was thought to be a good idea,
and it whs acted upon immediately.
After the lassos were made, to oue

ivlaskoll and a man named Glover took
the i aBg08 ftU( j approached the horses.
Glover succeeded in throwing his noose
around Gold King's neck at the first
attempt, but Maskell made three casts
before he got his lasso over "Chief's"
head. A dozen ready hands then
grasped the ropes, and the horses were
drawn apart. They both struggled vio
lently and uttered the most savage
cries; but the tightening of the ropes
soon choked them down and they were
hobbled aud taken into their respec
tive stables.
Both animals were covered with cuts
and bruises, arid Gold King's forelegs
are so badly injured that it is feared ha
will never entirely recover. The Chiefs
injuries although severe, are not likely
to cause permanent injury. Alter be
