The Pittsburg "Evening Telegraph" of last night, contain* an interview with a gentleman, whose name 1 b not given, In regard to faeto connected with the oleotlon of 1876. The Interview eaji that a number of Southern and Weet ern Senators and Representatives were formed into a coalition by friends of Senator Thurman of Ohio during the session of Congress of 1877-78. The object of the coalition was to press Thurman for the nomination for Presi dent in 1880. The interviwed gentle man says a secret meeting of these Thurman men was held iu a hotel in Washington, in the session of Congress in 1877-78. He adds: "I cannot give you the names of thoee present, because know one or two of them only. Gor don, of Georgia, Lamar, of Mississippi, Mavis, of West Virginia, and several other Southern men, six or eight West ern men, and four or'iive from the Last were at the meeting. I think that Hewitt was there, but I am not sure. The result of the meeting was that a committee was appointed to work up a feeling for Thurman. The committee had thirty-eight meinhero, one for each State. Etch member was to effect a secret organisation of Thurman men iu his own State, and work the thing so that Thurman de'egates wonid lie sent to the Mational Convention if possible. The Committee bad several meetings and got its work well under way My understanding of the matter was that Hewitt was to work for Thurman in New York against Tllden. Whether tnis was true or not, 1 know that Hew itt, either after or at the lirst meeting, told the Thurman people why he had quarrelled with tilden. He said that Tildeu gave him charge of his cam paign, and told him to spend whatever Hewitt went to money was necessary, work with a will aud 8p«nt over $200, 000 of his own money, thinking that i« would be repaid by Tilden even though he was not elected. When Hayes went in and the time came for settling the bills Tildeu refused to pay Hewitt's ex penditures, saying that he ought to be paid by*assessments on the party. Til den agreed to pay his share of an as sessment, hut said Hewitt had spelt too much money. Tilden at length paid about $20 000, and $30,000 or $40,000 was rais'd by subscription. Hewitt's trsoual loss was from $100,000 to $120,000. Hewitt said that Tildeu had agreed to back him iu whatever he did, and that he knew how much money was being speut from time to time, and hence Hewitt had no fear at the time of his being mulcted so badly. This story of Hewitt was told around by the Thurman people as au explanation of Hewitt's support of the Ohio Senator Whether the Thurman organization is yet in existence I can't say." t I The X onus Man —Bo. S. You have been thinking, have you ? Then you are serious. No man, young or old, can think steadily for oue hour ou a grave subject without becoming serious. The lunger he continues in that mood the butter fur him. A life of usefulness, a career of success, of happiuess and glory may be wrapped up in that one hour of serious thought, the Uower aud tho fruit are wrapped up, iu the bud. The fault of many is that they do not make the most of a serious mood. It is a time when the soul plumes it self for a loftier llight You have been thinking on your ways. What arc they ? How far have you gone, young man, in your particular way t Do you see the end of it f A great Father en treated his children to seek after know l ledge and discretion. Uas your medi tation brought you to the point to re solve to make that knowledge aud dis cretion your chief pursuit? If so, you have thought well, aud something will come of H. The shortest iiue between two given points is a straight line. There is such a line for you, yonng mau, stretching from tho cradle to the grave. From it yon cannot turu to the right hand or tbe left. You must measure every inch of that line. This ie the way yon must travel, and because it is the journey of your mor tal life, it may be called your way. There is lo escape from it,your natural life will measu months, days, &c., uutii it ends, muc h of your earthly existence have you measured off ? If you are now twenty and live to be fifty years old, two-Qfths of your way lie behind you; but if you die at thirty two thirds of your life are already gone. The shortness of life makes it ft solemn thing to live; the trials of life make it a fearful thing to die. If you have medi tated seriously these thoughts have^al ready forced their way to your mind. If you have not considered them at tentively, they remain true, neverthe less. .Strip life of its romance and poetry, and think of it as everything real, not ideal; as something that has sternness in its requirements, peril in its progress and tremendous conse quences in its performaimes.
