In the au.wer to the oomplaint it is averred that at the times speoiiisd Mrs. Sprague was the wife of William Spra gue, aud that the agreement with Linck made iu her capacity as a married womau and contracted witli her in that capacity, and she asks, therefore, that the complaint lie dismissed. he 'Vita flail Robberle* lu Richmond. A upt-cial despatch from Richmond, Va , nay?*: Extraordinary losses have occurred in the Post-office during the past three mouths, Special Agent Hen derson was sent here, and this morn ing succeeded in putting his hands on the guilty mau—.!. Gordon Baugh, a colored letter-carrier. lie was caught by m^ans of a decoy letter. Four other men who had been arrested were dis charged. Baugh is a leader in colored circles here. Some time ag® he enter tained Prof. Langston, and ex-Congress man Rainey, of SSouth Carolina, is at his bouse now. He has one of the finest libraries in the city, a residence splendidly fur nished, including a telephone and all modern conveniences, and, when taken in charge, had on a superb suit of clothes. He made a full confession. He bad of late been assisting in the distribution of letters to other carriers, and thus got access to the whole mail. The receut losses number about .350, in amounts ranging irom 25 cents to $25, chiefly letters to newspapers. Mr. Hen derson believes that Baugh was the author of all of the recent robberies, but he admits only two. His style of living, so inconsistent with his salary of $800, apparently gives his words the is . to Iu no lie. Onr I'obInI Nervier. . The annual report of the Postmaster GHiinriil for tin- year eiidiDg June 30, 1879, has just been issued. The total expenditures for this department dur ing the year were $30,041,982.80. The States returning revenues in excess of one million dollars were New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Missouri and Michigan. The to tal amount of postage collected during J< #5 the year ou postage stamps, stamped envelopes and postal cards was $2!*, 538,950.93, and the amount collected newspapers aud perodicals mailed to subscribers from known offices of publication wan $1,104,184.07 on 125,500 pounds of matter. The fact that but one line of steamships carry ing our flag is employed in conveying the United States mails across the At lantic, is humiliating to the pride of every American citizen. This line makes regular weekly trip* from Phil adelphia to Liverpool, but the great t u :k of our mails for Europe is carried by steamers under foreign flags. on 51 , K »d or ('tirlHlIuuily. The VVanlen of the State Prison at Bangor, Me., recently related the fol lowing story. A young woman who served out a sentence of five years found means of education, aud beootniug thoroughly reformed and a ChristiAu, left the prison in appearance a lady. She was employed by a dry goods firm in Portland as saleswoman, aud gave perfect satisfaction to her employers, till one day a wealthy lady of the place HUtered the store and reoognixed her Calling the proprietor aside, she told him that the girl had been in the State Prison. He replied that he knew it, hut that she had dime her duty faithfully aud that they were well satisfied with her. "Well." said the lady, "if you keep ber in your store I will neither trade with you myself nor Buffer any of my friends to, if I c*:. help it." 80 the proprietor, rathei than lose his oustomer, called In the poor girl and discharge.! her. Attempted KoMxery. Some rogues attempted to break into the store of Thomas Dalton, at Cent, e ville, Christiana Hundred, an Monday night, and succeeded in forcing open one of the back shutters, when Mr. D. hear ing a noise got up and the rogueb heat a hasty retreat. Yon h*T* meditated over and thought on your particular way. Wh*t hava you seen t That It load* to something beyond. If yon hare not aeon this you must go aud meditate again; do not let It alarm you. People do get alarmed at their own thoughts sometimes and they try to banish oertain thoughts from their minds as troublesome intru ders. They should not be banished but welcomed as friends, for I tell you there Is salvation in thought if you will carry It far enough, Go by yourself lor another brief hour, and listen to a still small voice that whispers in your heart. Doss it not tell yon that be yond death there 1 b another life ? Yon may call it an Instinct or an iutuitiou or a superstition, or a divine monition; hut yon kuow the voice is there. lias it not a correlate beyoui the grave f You feel, you kuow, that death does not end all. There is existence beyond; it is this that gives to death that appall ing title King of Terrors. Something whispers Iti your heart that beyond the clutches of that ghost ly monarchs, there will be the oon of a state of things tliat may well be dreaded,—else why do you Bliudder at the thought of dying ? it you are going to live hereafter, you must make straight paths for your feet while you are living here, the shortest line from the cradle to the grave—your coarse of life, your conduct in this world, needs to he cleansed. The good man ijueted in No. 1, asked, "wherewithal" meaning how, by what means, "shall a young mau cleanse his wayf" This implies that your course of life needs to lie cleared of certain things that aie lu it—oertain things that are unclean. A cleansing implies delilemeut. Five hundred copies will be prepared lor the Associated Press to mail to newspapers, to be published Mpnday simultaneously with its deliv ery to Congress. The message will bo about us long as that of last year. The most serious question which haa been under consideration by the ad ministration, in connection with the President's mfsaage and Secretary Sher man's report, is as to the retirement of legal-tender notes. It is generally un derstood that the President will recom mend their retirement* although its de termination may bo changed before Congress assembles next Monday. An official very u^ar him said that he and Secretary Sherman would make the recommendation, but a Cabinet of ficer gave it as his opinion that noth ing would be said about the subject. Whatever may be the final decision there is no doubt that the administra tion will bring a pressure to bear on Con gress to provide lor the retirement of greenbacks and the really interesting question is, how shall this be effected ? The best way, in the view of the Treas ury officials, is simply to repeat what the Fort bill, which pro vides for the reissue of greenbacks af ter they have been retired. Treasure! (Jillilliu says that had the Fort bill been out of the way during the past, year at least twenty millions of green backs would have been retired. This question is daily becoming more impor tant owing to the rapid increase of the circulation of the national bank notes, which is now growing at the rate of three millions per annum. Almost every black man on tho west side of the river, who staid at home, hai cottou enough to pay all his debts and have a good sum of money left. In the best Ideal ities they count on a halo and a quar ter per acre, which is about equal to 40 bushels of wheat psi acre in the North. Iu many localities, cotton-pickers now get from 75 cents to $L per 100, aud good hands can average 250 pounds, while some women can pick 400. A number of colored politicians and leaders who were talked witli agree that thero is a vast improvement in the Mississippi Valley; that buil-dozing has stopped, and that until it is re sumed there will he no more emigra tion. The whites, they say, now de pend upon ballot-stuffing and political tricks to accomplish their objects, and they find these methods more effective and less expensive than shot guns. of of , Don't Marry a Mum IVIio Drink*. She was to marry him at the house of a friend of her mother, with whom Bhe was staying. During the time she was making up her wedding outfit, lie came to see her one evening when he was justdruuk enough to he foolish. She was shocked and pained beyond meas ure. She then learned for the first time that he was in the habit of drink ing, frequently to excess. She imme diately stopped her preparations, and told him she could not marry him. He protested she would drive him to dis traction, aud that he would never drink another drop. No,' she said: I dare not trust my happiness to a mau who haa formed such a habit.
