It la only with a deep feeling cf sur row and regret that I have to touch up on the funeral of the young wife of Mr. Ilochkeppel, who alone can fnlly real ize the pad Iona. A* atated elsewhere it was al*out the largest funeral that ever took place iu this city. Let it he tru - now, that many thousands of good friends gathered to cast their last look at the mortal remains of her whom they so highly loved ami esteemed iu life, yet it is also a fact that many eueiuies approached, not from holy reverence for the deceased, but more from curiosi ty and mockery, who behaved them selves by word ami deed not as human beings but simply as auiui&ls, without any leeliug aud religion, who considered the cemetery rather a circus than a con secrated grave-yard. In whom has it been instilled more powerfully than in a Roman Catholic, to follow the funeral procession with holy reverence and to enter the burial ground with a pious fear. Is it possi ble that they lost all moral feeling at once, if they had any at all ? A person must be utterly degraded who commits a nuisance oh sucb*a sol emn occas'oij, where even a heathen or a Totk will show some human fueling. And what expressions did those few gopalppers, whose names are knot, n, make use oi f An honest, modest aud pious woman would shudder to hear them. And why all this shameful and disgraceful behavior f Has any one wronged them in anything? Why were even the nearest relations afraid or ashamed to bid the last farewell to the noble dead ? Were all of them exposed ty eternal damnation when Mr. Hocbkeppel mar ried ? ya hypocrib*, take esre of yoi r own souls and families. Aud why be boldest thou the mote in thy broth* r s eye ? thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. (St. Matt. VII. 3 and b. Let everybody be satisfied with his own misfortunes, for the baud of the Lord rests heavy upon us all. Mr. H. is a man of good character and^educa tion and as in the beginning has again at this occasion defied all Lis enemies by following the coffin fearlessly through the dense mass. He faith fully and closely clung to her whom lie truely loyed, even to the grave, and every true Christian should be moved to tears in seeiug the young man, be fore whose eyes all earthly hopes were sunk for ever in the grave. A newspaper representa tive visited the family and obtained the fads relating to the trouble. It appears that ou the 24th of November Mrs. Zimmerman bought a slaughtered hog from a wholesale produce firm and 4aking it home used a portion of it. to gether with beef and other ingredients, iu the making of a Herman pudding. The pudding was eaten raw by them all, Mrs. Zimmerman partaking of it upon numerous occasions. Nine days afterwards all were seiz. d with a strange and wretched feeling, slid the wife, aud &s all were similarly affected, they were greatly alarmed. They ex perienced a burning and unquecchahis thirst, were racked witli excruciating pains in the limbs, found it .impossible to sleep, although experiencing a sense of drowsiness constantly, and were restless and feverish. The wife swelled as though she was suflering from dropsy, aud her flesh became hard aud solid. There seems to be fortnnately, but little doubt that the Maine fraud will be carried into effeot unless some legal inland are fjeud to prevent Its consu m at ion. It involves the disfranchise ment of seven co«nties, of the largest city iu the State and of the State Capi tal. The alleged irregularities are too slight to disguise the naked intent of fraud; or to have any weight before a tribunal lost to all self-respect. It is intimated that the object in thus organizing a defeated legislature in op position to the will of the people, reaches further than to the electiou of a Governor aud ti.a division of State patronage. It will insure such a Re publican majority in Maine next year as will out short the banquet of the spoiled at their own home table. Rut if the first act of the bogus Legislature aud the usurping Gov«rnor should be to take the choice of Presidential elec tors into their own polluted hands, the Democratic column for 1480 would he that much the stronger aad a Demo cratic administration won Id find its first duty aud pleasure in taking care of the men who had defrauded the peo ple of their own State. If such an act is done in Maine it will be only natural for the Republi cans to retaliate by doing the same thing in New York. They hare the advantage of a Governor and a Legisla ture elected by the people and Dot by fraud, while New York has thirty five electoral votes at slake and Maine has only seven. This is the one consid eration which may prevent the zeal of the Eastern Democrats from running quite away with them. They would gain saven votes and lose thirty-five, while everybody would say th*y were rightly served. Nenntor llojard. Vur the llopuhllcan. llKssiti. Eoitorx : Tha Philadelphia "Record" of Thursday last, maxes a great flourish of trumpets over Henator Bayard, and states that if any one wilt produce the commission ol Thomas I\ Bayard as having served in the Confed erate army, they will give l.OOOdollars for tile same. We here iu VFilraington do net ex pect to make application for the money, for we all know of his wberabunts at the time. No Wilmingtonian ever cir culated such a report. We know better. We will say to the 'Record' that bun combe is cheap ; hut we ol Wilmington do know that on the 4th of July, 1861, Thomas K. Bayard, acting as captain of a volunteer company, paraded our streets, aud not one of the company was known to he in favor of the Union of the States, and moreover, tho said company was disarmed by order of the Oovernmeut, as dangerous to the inter cats of Delaware, and of the Union. Try again. Yotirs, eto. ges X. The New l enen*. It id a serious outlook for the new Census that it is to he made political and sectional. If the enumerators in the Soutli are to be, as now appears likely, dictated entirely by Hie Sena tors from that section, they will lie charged, beyond a doubt, to make such returns as will prevent the Southern States from sustaining the whole of the political loss which their slow growth of population should entail. The whole roheme of haring the supervisors sub ieot to confirmation by the Senate was, from the very passage of tin Census aot, a scheme to put them under the control of tlie Democratic Senators, and make a Census which would serve the sectional objects of their party.
