Romn Boon. W lliulngton, Jan'y *.i860. Tl»« Presldeory. The Washington corres) onden* of the North American, after referring to Til den's chance for getting the nomination of the Democrats for the Presidency, speaks of Senator Bayard as follows: Then we come to Bayard, unmistake ably the choice of the voters bat not of the leaders, lu the east, the Delaware statesman is admitedly strong. John Kelly is said to be for him, Senator Wallace is for him. All the anti Wal lace people, speaking of Pennsylvania, are against him. Tildeu is against him. However lit to adorn the Presidential chair, Senator Bayard will never have the luck to step iuto that chair. The reasons for this bold assertion are nu merous. The first and most powerful is, the machine is against him. A strenuous opposition to his success has already been begun. He can never conciliate the soft-money wing of his party, and it is that wing that is being used large ly by the bauds that are ready to be his execut.ouer. It is with delight that they behold him destroying his chances with his own baud. On the financial A N. er he an question Bayard is a ''hard-shell Bap tilt"—the boldest aud most advanced advocate of hard money in his party, it is by reason of this that be is openly charged with being a tool of Wall street. His persistence in advocating his finan cial resolution in the Senate, wheu the party leaders deprecate auy opening of the financial question at this session, has lost him influential friends. The notice that he has given, that he means to get off a hard money speech in the Senate at an ea»dy day, is view ed with alarm by bis iteratest champ ions, and he has been asked for his own good to let the speech remaiu un said. 1 am sorry to say that another heinous sin is laid at his door. His fidelity to his party is questioned, lu regard to this, the Congressional Re cord is even against him. It oauuot he denied that he has voted with the Republicans in the Senate on every important measure, save tttate rights, ior the past five years. It was through his exertions that the Republicans ate permitted to retain the most lucrative subordinate places in or about the Senate. Disappointed party managers say that he has allowed the Republicans to keep their offices, worth $84 000 per aunuu, while the aggregate saalries of those filled by the Democrats is hut $54,000. Now this is a crime for which iu the Democratic party there is no pardon. Then his share iu the incubation of the Electoral Commission will also be remembered against him till his dying day. His family is pointed to as being the most aristocratic aud pretentious iu the country. Western and southern Democrats make no bones of saying that between such a oandidate aud Grant they will have no choice, and in that con tin en cy they will not vote at all. However strong he may be with the pen le, as 1 have said, there is op-u revolt among the leaders At his candidacy. His nomination is impossible, therefore, from the fact that he can't take suffi oient strength iuto the convention to nominate nim on the first ballot. He can't make a combination with the Til den m *», or witii the soft-money dele gates ofthe west and portions of the south. Therefor he is I st. From the Kallglo-Plilloeophlcal Journal: I do not quite like the heading of your editorial In the "Journal" jmt received (December 6th) concerning "Speed of Ioe-boat*—Solence Contra dloted by Fact*." True science never contradict, fact*, but explains them.— Thoughtless or'oarelees professors of ■olence, it would appear, often make fool lib blunders ax they hare in this It i* real Jolly to get «uch a case. twist on the professors as this has giv en you. Right richly have they deser ved it, with their high handed a priori reasoning, and pedantio assumption that nothing can he trne which they can not understand and explain—that there are no laws of nature bat those in which they are posted. Seienoe is fully competent to admit aud expound the fact that wind may communicate to an ice-yacht a velocity superior to the wind itself, and I am astonished that Prof. Loomis of Vale, aud Pres. liaruard of Columbia, should have been so careless as to commit themselves without examining the full bearing of the question. Tell them a oitizen of Delaware, a mere amateur in science, can readily convict them of er ror, aud show as well popularly as sci eutiflcally that the fact in question is both probable and certain. To come at the professors and others popularly, we will ask, did they ever when boys, shoot a melon seed, a cher ry stone, or any other slippery seed by pressure between the thumb and fin ger f Did they ever explain*soientific ally how the comparatively slow hard pressure of the muscles was resolved into the rapid motion of the* mucous missile ? If so,they can readily discov er how the ice-yacht is shot forward h) being caught between the pressure o the wind on the one side and the solid keel-holt of the yacht upon thealippery ioe on the other. To illustrate more perfectly I would say, take a wedge of wood or any smooth rigid material and lay it flat upon a hard polished table or other smooth surface. Let it be, say, twelve inches long aud three inches thick, tapering to an edge. Next apply a rigid and steady perpendicular press ure downward near the base or thick end of the wedge. The effect will be (if the surfaces are sufficiently smooth or lubricated) that the wedge will he forced forward in the direction of its thick end, and will travel its whole length (twelve inches) while the per pendicularly pressing body descends three inches. That is, the pressiug body will have communicated to the movable wedge a velocity four (4) times as great as its Now, iu the ice-yacht the keel, or rudder holding it to the ice, forms on* inclined side of the wedge, and tin sail (not quite " flat aft") forms t >t other, while the pressing body is in wind. 2 n. Should the yacht he placed with the wind exactly a beam (that is at right angle to the keel) with the sail hauled aft, hut slightly to lee-ward, (say three feet in twelve feet length ol yard) we will have the same proportions as above stated in the wedge, and a ten mile wind will tend to propel the yacht for ty miles per hour. Proper allowances for friction and the yieluiug instead of rigid nature of the wind and the sai , will doubtless great ly lessen this theoretical speed. ''Quad Krat Demonstrandum." P. S. We would iuoliue to believe that a wall constructed sailing vessel on a smooth sea might, under favorable circumstances, be made to illustrate the same seemiug paradox. by 1st 1 A Joke that did net Turn ont well. John McCue, a plumber living in N. Y., went homo on TucHday, in rath er boisterous spirits, the reflult of tak iug too much strong drink. He eat <lowu to his dinner and picking up a sharp carving knife prepared to make Hack on a joint of meat; then in tending to scare his mother and sister, he sa d suddenly: "Mother, gee; here is the way that some fellows commit suicide." With this remark John McCue drew the knife rapidly across his throat, im agining that the back or blunt edge of the knife was next his throat. The wi men were horrified to see the blood gush forth, and believing that be had killed himself, th« sister fell fainting to the floor, and the old mother ran out on the street shouting for help. John McCue himself became very much frightened, believing that lie bad actu ally inflicted a fatal wound. Ue threw down the knife and strove hard to staunch the flowing blood, at the same time crying like a baby. The police were soon in the house, and the wound was tied up and John McCue taken to the St. Vincent's hospital, where he now lies. As soon as bis wound was dressnd he explained that he had no iuteution of committing suicide, and that he only drew the knife across his throat in a j >ke, believing that he had the blunt edge of it toward bis flesh. an Th.
