The following are Hie figures: Total for la*t three weeks. - 101 250 5,750 - 5.050 Bfttnrd»y, May l Monday, 3, - Tlious to am Ab«ni (lie ScJi«>o! Boiril. The resaUs which have attended the If there was any possibility by the pre sent plan of divesting the election of its partisan aspect, then there would be som8 good reason for preferring it ; but it must bo patent to the most casual observer that year after year the elec tions are growing more partisan, and hence the Hoard of Education is losing caste and character. The. latter is no . mors now what it has be: a in the past, and even teachers an 1 pupils of the publio. chools are ; ed to look upon it «( a neceesary evil which they have to endure, anrl submit to. When the re turns of the election were ail is on Sat urday night, and it was known v ho were elected, some of the svtuces.-ful eandid&us elected by the largest ma jorities evidently looked upon the whole thing as a miserable farce, and ( ene of ibeai present suggested the pro priety of holding the election for mem bers of the Board at the election for eity officers, so that there should be a more general vote cast, and more inter est t:ken at the election. This propo sition received the assent of those who j were present, who alto felt, that the elections fer members of tho Board bad degenerated, and that it was nc longer any very great honor to ba a mem ber of the Board of Public Education. : We fee! rather inclined to favor the suggestion for various reasons, though we admit that it would make the elec tion a straight out party affair the same as the election of members of the City Council. This would do away with any sudden surprises by some aspirants for election to the Board, who are totally unfit for the office, and though it would result in the election of a straight out Republican or straight out Democrat, as the case may be, there oould scarce ly fail to be a moral 'and intellectual fitness for the office, which often seems to be totally disregarded. It is doubt it to to now that ever ty and ty who to be totally disregarded. It is doubt ful, however, if the n suit would have been materially changed at the election if a parly contest had been urged, ex cept in the Third, Fourth and Ninth Wards. The sudden b; ringing cf a Democratic candidate in opposition to Mr. Kent, of course was the cause of that gentleman's defeat, whioh had it been known would have been met in time to have saved Mr. Kent from de feat, as quite a number of the best class of Dem; orats voted for him. We have nothing at all to say against Mr. Fue kel. He may possess an excellent moral character and be well quali fied for the position to which he has been elected, for aught we know, but the fact cannot be concealed that the election degenerated into a regular party skiimish, and the Democrats when they got their blood np went at It with a vim, as if just for the fun of the thing, in order to beat Mr. Kent because he happened to be a Republican. None doubted the ability and character of the latter, and indeed citizens of the Ward without distino the old the 297 his net who been dians West ity Civil for no fr.su keep tion cf party considered themselves well and ably served in th* Board by Mr. Kent. Had Mr. Fnekle possessed no qualifications whatever for a member of the Board he wonld in all probability have been eleoted as easily. He was a Democrat and that was enough for him. Had the election in that Ward been held at the city election and Mes srs. Kent and Fuekle been put in nomination as the regular Republican and Democratic candidates, there oould have been no doubt (f the return of Mr. Kent to the Board. In tLe Fourth Ward there wisno par ty contest it is true, for both Mr. Morrow and Mr. Brady wire not only Democrats hut are Democratic office holders enjoy ing the positions and emoluments of office at the hards of the. Democratic parly. We m-rely tion in the Fourth Ward to show how easy it is to spring a surprise under the present plan which could not be done if the election was held in conjunction nention the eleo with the city election. Everybody seem ed perfectly satisfied with Mr. Morrow \f member of the Hoard and especial / were tbe Republicans so well sai l fied that they refused to favor tho pro posed eantf.idacy of Mr Griffin in oppo sition. But there was little interest ta ken in the election and as there was no known opposition amongst the friends •f Mr. Mo; gate ed eleot ow to his return to the Board, very fsv? lot (ho trouble to at tend the eiection—indeed Mr. Morrow himsoif not aware that he had opposition until about the time the polls closed. But it seems that there were some young bloods in the ward who wanted a little fun and whose any tive will May Democracy was of such a vinv, unadul terated character that they revolted against Mr. Morrow's liberal policy and elected Mr. Brady, not that ihe latter suited them better but that he answer el the pc rose of a scourge for Mr. Morrow. We have nothing in the world tisar against Mr. Brady, indeed we a a not sure but that in some respects he might have been an improvement, but had be been anybody clce without either ab'lity or character the result would have been the sums. The idea was to beat Mr. Morrow no matter by whom and to do it without his know lolge until it wrs too late. This the nt plan «f holding school elections enabled them to do and which oould not have been dono at a city election. In the Kinth Ward we have the Third Ward repeated, except that Con stable Brooks bad been known for some days previous as a Democratic camli date in opposition to Mr. Grubb. But is here as elsewhere there was the same lack of interest, many of the leading citizens i'teliug so suie that Mr. Grubb would l e elected that they showed their faith by their works and remained away iroai the election, allowing Mr. Brooks 11 be eieo'ei by two majority. This could 10 . have oecurred at t) e T it Hie 250 pr citv election, Vecause tbeYe would have , . * * *i _n > been a better turnout at the poll.', ml tha vet* th^t Vr Grubb would ana iLu uu icai »r. urnoo wouio have receive J from leading Democrats oa recount o: his superior iituess for the office would have secured his ele c. Wa only mention these instances tiem. to show how easy it ii to get up a little combination against any candidate u§ matter what hie qualifications for the office night be, which will imnre his defeat, and which could not be so easily done at the regular oity election. We have all along deprecated partisan ship in the school electicra, but it seems that while Republicans are doing this tie Democracy take ed vantage of it and fill the Board with Democrats, and while wo still are opposed to it necessity may in the future compel ua to ab&ndin that position. ot by K.{ircN«r.la(ton Acv»r<il»c to Pol nlatiou. bad mem the elec City any for out ex a to of it in de he we be for a t j ^ the The " Gazette" make3 an effort to create diaecns'on in t'ue Republican party by insidious!}- alludiii.e; to the representation ass'gned to the different counties in Ihe Republican Stale Con. vention. It has pretended at •i.ff'rent times to favor representation accerdint: to population, Int its professions are now shown to ba a mere mockery. The friends of that movement can now see that it is realy to betray them when ever opportunity may offer. This coun ty will always bo subservient to Kent and Sussex unless the Denio.ratic ptr ty can be defeated. The Democrats who wish to obtain representation ac cording to population, must join the Republicans in order to gtt it. The Republicans have feught that battle in ty, the of the ters the tho riod l < r the their organization, bat the Democrats dare not make similar demand for that which is their due. As they dare not do it in their party organization they will nev do it in the legislature The rotten old borough syEtem will con sequent!}' be perpetuated as long as the Democrats control the Legislate;*, and we say agaiu that the only way to se cure tLis measure of justice is to eieot Republicans and give them for a lime tlie control of the legislation of the State.
