Our press rooms are open to everybody. I ll l aUDAY AKIIAT 2, Ikkil. I WHittt'iiaker. John Wanamaker knows what he is about when be advertises. It is said tlia' during last year bis business amounted which one mill! profo. Out of this sum he spent two bundled thousand dollars for advertin' over ten million dollars, of at least was clear ing, which amount though immense was not as large as he spent years ago before his business was so well estab hen he was not s d lislied a known as he is now. The family in this great nation that has not heard of •John Wanamaker must indeed live in a lodge in some vast wilderness impel trable to the tread of civilization and shutout from the printing press and new spapers. Mr. Wanamaker is a true typ* of what every America mar. should he, hut every businessman cannot be a John Wanamaker. They lack just some particular trait of character, some disposition, something that none seemed to possess but John Wanamaker He early in life appre ciated the benefits of advertising and away back twenty-live and thirty years ago, when this great age of advertising was but iti its infancy, Wanamaker & Brown's advertisement was even then more conspicuous than any others that attracted notice iu the public iw.vspa pers of the day, and on sign boards, board fences, barns and trees through out tbe country. He early found out the advantages of advertising largely, and he has unremittingly kept ahead of all competitors in that line ever since. How often, we cannot tell, have we beard the prediction that Wanamaker would fail in business, because he threw away so much money in advertising. He couldn't stand such a contitiuou H drain upon liis profits in business and be successful. Some have even gone so far as to say that he was demented and was an advertising monomaniac that ought to be put in straight jackets ; that lie Lad to cheat the people to pay his advertising bills, that his goods were inferior iu grade, and higher in price, that, in short those who dealt largely with Wanamaker would get their tinkers burnt. It, need not he told that, all pre. di tiuns and warnings were buttlieout croppings of jealousy. While others were grumbling and grow ling at Wana maker because he spent so much money for advertising and compelled others to spend more iu the same direction he pursued the even tenor of bis way in a "shoo fly" independent manner. Hv n larging his business, Hv n larging his business, vas spreading the fame of his establishment far and wide by advancing extra tlions* ands of dollars in advertising and from which lie was reaping a rich He is not crazy, not even slightly de. mented, but iu his daily bulletins to the public lie speaks the words of candor* soberness and truth. Others have the and eward. learned to advertise more liberally tlieir busi less but the success of Wanamaker lias taught them how to do it, yes, and oil, compelled them to do it. Instead of on being a crazy man, not knowing how to A*, his take care of his business and his money, I be k tiuw: ictly what lie is doing and putH his money where it does ljiui the mcht good, instead of imposing upon ' the public and dealing in inferior goods, he invites the closest scrutiny and his goods are proven to he the best the manufacturers can turnout He sta ds high iu social ivies, leads ii religious and Sunday school the nomination of Congressman at large in Pennsylvania who him. It. inters that tio matter where the Democratic with the Convention meets the man ladder on his back and who crept, in window' and captured the lor Governor through Worcester nomination or Massachusetts, is the most to be feared. Tbe Convention might be held Indianapolis without any tear of McDonald, or being captured by Mr. I lend licks ; or in Cincinnati, without being carried off by .Judge Hoadly, Ex-Senator Pendleton Senator or • it might be held in Chi" Thurman ; cago without being kidnapped by .John M. He was no*, elected that year, but the next time he wanted the nomina tion the party handed it over t » him without a word, and he is now Dover, nor of Massachusetts. There is no doubt whatever that this man is a candidate for the Democratic nomina tion for the Presidency and though he may not he saying much about it now, he keeps the ladder handy and if the National Democratic Committee wants to hold a convention unmolested by him they had better guard every ap proach U) the hall several clays before the convention meets.
