COMNEK THIRD AND KINO STREETS nUITERED AT THE POST OFFICE AT Jjj Wilmington, DsL, as seooad class mall The circulation of the Re vublican is steadily climbing to seven thousand daily, r press rooms are open to everybody. THURSDAY AUGUST », IMS. Mrikes wad their Remedy. The telegraph strike i* apparently uo hearer a Holution than when it began three weeks ago. One thing, however, ia evident, the longer the strike con* tlnnee, the less possibility is there for a compromifte with the strikers. Tele, graphing i* not such at) Intricate aud mysterious business that it cannot lie learned in a very short time by an or* dlnarily intelligent, young man or woman, and there are number* of them in the country who are anxiou* to take the place of the Htrikers at the old wages* The telegrapher's lot is no doubt a hard one. They are not regulated by hours of labor like other tradesmen, and have no hour they can call specially their own. But when they accepted the posi tion they hold, they did ho with a full knowledge of what they had to do aud of the requirements of their portions. Their labors have not as a general thing been increased nor their wages ae. creased. Besides this, being in posse* sion of important positiouH and hold* ing the keys to much oflfche business of. the couutry with the power to block and disarrange trade and commerce, by striking they have forfeited the sympa thy of their employers and the general business communities. Still the sym* pathies of the large majority of the peo ple are with the strikers who sincerely ^hpe they will succeed. Nobodydenle« their right to strike, for higher wages and less hours of labor, but after all the question will be regulated by the demand and supply for that, kind of labor ae for every other kind. We do not wish to be understood as being op posed to the right, of laborers of any description to strike. They have a per fect right to strike and indeed it is tliP only iring left them to do in order to enable them to preserve their self-re ■pect and indepeudence when great cor porations with uo souls in thorn bear down upon them and demand the pound flesh as well as tho ounce of blood. Various means have been devised by which capital .and labor can work har moniously together, but the plans Lav*; too much friction and lose their go**! effect. Capital properly invested bring* six per cent, profit, but modern capital, lets are not satisfied without they making fifty and one hundred per cent Labor must put up with a mere scanty 1 pittance, that ekes out a miserable ex istence. The mar. who gets control of capital invests it f >>r his owu benefit, making the most out of it be possibly can. Hundreds an 1 thousands of men are kept down to the grindstone of pov erty aud hard labor that a few may be come millionaires. It will now be but an easy act to perform, for the son* to appoint their fathers, uncles, and their cousins deputies for which there seem h to be no prohibtion in the Edmunds bill. There really seems to have been no contest worth speaking of, for the Gentile population has merely maintained an organization in the face of the tremendous odds. The registry footed up when completed 1H,772 males and 14,4m females, a total of XI,* t, for be it remembered that women vote in Utah. Of this uutuber 'JUG of voter* the Mormons expect to con trol at least 2.1,U00, still retaining a lead of 7,000 majority under the most adverse circumstances. Thus the Gov ernment has failed in its first attempt to settle the Mormon question, ami the question still remains what is to be. done with them ? llaviug complied with all the requisitions of Congress, Utah will come uo doubt knocking at the doors of Congress next session for admission as a State ami with a fair show of being admitted so far as the House cf Representatives is concerned, for the past record rtf the Democrats in (kmgress has not been lacking in sympathy with the Saints and it is just jiossible that Utah with all her sin* will be railroaded in to offset the new Republican State of Dakota.
