The circulation of the Re fUBLiCAN is steadily climbing S i to seven thousand daily. ur press rooms are open to everybody. I 111 DAI« AHIfT SI, IW8. Hoya Wanted. No doubt hundreds of boys when they read the heading of this article will hurriedly inquire, before reading further, where, when and what to do? We can imagine their chagrin and dis appointment aa they read on and find that they are no dir«cted to address 41 grocer," " clerk," " office," or to call at a ccitain number or upon a certain person. We can picture their disgust when visions of office boys, waiter boys, and errand boys fade away into nothin guess as they read on and are prepared to call our notice a hoax and a deception. Now we would say to those boys who are on the alert for situations, easy aituations especially, you ought not to be in too big a hurry in condemning this article and the motives which prompt ed us to sound the tocsin of " Boys Wanted." We repeat that boys are all the time wanted, scores, hundreds, thousands of them. They are wanted to start to school next Monday with cheerful beaus and smiling faces. Boys are wanted to obey their parents and teachers without a murmur. They are wanted to diligently pursue their studies, to store the mind with useful knowledge, to beoome enlightened, in telligent and useful citizens. They are wanted to be holiest, industrious and truthful. After establishing a charac ter for truth and honesty, and having tired a good education, they will be in demand every where. There are always opeuings for honest, truthful and in elligent boys. They will be wanted in stores, in offices, for mer chants, for doctors, for lawyers, for clerks aud for teachers. But they cannot all find employment in these avocations. Honest boys that ran be depended upon are wanted in the labor departments, as much and more than they are wanted in stores and offices. Honest boys are wanted to be machinists, carpenters, brick layers, plumbers, printers, painters aud artists, stonemasons, butchers aud bakvir.t, moulders, tinsmiths, coach makers, tanners, morocco dressers aud in all other departments of labor. These are no degrading and menial occupations. There is no higher tj pe of man than the honest, intelligent workman whose brawny arms earn bis living at honest toil. Boys, boys we mean, are wanted in all these departments. None need apply 1 those who are hone-t, truthful and in telligent, for none can perform the. i duties iu a satisfacU ry manner W 11*] they po.H80H.-i thu.su important qualifica tions. It is not generally kuown to the pub lic that one of the requirements of the law is that children must be vaccinated to qualify them to attend the public schools. This at first may seem like an arbitrary requirement, but upou second thought uoue but the most unreasonable could object to every means known being made use of to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Schools have sometimes been entirely' broken up by the prevalence of contagious diseases in the district. Amongst these diseases is that generally the most dreaded—the small-pox. Contagious fevers and diph theria though often more fatal in their results than small-pox, are not so much feured and it was a fortunate thought that led Jenner to the discovery of vac cination as a preventative of a loathsome disease that spreads such general alarm wherever it makes its appearance, ter years of investigation and trial if is generally admitted by all schools Of medicine and the public in general that vaccination is a reasonably sure preven. tative of small-pox. 80 well convinced of this fact was our late Legislature that the law referred to was passed. The public schools,as a general thing, will open throughout the State next Monday, and then children, parents and teachers will be brought face to fac' with the law which requires all child' reu io Ik? vaccinated as requisite for ad' mission to the schools. The question Shall this law Ik* carried out V At arises: We unhesitatingly say it should he. It demands no great sacrifice to put it iu operation. Parents can hav* their children vaccinated by their regu lar physician if they prefer to d«» so ami pay him his charges. With the latter the law has nothing to do. For those who do not comply with the requirements of the law or for those who are not able to pay the expenses of vaccination to a regular family physi clan, a physician is designated by the County authorities to perform the duty of vaccination and for such duty the County pays him fifty cents for each operation. This is by no means a very "soft snap" for the physician and it relieves the parents of children <»f some trouble aud a little expense. When the law does so much, the parents ought to be willing to do the remainder. The physician so appointed to vaccinate all children who attend the public schools has the power to perform that duty without the consent of the parents, but it would certainly be a foolish parent who would objeet. By a mutual ar rangement the physician could call at the homes of the children and vaccinate, by another and perhaps more ion' venieut arrangement he could meet them all at the school house at a cer tain stated period and do the work all at trouble parents are willing to permit the law to have its cours'*. • time. There need be hat ever wh The Late (Strike. The late telegraph operators' strike was the principal topic before the Seir ale Labor Investigating Committee yesterday at New York. If the testi mony of Dr. Norvin Green, Presidm 1 ol the W*stern Union Telegraph Com pany, is to be relied upou the public that thought the operators were poorly paid will have to change its verdict After giving a condensed history ot telegraphing from the time it was in' treduced iu 1M7 he referred to the waje.s now paid by the company loop', erators.
