Our press rooms are open to everybody. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 188S. The Ulelitdtr. Our city in startled again with a crime that not only shed the blood of another, but took bis life as well. It in murder, but iu what degree the law*, the court and a jury will have to deter mine. A crime such as was enacted Saturday in broad open daylight aud in the presence of a number of people! must necessarily become public talk aud every man is his own lawyer as to the amount of guilt that attaches to it We would not prejudge the case nor would we say anything which would militate against those on trial for their lives, nor reflect upon the motives him whose lips can never speak again. The life of George Taylor has been taken by Lewis C. List. He was shot down by a pistol iu the hands of a man who unlawfully carried the murderous weapon, and as the case presents itself for the purpose of shooting somebody, no matu r whom, but whoever should at tempt to remove certain property from the house in which the murderer lived. George Taylor happened to be the vic tim, but it might as readily have been someone else. The cause which led to the commission of the horrible deed, is one that arises in every day life and is continually giving trouble—the sublet ting of houses or rather the joint renting of houses. It is very easy for a couple of families to join together and rent a house iu order to economize iu the mat ter of family expenditures. If the par ties are good natured and agreeable they may get along very pleasantly, hut as a general rule inure quarrels and litigation arise from the joint occupa tion and from the renting of houses than from any other cause, li to go into a house togetli gether, each agreeing to pay their share of the rent ami each t<> have the oceu If one it will t Its aud oat are for us a ble all aud he as Mr. pea is very easy to live to paucy of certain rooms aud other privi /«ge h, but it is not so easy afterwards to dissolve that copartnership in case of a quarrel which makes it ini|»osBible to live longer together. There is u right way out of the difficulty, but there are few comparatively who seem to under stand it, and by not understandingitand following the proper course, trouble eu* i. lii the case of List and Dean, both had been living together before, but wishing to change they both agreed to remove and live in another place. The rest of the bloody drama is laid before our readers iu the local reports of the Rk itklii'AN. We will not prejudice the case by saying that the I ists are guilty of premeditated murder. There was had feeling ou both sides, but only young List was armed with a pisto^ ami appeared to be prepared for any emergency. The fight In the street iu which Taylor proved himself to be the better man, the appearance of the elder List with the club, the Hlght of Taylor, the firing of the pistol by young List and the pursuit of Taylor, followed by List retreating aud Taylor pursuing aud then the tatal shot from the door way of a neighboring house, the arrest aud incarceration of lN)th the Lists an.1 the deat h of Taylor wind up the bloody chapter. The pocket pistol did the work and is another argument why the law prohibiting the carrying of con cealed deadly weapons should he rigid ly eu forced. Reporters' Privileges. At last our neighbor, the Every Evening, has its long wished for oppor. tunity to teach the police force a lesson. If only one of its reporters without it warrant, it would teach the force a lesson worth knowing. Now that the glove thrown down has l>eeu taken up, t ic public will be somewhat anxious of the force would arrest t kmiw what our neighbor is going todoaboirt it* Its reporter wat* arrested by the force, aud put for a short time in limbo, with' oat a warrant, just as any other offender would have been treated. We have no prejudice against Mr. Crute, the report* 1 ' arrested, bur at)the same time if reports are correct he was guilty of an action for which we would not defend any re porter. Mr. Unite version of the affair, hut as related lo us by officer Turner, the officer who made the arrest, the case is about as follows: Mr. Taylor, who had been but a short time before shot, had been brought to the City Hall in an insensi' ble and dying condition . Doctors were engaged in an examination, and wer e probing tor the hall. It was a time o all others when they wished to he let' alone. Any pressure around them would have resulted iu an annoyance aud made more or less confusion Under these circumstances Chief of Police Hawkins placed special officer Turner at the gateway that led to the n*om where the doctor* and dying man were, with instructions not to permit anybody to enter without orders. Officer Turner took his place aud say* he noticed Mr. Crute standing on a step as if awaiting an opiHirtunity to enter Mr. Gray and Mr. Rales, attorneys, ap pea red aud were admitted by Chief Hawkins, and Mr. Crute, taking ad vantage of this circ umstance en tered without permission. Nearer home we have accounts of 30.000 people attending the festivities of the Canstatler Society at Scheutzen Park, Philadelphia, on Sunday.
